Pressure Mounts, Sexting DA Publicly Rejects Resignation
By Tom Murray

CHILTON - Late Friday, embattled Calumet County District Attorney Ken Kratz faced news cameras and publicly insisted he will stay in office.

"I intend to continue to serve as the Calumet County District Attorney as I have been elected to do," he told reporters in a press conference carried live on TODAY'S TMJ4.

Kratz admitted he sent 30 text messages to 25-year-old domestic assault victim Stephanie Van Groll; messages like "are u the kind of girl that likes secret contact with an older married elected DA?"

The prosecutor is ignoring intense pressure from peers to resign. The Wisconsin District Attorneys Association added the topic to their meeting agenda in Madison Friday.

"On the surface, it's just intolerable," said Crawford County DA Tim Baxter.

While the WDAA has no legal authority to punish Kratz, the board unanimously approved a letter urging him to step down.

"We should take a position that it's not appropriate under any circumstances," said Marquette County District Attorney Dick Dufour.

An lawyer hired by the victim may file a lawsuit against Kratz.

"What she prefers is that something be done, so that this never occurs to anyone else in her same situation," attorney Michael Fox told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray. "I don't think she realized how wrong this was in a general sense, but it certainly was very wrong in her personal sense."

"I'm embarrassed and ashamed for the choices that I made."

Even Governor Jim Doyle, a former Dane County District Attorney, calls the details "shocking and troubling."

Kratz took no questions at his Friday press conference.

"I'd like to offer my sincere and heartfelt apology," he said.

Kratz kept the investigation out of the public for almost a year. The messages were sent over three days in October 2009. Some question the sincerity of his apology.

"I think it diminishes its effectiveness, because he clearly was hoping to get away with it," said Rep. Fred Kessler (D-Milwaukee).

Kratz said he may consider personal time off to seek therapy. He is an elected official and his term is not up until 2012.
