And who does the money go to ? The largest of the telecoms such as ATT and Verizon, think about that, it is specifically targeted to benefit large corps and only incidentally help others.

Yes, of course, because cell phone service is a right, not a privilege. It says so in the Bill of Rights! Ugh. We are so doomed. We worry about the biggies like Health Care, of course (and we should), but the wealth has been redistributed for decades from the middle to the bottom and from the middle to the top.
Most regular people would be shocked at the amount of government sponsored subsidies that go both toward zero wage earners and giant corporations.
And by "regular people", I mean people other than GSUSers. ;D

I have no clue how you came to that conclusion! It is pretty much taking the Lifeline program - and turning it into socialized cellular service!
Corps and individuals pay into that fund - I was just shocked that it has become a free cell service for those already on .gov assistance....
Simply amazing to me that you do not have to sacrifice any goodies that the first world has to offer - and you don't even have to go to work!!!

History
TracFone was established in 1996 as Topp Telecom Inc., a prepaid cell phone company, in Miami, Florida. In February 1999, Topp received a major infusion of capital from Teléfonos de México or Telmex (NYSE: TMX), Mexico's largest telephone company. TelMex paid $57.5 million for a 55 percent controlling interest in the company.
In 2000, Telmex spun off their mobile unit, creating América Móvil, of which Topp Telecom became a subsidiary. In November 2000, Topp Telecom Inc. changed its name to TracFone Wireless Inc.[3]
[edit] Service
TracFone provides four brands of service: TracFone, NET10, Safelink Wireless, Straight Talk, and Senior Value Cellphone. These brands differ not only in their logos and prepaid minute rates but their underlying networks:
