View Full Version : And so it begins: House Votes 348-79 To Declare (Trade) War On China

We're not sure what they hope to accomplish with this, but the House has voted 348-79 to penalize China for its practice of fixing the yuan to the dollar, at a level which foreign exchange experts in Congress believe to be too low.
WSJ:
The measure would allow, but not require, the U.S. to levy tariffs on countries that undervalue their currencies. The bipartisan support highlights lawmakers' long-simmering frustration with Chinese trade practices as well as their sensitivity to the faltering economic recovery with elections looming. It's the strongest trade measure aimed at China to make it through a body of Congress after more than a decade of legislative threats by U.S. lawmakers.
We doubt this will go anywhere in the Senate, which is gridlocked beyond all rhyme and reason, but the message is sent.

Rather: 'And so it CONTINUES' is more like it. We are well on the road to serfdom in this country. Next stop: Tyranny of the Masses (aka Tea Party)

I've heard that it won't be debated in the Senate until after the mid-term elections.
Let's hope that it fails.

And what is the U.S. going to do? Nothing. The Chinese could off load their trillions of fiat bucks and tank the U.S. economy. Yes it would screw them too, but the U.S. doesn't have a hand to play. Our EPA b.s. killed about 50% of business in the U.S. and importing mestizos for cheap labor won't fix the divide.
The ONLY solution to this mess will be a nuclear one. Mark my words.

Stocking up on strategic supply's and other materials that you have to rely on other country's to supply
could be the smart thing to do.Especially in a run up to a possible war. And if we ever get into a dust up
with china there is a very good chance before it was over the nuclear card will be played.

China is now doing more business with the rest of the world than with the US...pretty soon America will be making "pretty" things for China.

Free trade has destroyed this country. I'm as conservative as it gets but this is one issue that Democrats at least pay lip service to that I agree with them on. In reality, it's a conservative - Pat Buchannan, Ross Perot - position.
You want to destroy the middle class and the American dream? Have our workers 'compete' with 3rd world scum that make 10 cents an hour under the guise of "free" trade.
Oh and meanwhile the big corporations are going to screw over the working man and taxpayers by dumping off their healthcare costs onto the government and their pension costs for employees onto the government.

Wasn't Ross Perot railing against NAFTA while other such as Ron Reagan were pushing hard for it? I forget Pats stance.

Yeah, that's my point. Conservatives are usually free trade, but some conservatives like Pat and Ross oppose free trade. Those old-time anti-free trade conservatives no longer exist. Republicans are all free traders nowadays. it's a shame.

To me making an "economical" war on China is like the Zionist "Jews" making an economical war on Germany back in 1928.........but of course we can always use nukes.

He's a Hamiltonian. Worships the ground he walked on. I find that very odd for someone who is quite conservative on a lot of other issues.

You must know that free trade was engineered to suit such a purpose by now.

Have you noticed these signs of deindustrialization?
free trade working to make everyone poorer
#1 The United States has lost approximately 42,400 factories since 2001. About 75 percent of those factories employed over 500 people when they were still in operation.
#2 Dell Inc., one of America’s largest manufacturers of computers, has announced plans to dramatically expand its operations in China with an investment of over $100 billion over the next decade.
#3 Dell has announced that it will be closing its last large U.S. manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in November. Approximately 900 jobs will be lost.
#4 In 2008, 1.2 billion cellphones were sold worldwide. So how many of them were manufactured inside the United States? Zero.
#5 According to a new study conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, if the U.S. trade deficit with China continues to increase at its current rate, the U.S. economy will lose over half a million jobs this year alone.
#6 As of the end of July, the U.S. trade deficit with China had risen 18 percent compared to the same time period a year ago.
#7 The United States has lost a total of about 5.5 million manufacturing jobs since October 2000.
#8 According to Tax Notes, between 1999 and 2008 employment at the foreign affiliates of U.S. parent companies increased an astounding 30 percent to 10.1 million. During that exact same time period, U.S. employment at American multinational corporations declined 8 percent to 21.1 million.
#9 In 1959, manufacturing represented 28 percent of U.S. economic output. In 2008, it represented 11.5 percent.

#15 Manufacturing employment in the U.S. computer industry is actually lower in 2010 than it was in 1975.
#16 Printed circuit boards are used in tens of thousands of different products. Asia now produces 84 percent of them worldwide.
