Much better to use the charge controller. You can not over charge with a controller.(mostly)

Edit: What are you doing? Isolators in my mind are used on r/v and systems that you do not want to drain the battery that the vehicle uses to start up with. And the isolator is used to keep that from happening, and the solar panel is used to charge your DC system's battery's.

What is the setup you are thinking about?

Even with our small system 12 volt we had a charge controller, This is a really good site to ask questions, the mods there are very helpful.
