CHAMPAIGN – But for his great sense of humor, Mike Sola might be curled up in the fetal position crying right now.

The 50-year-old former weatherman for WILL-TV and, before that, WCIA-TV, is among the latest in a growing list of white men in town being slugged for sport by young black men in what's been dubbed "polar bear hunting."

The attacks seem to have been concentrated on campus during August but lately have been spreading across Champaign and have even included young white boys in city parks.

"My facial swelling has gone down to where it looks like I had a cheap botox injection. My crow's feet are totally gone on the right side," he quipped Tuesday, some four days after being attacked while walking home from a Central High School football game. "I've been beat up worse than this by my brothers."

Sola said he decided to walk the couple of miles to his south central Champaign home Friday night after the game let out at Tommy Stewart Field behind Centennial High School.

He was near Jefferson Middle School on Crescent Drive about 9:30 p.m., one of several people leaving the game, when "out of the blue I feel something hit me in the back of the head."

"It's hard. It wasn't a fist," he said, adding that whatever struck him wrapped around to the front of his neck, causing it to bruise. Although stunned, his little bit of karate training sent him into a defensive mode.

"I go into a crouch, get a little bit of a defensive stance, reach out and grab somebody, and throw a punch. I hit somebody," he said, adding he was peppering his assailants with a few well-chosen phrases of outrage.

He doesn't know how many there were – he believes at least two – and couldn't recognize them in the dark, but knows they were probably teens leaving the game just as he was.

"They didn't look out of place in a group of high schoolers," Sola said.

Within seconds, police and other passers-by, including Central High School Principal Joe Williams, were helping Sola.

Several officers were already there lighting the darker portions of the street with their squad-car spotlights as they watched the fans leaving.

Sola said an ambulance attendant cleaned him up a bit, but he gratefully accepted a ride from Williams to the hospital so as not to have to incur the expense of a co-pay for an ambulance ride for something caused by someone else.

Sola said he told Williams he could announce at school Monday that "the old man attacked on Friday night would like a cage match."

He had to have four or five stitches to repair the cut to his right earlobe. The right side of his face was also fairly swollen and his face was scratched.

"I do have quite a nice shiner. I grew up with seven older brothers on the South Side of Chicago, so I know how to fight," he said. "Unfortunately, when you get hit in the back of the head, all you can do is go into defensive mode and lash out.

"This was the epitome of cowardice to come up from behind and out of the dark. If that's their gang initiation, that's a ... (cowardly) bunch of gang members," Sola said.

His bravado and humor aside, Sola said he's saddened by the random attacks.

"I'm not a racist. My black friends are just as frustrated and (ticked) off as my white friends," he said. "The frustration transcends race, but the activities all seem to be race-related."

And he's nervous that an attacker or an innocent bystander is going to be killed by a victim who might be armed.

"There's more consequence than just the personal ones to me. I'm a victim, but I'm not victimized. It's a sad statement when you can't walk down the sidewalk at 9:30 at night. Did we lose ownership of the streets?" he asked.

"If these kids had a family background where a dad was bringing home a paycheck and instilling parental control, this wouldn't be a problem," said Sola, who said he doesn't want unemployment and underemployment to be an excuse for such behavior. "If you're a good person, you're a good person. If you're a piece of trash, you're a piece of trash."

Out of work himself for three months after being laid off from WILL earlier this year, Sola said he put the time to good use doing work for some older folks on their homes and learning how to take an outboard motor apart and put it back together.

He was recently hired as an account executive for SJ Broadcasting, a group of radio stations based in Champaign.

Ironically, he said one of his first sales as a radio ad executive was to the owner of a martial arts academy.


This has been occurring regularly here for the past month or so. Especially since fall semester began.

A couple of these have had robbery attached to them, but the vast majority is a jump on a single white male event.
Most have been up on campus at 2 am, but a few have been at parks in the daylight. Where Sola was, is NOT a bad neiborhood for this town. I think one of the other stories stated that people just kept walking by while a guy was being kicked and hit by 4 others.

I have not seen this other reports in the local media of other surrounding cities/towns having this issue.

So what does one do? I live in ILL. We cannot by statute conceal carry, open carry, or probably carry a long sword.

Would you conceal carry anyway? How about a billy club strapped to your side? Where I specifically live, the "hunting parties" have not been around. It is probably a matter of time that the degenerates in my area will start to do the new cool thing.

Read the comments of the story, it will give you some idea of the libtard area I live. Some good people posted some nice things about the need to conceal carry. That is a start.

