View Full Version : STATUS OF GSUS

One of the posts lost last night was my post regarding moving to another server. I asked for techncially inclined volunteers to help find the right place to go. Playwithfire proposed a VB specialist host, and I have asked for a quotation from them to host GSUS. I would probably have them convert our forum to VB if we chose to go VB, then have them host it. I lost the PM, so I cannot post the URL right now.

I am on board with finding a better solution than we now have.

For the moment I want to be sure we get a good back-up of the database. I will post more info. a little later today.

Here is the VB hosting specialist:

John, the software has a built in database backup feature. First you put the forum in Maintenance mode. That keeps anyone from posting like Dmac said. Do the down;load to YOUR computer. Never depend on the host to do backups.

I have sent you information on this a while ago.

JPQ,

I don't have the bandwidth to volunteer for a migration project to bring GSUS online with a new host. I will do my best to help with any advice or questions as time permits.

In a nutshell, everything you want to be done, can be done. Existing URL can be configured for redirects to new site, you can migrate the SMF to VB. Virtual is probably your only option and would work fine.

The database has gotten too big for that. I have not been able to back-up via the built in SMF facility for a couple of months.

Well then switch software. I have three sites and all of them except for one has a much larger db being they have been online for over 5 years, and I use that java program that I sent you the link to. I back them up every 4 hours.

Take DMac's advice..

Then the paranoids here won't have me to kick around any longer.

I don't really see a lot of users viewing this board, is a dedicated server really needed? Maybe hiring an expert temporarily to examine the problems and find a cheaper solution to the problems this board is having. Just a thought.

Playswithfire

I don't think it needs a dedicated server. My forum has almost 3000 members and I'm not on a dedicated server and we aren't having any problems.

JohnQPublic

I agree, we may not need a dedicated server. The issue now is that the SQL database resides on a different server than the forum, and I suspect the interface may not be good. I titled this dedicated server beacuse that is what my [lost] thread from last night talked about. With a dedicated server you have total control, but also a lot more maintanence issues.

Well GoDaddy has responded. Not very helpful:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for contacting Hosting Support. Regarding hosting account -------, I understand that you are not able to backup your database through our Hosting Control Center. We have reviewed the database size and see that it is 1GB, we would recommend reducing the size of your database as its current size can cause issues with backing it up. Once you reduce the size of the database please attempt to back it up. As a courtesy we have optimized the tables of your database through phpMyAdmin which helps in clearing out any overhead your database tables may have had.

Please contact us if you have any further issues.

Regards,

XXXXXXXX
Hosting Support

I will try and back it up externally. Since it is their server, doing so may not be as direct as I would like. I have asked them for additional help doing so. My response:

Are you saying delete my data?

What options do I have to backing the data up? Can I back it up to my own hard drive?

Telling me to delete my data is an unreasonable response.

Thanks for optimizing the tables.

Thanks ra.

I am working actively with www.urljet.com to get the existing site over to their hosting. We will do a clean install of SMF, and get it going asap. Once we are safely over there, we can investigate migrating to VB.

Keep in mind all that we may lose stuff- smite counts, thanks, etc. The key thing is to get the database over. Once we move to VB, we would also lose stuf, I'm sure, but again, the key thing is to not lose the database (posts, messages, pictures, members, etc.).

Because of the curveball that GoDaddy cannot abck up the database, we may need some special consideration to get it. If the software ra linked to works, great, but GoDaddy may not allow it to work.

I will keep you posted on what the impact will be as we go.

I have to agree. While I'm not an IT expert, it seems like the forum software seems unresponsive to commands from my browser. When making a response to a post, I have to hit the "Post" button several times and/or hit the refresh button first on my browser to actually get it to post. It also seems to be worse with my mac than my home Linux box.

Urljet is proposing a shared account on their system. We can migrate up if needed. Their system is geared towasrds forums, especially VBulletin.

That java program installs on YOUR computer. It will (maybe) download the db to your computer.

Cavart: It will put the forum into "Maintenance Mode" while it is working. Now if for some reason smf still balks you can try replacing the *.php files that do the db backup.

Without getting to technical here you can download the 1.1.11 package to your computer. Unzip the zip file and find the file/Sources/ DumpDatabase.php.

FTP up and rename the file DumpDatabase.php to something like DumpDatabase.bak Then upload the one you extracted from the downloaded 1.1.11 package.

It's worth a try. But to all, the forum will be unusable while it is in maintenance mode.

If your home connection is fast enough it should not take more than a half hour to dl 1 gig.

Update:

I am right now downloading the latest back-up (via ftp) to my computer. It is from this morning, but at least we have it. GoDaddy had to manually transfer it to my account.

The problem we are having is that we are growing to big for the current shared hosting account. The database is getting too big on the shared MySQL server, and this is causing a lot of problems.

My goal is to get this site up and running on urljet soon- maybe this weekend if possible.
GoDaddy says I can call and request a back-up when I am ready to move.

NOTE: There likely will be some down time.
1. I need to get the new forum up and running and we cannot add to the existnig forum durnig this process.
2. I need to change nameservers (telling the registrar where gold-silver.us is hosted. *.us domains take longer than .com/.net, etc.) so it could be a few hours or it could be 12-24 hours (worst case). I will work with urljet to make it the minimum possible.

THIS IS NOT GIM-GIM2

We will move the entire database, and there will be no new registrations, etc.

I will send out emails and PMs in advance and keep you updated here.

Please keep cool through this process. I warned all along that if we move, there would be disruptions. I will do my best to minimize them. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to go through this process.

thanks for attempting to solve the problems. if there's an issue with finances, i'd suggest complete transparency (post whatever bills to the site for all to see), and allow users to donate if they want (again in public...i recall some suggestion that part of GIM's demise was that someone donated a large amount and effectively took over the site that way, so perhaps it might be a good idea also to limit the amount that any one user is allowed to donate).

JQP,

Thanks for the updates and the efforts.

Do you plan on sending any email notices to members if any issues arise with the transfer, especially if we get into the 12/24 hr window?

I believe in the internet. The internet has made my fortune. And I supported GSUS in the American fashion. I gave GSUS good postings but I taught her never to dishonor the goldbugs. She found a "friend," not a goldbug. She shared a thread with him. She stayed out late. I didn't protest. Two months ago he took her for a drive, with another shill. They made her drink koolaid and then they tried to take advantage of her. She resisted. She kept her honor. So they spammed her. Like an animal. When I went to log on her database was broken. Her membership was shattered, held together by PMs. She couldn't even hotlink because of the server. But I wept. Why did I weep? She was the light of my internet surfing. A beautiful forum. Now she will never be beautiful again.

I'd like to add a little info here.

Once the forum is moved, everyones IP will need to update their servers to catch up with the move. At least that is what happened when I moved my forum. So, some of you will be able to get to the forum before others, depending on how often your IP updates their servers.

So please don't panic if you're unable to get in right away. If it takes forever, you can do what I did and email your IP and ask them to update. I had members able to get into my forum a couple days ahead of me.

Status Update:

We should be transitioning tomorrow night. I would plan to not be on after 8 PM. I will put the forum into maintenance mode, then get the final copy of the database. Urljet will upload it to the already functioning forum on their site (I saw it- it looks good).

I will change the nameservers, and in a while this forum will be inaccessible. Once the nameservers propogate, it will be active on the other end. I will send out a newsletter (email and PM) announcing it before it starts.
