I Feel Like I've Been KICKED IN THE GUT...

I posted this last night, in 3 different threads. I wake up today to find it's all gone, along with the "new server" thread. Here's one for the memory hole... save a copy while it's still here:


OK... I'm going to FINALLY "weigh in" on this. I should have made this post at least a week or two ago, but I've been VERY busy with work and my time on this forum lately has been mostly spent (at least until a few days ago) putting out the fires of a mythical resurrected bird, and attempting to reach JQP for a discussion about the server issues.

If there is a post I've ever made to this forum that could get me "disbarred" from my moderator position here, then this is the one. Not that I really mind one way or the other, the "mod" job is VASTLY overrated, has cut into my enjoyment of this forum immensely, and quite frankly is somewhat of a royal pain in the ass anyway. Why do I keep doing it then? I'll let you all draw your own conclusions, I think my actions here so far pretty much speak for themselves.

When I signed up for this forum (the "other place" gave me the creeps from the get-go, I've never been a member there...), I was quite pleased to see JQP (who I knew as JohnSixPack on GIM1) running the place, and someone who called themself "WebTech" (Easy Going Moderator) as the "cop". The first few days of this forum was like a breath of fresh air, a new awakening after a wierd nightmarish thing while GIM1 was being hacked to pieces by TPTB and replaced by a gold lame' and naugahyde artificial dreamland (GIM2).

Within a few weeks of joining the new forum, I got a surprise PM from WebTech. He asked me to give him a call. I was somewhat alarmed - thinking I had crossed some line and was about to be banned from the forum. After a few back-and-forth messages asking if there was any other way to contact him (I am out of phone range for the most part, living in a very remote area), I finally agreed to get in touch with him and made the drive to a cellphone reception area for the call. I did NOT expect to be asked to become a moderator, I had no interest in such a thing, and I was quite hesitant to accept the job. WebTech did not make it any easier when he said things like "you'll hate me for this one day", or when he talked about JQP being just another guy trying to raise a family, make his mortgage, etc. It all felt like a LOT of pressure, but he assured me I had all the "qualifications" it takes, that I would be good at it, and that I should contact JQP and accept the position.

Fast forward. I accepted the position, took a week or so of it VERY seriously and tried to do everything "right"... but something seemed to me to be just a bit WRONG - at least in my perception of things. WebTech seemed to have a very heavy hand, almost no tolerance for anything going on in the forum that was against his idea of how it should run, seemed to have a HUGE problem with white-power types (banning several of them before they ever had a chance to post anything, based on some IP database he had compiled), and other things like that. Now, I'm no white supremicist, neo-NAZI, etc. - but the whole thing seemed heavy-handed and overly censored to me. I recall that one evening he recommended that I ban someone permanently (something that I told both him and JQP that I was NOT willing to do) - and I went against his advice. Instead, I did a temp-ban and posted some rant about how this place was BETTER than the other place that perma-banned people left-and-right... I don't think he was amused.

I locked a thread after posting something-or-other about a moderation decision that had been made. WebTech re-opened the thread, posted something inflamatory to the forum (many of who had already seen what was going on, and called him out for the power plays he was making)... and he said that I HAD GIVEN HIM PERMISSION to go in and put in his 0.02 - but I had NOT. At the time I did not openly challenge him on the forum, thinking it was completely UNACCEPTABLE for the leadership to question the leadership. After another few knock-down drag outs with other forum members, some of which resulted in bans, a few members here had the guts to tell him that he "enjoyed power" and started questioning his reason and motives for being here.

He then posted a message about "stepping down" as moderator, and that his only function would be administrative, taking care of the forum software issues and changes.

This was not to be. He continued to interrupt threads, edit/delete posts, and generally do the things that a power-tripping mod would enjoy doing. I finally had enough, I called JQP, and told him that I could NOT continue as moderator if WebTech was continually undermining what I was trying to do (apply the rules evenly, fairly, and objectively)... and that he needed to have a talk with WebTech and tell him to STAY OUT of the main forum operations if he wanted me to continue on as his moderator. JQP told me that he'd have a talk with WebTech.

WebTech quit that evening. He left us a final message in the hidden mods/admin forum - he told us "good luck with the 20-somethings".

I've attempted (at least up to this point) to be diplomatic, detached, and not "stir the brew" where WebTech is concerned. I've watched as he's registered sock-after-sock-after-sock-after-sock (I know what to look for in his registration information and his posting style) - I've "busted" him in probably 90% of these attempts, and sent him PM's telling him that I knew it was him... he's always replied and admitted it. However, up until a month or so ago, I've taken his word that he "only wants to participate in the forum anonymously" and doesn't want to cause problems.

I don't believe this any more.

Recently, in the admin/mod hidden forum, JQP, madfranks, and myself had been discussing "Jenny" and the strange things about her incoming IP data. The conversation began when madfranks noticed her IP was coming in from a "proxy" forwarding server. I already knew this, as I had run a trace of her message IP's about a week earlier, when she started making wierd insinuations about StackerKen "hitting" on her. JQP and myself suggested that we let her stay, and see what she was up to to collect more data. A few days later, I pulled up EVERY IP she had ever come into the forum with, and noticed something strange. Her "sign-up" IP was coming in from a foreign country, but all of her post IP's were SUDDENLY coming from one location - a copy center in the north-eastern U.S. Hmmm... no "proxy" or forwarding server among the mess. JQP and madfranks had a brief discussion about whether or not just anyone could walk into a copy center and use a computer, but I was thinking about the bigger picture. HOW WAS IS POSSIBLE for us to run IP traces back to a proxy server one day, and suddenly have everything "kosher" and coming in from a single innocent location the next? There is, of course, only one answer to this... someone with ADMINISTRATOR privileges had gone in and changed the IP data to throw the 3 of us off.

Yesterday, while updating the ban list (another "back room" hidden forum thread), I noticed that our carefully compiled list of previously banned members, offenses, and other relevant information had been ALTERED. Seriously. Almost all of the ban dates (in YYYY-MM-DD format) had been deleted, but the last "edit" timestamp had my name on it. There is ZERO reason that I would do this, it is a valuable set of information that helps me, madfranks, and JQP figure out what a member has done in the past when banned... there is NO REASON for any of us to alter this data.

WebTech/WT/AlterEgo/Freedom42/Odysseus/The Riot Act/Etc. - and all your socks (which I'm CONVINCED at this point included Jenny): as far as I'm concerned, the gloves are off! They were off several days ago when I changed my avatar to match MAGNES's avatar in color and content. The gloves were off many days before that when you changed YOUR avatar to the cat with headphones (RUBBING IT IN OUR FACES that YOU are WT - who had the SAME avatar!!!). The gloves were ESPECIALLY off when you again changed your avatar to the goofy looking "shocked" huge eyeballs-in-the-headlights avatar taunting us that you're "scared" - when you are NOT.

I do NOT believe you have this forum's best interests at heart, despite your continued assistance to JQP with technical problems - and I'll go even further than that. I believe that YOU were responsible for the SirGonzo42 "Gun in your FACE" logon screen - MAGNES sent me his password so I could log on (as him) and see it myself.. and you know what? It was THERE... the gun IN MY FACE - such a subtle and sublime message, easily attributable to some kind of forum "glitch" - but it wasn't. I never saw it when I logged on, my girlfriend Henny Penny never saw it when SHE logged on... there was an entire thread here about it - and not very many members actually saw it. However, I SAW IT - but only after logging in as MAGNES - the MAIN PERSON HERE who is trying to expose you and reveal what you are doing to the rest of this forum. Coincidence? I doubt it.

K-os... I know you had coffee with the guy, I know you think he's a real good guy and all that... I myself talked with him on the phone and he seems like the nicest middle-aged "been around the block" web dude around, but this is a LIE!!! I am convinced 100% that he is here to DAMAGE this forum, to distract it, to tear it down subtly, and to make it non-relevant in any way that he can. I would not be IN THE LEAST BIT surprised if I were to find out that the recent slowdowns and database errors were at least in part due to his actions.

MAGNES - I pretty much HATED you on GIM1, had a few minor battles with you when THIS forum started, then I figured you out... you are one of only a few people here who I trust absolutely at this point... you have the forum's best interests at heart and have PROVEN it with your diligent research and ultra-sharp mind! You could have gone and made a bunch of thousand more dollars OWNING this manipulated market with your razor-sharp financial mind... but instead you have applied (at least a part) of your intellect toward the goal of OUTING this guy. EVERYONE on this forum owes you a huge debt of gratitude for this, and you've done incredible work DESPITE the lack of "back-room" IP evidence.

I'm not sure there's much more to say... I've probably already ranted longer than necessary.

I HATE DECEPTION AND SABOTAGE - I want WebTech OUT of here. If that means JQP needs to find another moderator, so be it... but if he does, I'm betting most of you are smart enough to know what that means - and that you'll spend your remaining internet time accordingly.

I think this place is better than anything else out there, at least that I've seen, the group of people who have come together to make this place is unique and special.
I'm of the opinion that this forum can survive everything that has happened recently, including the forum server problems, but ONLY if we all pull together and WANT this place to work.
A big part of this will be how JohnQPublic reacts to all this, if there's another "database error" like last night, I won't be coming back. I titled this thread "I Feel Like I've been KICKED IN THE GUT" - and that's really how I feel right now - but it's just an emotion, and it will pass. I'm of the opinion that one of three things happened last night:

(1) Face value - database backup that failed. I consider this HIGHLY UNLIKELY in light of the timing.
(2) WebTech saw what was going on and "fixed" things, JQP just saw a forum database failure
(3) JohnQPublic intentionally removed yesterday's posts after I made mine, with or without WebTech's help

I'm REALLY hoping it's not #3 - we will see how JQP responds to all this.

A simple backup of a SQL database WILL NOT remove information if it fails. If it fails, it fails and life goes on. Anyone claiming a database backup caused the removal of 7 hours of posts is lying, selling something, or both.

It most certainly was not a "glitch", websites dont work like that. It was a malicious attack against members of the forum, one that perhaps implied a threat to us that got the "gun in your face" upon login.

I have been here from the beginning of this forum... a refugee of sorts from gim/gim2. I have seen the joy our members had when this forum started up and we all started drifting in. I watched as the members grew and as we grew we started to get some people who were unable for some reason to make their argument or statement without being crude and immature.

Then the infiltration and or sabotage of the site. Poor administration by people who obviously had their own agenda. A lot of primadona wanabe tough guys that would rather crap on a thread than offer anything of substance.

Now all the talk of jumping ship again. Now I am not saying that things could not have been handled better... and the whole server issue is a mystery to me.. as I have seen multiple people offer to donate to getting the forum on a dedicated server. I think that is the MAJOR issue right now. Well and the deletion of threads and such by unknowns... possibly former admins.

I was just thinking that if everytime there is a problem we would just throw our hand up and quit... then there will NEVER be a place like we have here. I also realise that people have better things to do than try and post or even just view the site if it is running with less performance than expected. Could the site have been slowed down by some sort of admin level stuff? Maybe. It was working much better before and there has not been any huge increase in traffic as far as I can tell.

So I guess I am saying that this site is worth more to me ... and I will stay for a while with hopes things will iron themselves out. And a big thanks to Gaillo for all his fair handed moderating and effort to make this a fun and educational place to visit.

There are so many people here that I love to read... If they all run... then I will have lost something special to me.

It has been tremendously satisfying experience.

Here's a little anomaly I noticed this morning: Last night there was a poll in GD titled "Gold will it hit $2000 soon?". I posted a little quip about "oh gawd, another "GOLD!" thread..."

This morning I refresh that thread which was still open in my browser, and it goes to the GD forum directory. Not an error page coz the thread was removed. And browser address still reads:

...but in spite of that, it loads the GD directory, as though nothing is amiss... check it out?

I don't know this Webtech person so I really can't say much about it. However, from what I can see here, most of the members and even the mods have some trust issues where he is concerned. For that reason alone, I think it would be wise to get him away from the administrative controls, whether he is guilty of what is being said or not.

Having said that, I do believe that the problems with the board is a server issue, and not intentional sabotage. I say that because I had to deal with the same issues when I started my forum. Godaddy's servers and packages just aren't capable of handling a forum. I learned this the hard way. When JohnQ tried to do a backup right in the midst of all the server problems, it could very well have caused loss of data, anywhere on the forum. It is possible that that is what happened.

I gave JohnQ some info last night that I think will help, and from the PM I received back from him, he is checking into it. So, hopefully it won't be long before you, not only have a better server, but also vBulletin. And, he won't need to depend on Webtech.

Let's try to be patient and non critical, give JohnQ some time to get this figured out, and hope for a better, smoother forum in the near future. :)

I don't know about anything else happening in here but that's a character encoding issue. If you were to change your browser to use utf-8 it would show up properly. It's the quotation marks that are an issue. If you use the non-angled quotes " ' then it won't happen.

undgrd is right - haphazard deletes outside the specified time frame is not something that happens when a DB backup fails.

You don't go randomly through the posts. You script it and set parameters. Set it up to trigger under a certain conditions. Do a keyword search through the database and strike. You can strike based on the posters ID or username.

There are a million ways to script something exactly like what happened and make it appear random.

Trust me, this wasn't an accident and it wasn't random.

The only other explanation is multiple sectors of redundant hard drives at GoDaddy failed. Since they're probably virtualized, I HIGHLY doubt that is the case.

To me, it's pretty obvious our little corner of the internet has been deliberately hacked, imo. The odds of this being random just seem to small.

I think we need to ask ourselves how we collectively handle challenge, do we hide in a corner, or face this together head on? The little bastard that did this needs to know he's in our sights now, and whatever we can do to drop the hammer down he's got it coming now.

Also, I am not an IT guy (used to be years ago), but isn't there logging software that shows changes to the database? If not, could it be installed?

The other suggestion, is that this may be worth pursuing legally. Maybe a lawyer posts here that can offer advise on how to capture and root this turd out legally. Hacking, seems like a big deal in this day and age, not a funny prank.

Database's are just large text files. I know DMac mentioned either here or in another post that they can't loose data. While I do respect his knowledge of mySQL, I have personally had data corrupted during a backup. So much so, that db queries with phpMYAdmin would not fix it. I had to go in by hand and find the errors, a tedious job at best.

backups or whatever you do to a db don't randomly, neatly, delete things. in the 20 years have been doing it, i've never seen it happen. never. and i do about 45 of these a week.


Of course not, you are correct. But if you back up a db then allow more information to be added while moving the db (backup copy) then redirecting the original to the backup, all post that were added in the in time it took are lost.

Admin needs to check every user id permissions and lock down all but an admin account. Reset every other administrative account's password and remove admin privileges from all user accounts except the 3 known admins (G, MF, JQP).

This includes any accounts JQP has with the hosting provider.

You don't lose data during a backup. You lose data when a drive kicks out (aka dies). Seeing as nobody runs a server without drive redundancy (RAID), data usually does not get lost when a drive dies either unless two or more go at the same time. If that happened an entire day would disappear, or until the last backup could be restored. It's usually every 24 hours, so an entire day of posts would be lost.

The forum is comprised of database files so if one gets damaged typically it needs to be consolidated (made clean) before it will mount again and be usable. Possible if the db files got corrupted, but then there would be down time until they were made whole again. You can see sporadic truncation of table entries in this case. But there was no down time.

If two drives died at the same time, and were replaced, and the database file got munched the forum would be down altogether until disaster recovery took place. If that happened and the database was fixed with utilities to be made whole again then threads and posts would have been rolled back to the last time the backup ran.

Drive failure with data recovery...possible scenario with down time. Data loss from backup process alone on valid raided drives is so extremely rare it essentially never happens.

This is all I know. I went to bed last night at approx. 3:00AM, the forum was working fine and my 3 copies of my post in the 3 threads were intact and being replied to. I got up this morning at approx. 7:30AM, and logged into the forum about 15 minutes later. The three threads were gone, so I re-posted from my hard disk backup, and the rest is history. So, that gives a max. of around 4.5 hours - is that enough time for the type of restore you are talking about - even if the techs WERE there at 3AM (which I find dubious...)?

Maybe it is as JQP says... a failed database backup followed by restoration of an earlier copy of the forum database from yesterday. I'm having a hard time just accepting that, though... considering the timing and content of my posts last night.

StillWondering is Fred/PDT/Phoenix's Wife. She is good in my books, but it's not like I personally know her. If anything, it was probably Phoenix using her account for some browsing, but I fail to see why he would be looking at profiles, unless he has been compromised/corrupted.

If I find evidence of a sabatouer I will take action. Gaillo and I still have not been able to get together. I will listen to what he has to say, and he will listen to me. We will figure this out. What he has said up to now is not inconsistent with a database error last night.

The restoration may have been automated. GoDaddy apparently has a bad reputation for SQL errors (which is what I have been saying I think the problem is):