If you cant carry a firearm in your state/county, then carry a taser, stun gun or pepper spray. Dont feel like its a wussy thing because its less than lethal or whatever. Screw that noise, do what you gotta do. If all I had was pepper spray and a group of little piss ant thugs wants to "polar bear" hunt my white ass, I'd make em eat that shit by the time I got done with them.

And yell as loud as you can while doing it, this gos for yall who carry firearms too. as you draw out your defensive intrument, holler "STOP! BACK OFF" or "STOP! GET AWAY!" in a loud, authoritative voice as you squeezing the trigger of whatever it is your carrying.

This helps greatly to draw attention from bystanders (later witnesses) as well as in the legal arena if it comes to that.

"Hey, I told them to stop, get away from me. I did everything I could to diffuse the situation before using lethal force!"

Rember, with stun guns (Tasers that dont shoot darts) and projectile tasers, you can physicaly contact a person while they are being shocked without harming yourself (as long as you aint touching one of the probes). So if it comes to be that your grappling witht he assailaint, or you have some other type of contact where you are locked intogether, you can still tase them with no ill effect to yourself. Pepper spray is going to effect EVERYONE in the immediate area, which is where its good for multiple attackers. Back up as you spray though, cause its easy to get yourself with it (ive done it!) and its not fun!

It was on the radar before. I may expedite my purchase now.

I really posted this article because of the term "Polar Bear Hunting". I had never heard of the term before reading this. Is this normal everywhere else? You have to remember we are about 2yrs behind the curve in the Midwest.

I have been wondering if this type of action is now going to become more prevalent, either here specifically or anywhere else. This is not a specific group of individuals. The "hunting areas" have been at different locations and different times. Not really any rhyme nor reason to any of them. No robbery has been involved in 95% of the "hunts". It's just beat whitey time.

I had not seen the thread about swaming in Halifax. I will say our degenerates have yet to attack women, it has all been on white males.

The motivation behind some of these attacks here (I suspect) are stemming from a local youth that decided to struggle with a cop who had his gun drawn. The kid lost.

Unless there is some underground "Polar Bear" hating club I have missed that is spreading the word around to get localized "hunts" orchestrated.

Zap, I'm in a small college town. If you took out the college students we might be left with 60,000. For here, this type of attack is odd.

The story from my local paper seems to indicated either a fad or trend is growing in the area. I haven't talked to any local cops, but they would probably know if it is a select group of cowards.

The city I live in is consistently in the top 5 as far as the most dangerous cities in America.


My city is too RatHoler, out here we call these punks rat packs. Usually a robbery is involved, a group of 5-10 kids gang up on someone, beat them up, then take their money. I don't necessarily think it's a get whitey issue, but I'd say whites are targeted more than other races. Asians are targeted a lot to.

The best advise is practicing situational awareness. If you do that right, nobody is going to sneak up on you and hit you in the back of the head. Let people around you know that you know they are there, but in a non confrontational manner. Watch corners on buildings, give yourself plenty of room..."pie the corner" so to speak. Things like that, just know whats going on around you is the best way to keep from getting attacked.

If you do get attacked, do as much damage as you can. Every little bit helps teach these punks not to keep doing it.

Back in the time of separate but equal in my area when the blacks had their side of town and whites the other
seperate water fountains theirs were labled colored or blacks. After about 9 p.m if you were black you did not go north past the rr tracks.

They had a game, where they would all ride around in the back of a pickup truck, each with a brick. The game was called, verbatum "brick a niqqer". They would drive around and each throw a brick at a black person.

The game had a catch. If one of them did not hit the black person. They would stop the truck, and that kid had to go fetch the brick alone.

I think a lot of this still goes on today. Whites beating up blacks, and blacks beating up whites. I doubt anything is going to change anytime soon.

They also did the same here bricks , rocks, what ever. The law never did anything about anything this was in Texas and very close to Louisiana and old ways die hard. Most of the bad stuff stopped in the late 60's and early 70's

Less than 5 years ago there is a small town east of dallas about 30 miles or so that had a sign posted at the city limits on all roads going into town , that said something like this "If you are black do not let the sun set on your back here" or something close to that.

I think it even made national news back then, have not heard anything since.

Go figure! Almost like what goes around comes around.

Edit: I think the town was called Grand Saline. It was (is?) one of several so called "Sundown towns" in Texas.
(Google it). And fairly sure it is still happening. So racism is still alive and well in Texas.

To follow up on the o.p.

3 juveniles have been arrested so far, I think a few more have yet to be "found".

The first one they arrested, used the excuse that his girlfriend dumped him and that the victim bumped into him.
He had been arrested/detained about 7 times. All the discipline for those were handled within the school system.

The best thing is that the local paper shut down all comments for the stories relating to this incident.
Too many non-sheep were speaking their minds.
