I do not, and probably never will, own a cell phone. I'd like to be able to send someone a text message every now and then. Is there a programme out there that I can use that can do that? I looked into the Google Android emulator; but it didn't seem like it can be done. Any suggestions?

I send txt messages using gmail. Works great but I'm sure it's being stored along with my emails and the rest of my online footprint in some government mountain somewhere.
Also, you can send email to the recipient's phone number and it will be received as text. You just need the domain their respective provider uses, eg @sprintpcs.com.

I haven't done this in a while but you might be able to go the providers website i.e. ATT, T-Mobil and send it from there, but you wouldn't get a response.

This is true.
And so is the other post that if you know their number you just add @ATT.com, or @T-Mobile.com to the end of a phone number.
I send myself text messages from my email to my phone all of the time (like directions).

Just type "Send text message online" in google and you will get a page full. Each Cel provider has their own site, ie: Bell, Verizon, Fido, etc.

I looked at that route too. I have no idea why, but prefer having a dedicated programme sitting on my machine. Looks like I'll just use a browser-based solution.

I use Instant Messenger to send text messages, but I don't have any AOL products installed on my machine. Regardless, this same method works with AIM (instant messenger). What I use is a program called "Pidgin" which accesses AOL, Yahoo, MSN, gmail, and others all at the same time. It's an open-source chat program which covers all the bases. http://www.pidgin.im/
To send a txt msg, I need only send an IM to the phone number in the following format. The + sign lets it know a phone number is coming next, and to treat it as an SMS:
To: +1 800 867 5309
Body: Hey what's up why'd you try to ruin the board?
And that's all! The program is free and sending text messages is free.
