White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, is expected to announce his resignation from his position in the Obama administration this coming Friday, several media outlets report. Sources say he is leaving his post in order to launch a bid for mayor of Chicago.
Emanuel’s alleged departure comes in the wake of an announcement by current Chicago Mayor, Richard M. Daley, that he would not seek reelection for a seventh term.
Prospective candidates must file for the February mayoral election in November, which may have prompted Emanuel’s sudden departure from the White House.
The decision does not surprise political analysts, as Emanuel originally reigns from Chicago and has expressed his desire to someday run for mayor of his hometown.
President Barack Obama has expressed his support of Emanuel’s mayoral bid saying, "My expectation is, he'd make a decision after these midterm elections," Obama said. "He knows that we've got a lot of work to do. But I think he’d be a terrific mayor.”
