Maybe this should go in the Survival Section but I feel that it is important for you to know......

Today I opened my freezer that has been locked down for the past eight years........I tried two different meals by "Banquet" the first one was a Chinese rice with a egg roll and the second one was a Salisbury steak with corn and mash potato's..........the Chinese rice was like new but the egg roll was dry and like a rock (even after I nuke it).........the Salisbury steak, corn and mash potato was like new and it tasted great.

Also found a whole chicken and a big bag with chicken things........and few more goodies, will open them one of this years.........oh yea, and a bag of bread.......will taste them one of this years.

I was very carefull when opening the freezer because, after all, it has been closed for eight years and I was afraid that a snowman was going to reach out and pull me in..........Ponce<-----the brave one :o

most food lasts well beyond what they tell you. expiration dates are all a gimmick to get you to throw it away and buy more. i had some soup from 1995 about 2 weeks ago, it was fine.

They have found food down in Antarctica left from the early first expeditions that is still good to eat today
now that is deep frozen stuff down there.

And some of that stuff getting to be 100 years old.

Sorry, couldn't resist |--0--|. I think the key was the fact that you kept the freezer sealed shut. What usually ruins food in a kitchen freezer is the cycling from opening and closing the door so much.

can food = way more efficient. eating most pre-made frozen crap has too much additives.

There are tales - I don't doubt to be true - of expeditions surviving on woolly mammoths....

Rebel, already have seven years of can goods and sacks of grains sealed in 44 gallons tanks and in 5 gallons buckes (85 of them).........2 years of Mountain House.

Dogman? as far as that goes the people in the artic circle in Russia have found those old elephants frozen long ago good to eat...........

Exactly

And you know dam well those furry critters did not have any chemicals in them. If protected from freezer
burn and kept cold enough. It will out last anyone.

Note: Not all food but most! If it has a high moisture content it should keep, if not it will slowly freeze dry!

My comment wasn't about you and your storage....it was about - what a waste freezing food for long term storage is ....when freeze dried and canned is typically better, cheaper and lasts much longer.

Just for a grin.

If it came a choice between a frozen steak v/s freeze dried IMHO the taste and texture of the frozen steak
will be superior.

Just saying

what i've been wondering is, how long will Pop Tarts last.

i think it's important to have some dessert type stuff in the food storage and well, i eat Pop Tarts (frosted raspberry ;D ), they come in boxes, they're easy to store.

i wonder what they get like after 5 years.

If you read the label of ingredients , probably forever + 1 day!

My son left home a year ago, there was an unopened pack of real pop tarts (Strawberry) in the cupboard. I opened them they were about 2 yrs old, the crust crumbled to dust, and the filling was like taffy, but still edible,no mold.

pre-made freeze dried tastes 10x better than frozen manufactured meals....and freeze dried just sits there and doesn't require electricity and doesn't have any of the risks that a freezer has.

Great post Ponce.

This is off topic, but I once had a friend of mine say that the fresher the food, the more life force it had. I understand what he was getting at but what do you folks think?

I will say I "feel" better after fresh meat,or veggies from my garden than from the store.

It goes over Kirlian photography. I dunno about how it works exactly, but kinda shows how the life force of food is stronger/weaker with different the same types of foods when it's an organic versus GMO, or uncooked versus cooked. Sorry if this is a little off topic, but I think it's important to understand that even though you may not be getting sick off of super old food, it's still important to keep things as fresh and organic as possible.

General? by "life force" he means the nutrients and vitamins in them.........the food itself is good just about for ever but with no nutritional value......and that's why you should keep a bottle of vitamins in order to have what you need.

Pop Tarts are made of bleached white flour, sugar and some chemicals to make it "tart" and give it color, not much else besides salt and preservatives. Why store it? Beans and rice are cheaper and much more nutritious.
