But it is Miss Bruni's extraordinary personal life which has caused the most friction between her and Mr Sarkozy. A few weeks before their marriage in February 2008 she told a magazine "monogamy bores me".
Then, on their first trip to her £2 million Riviera villa, she also invited a trio of former boyfriends. They all had to sit at the same dinner table as Mr Sarkozy, sharing anecdotes about their relationships with Miss Bruni.
The book, which comes out in France on Thursday, said this happened despite the fact that the men had "fallen apart after being dumped by the Italian with the volcanic temperament".
One affected this way was Arno Klarsfeld, a celebrity lawyer, who said that becoming First Lady had not changed Miss Bruni at all. "She is a real tigress," said Mr Klarsfeld.
Pierre Charon, a civil servant working at the Elysee Palace, told the author of the operation to portray the supermodel-turned-pop singer as a demure president's wife. He told Miss Lahouri: "We had to try and give her a new image - that of a shy young woman."
However Miss Lahouri suggests that it was an impossible job, and that Miss Bruni and Mr Sarkozy will always be viewed as unconventional characters.
