DELAWARE POLITICS: Coons distances self from Obama
The News Journal • October 5, 2010
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Chris Coons outlined his disagreements with the Obama administration's handling of the bank bailout and support for offshore oil exploration in an online chat Monday on The News Journal's website.
At times during the campaign, Coons has sought to distance himself from Washington Democrats and President Barack Obama.
In the first question, Coons noted he opposed Obama's plan to end a long-standing moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida.
"I think drilling off the coast is bad for our state and our country," Coons wrote.
He also took issue with how the federal government has handled the bailout of Wall Street banks, which was initiated under the Bush administration and a Democratic-controlled Congress.
"The Obama administration could have done a better job when they came in of making it more accountable and transparent," Coons wrote.
Two readers asked Coons whether he would "be willing to hold your head up high, and say, 'I'm a liberal and proud of it.' "
"There are areas where I'm solidly progressive, but I am also a fiscal conservative and don't think you can consistently label my positions with either liberal or conservative," Coons responded.
Coons was the first candidate in the Nov. 2 general election to answer questions submitted by readers on delawareonline.com. Several hundred questions were submitted in a live, town-hall-style chat.
During the forum, Coons repeated several policy statements he has made on the campaign trail since getting into the race to fill Vice President Joe Biden's old seat. He addressed reader questions about taxes, gun control, his political ideology and his record as New Castle County executive.
One reader asked Coons about the "F" grade the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund recently gave him for his positions on gun rights and the Second Amendment. The NRA has endorsed Republican Christine O'Donnell in the race.
"We need to work harder to keep guns out of the hands of felons and those with demonstrated mental problems and to promote gun safety, but I strongly believe in the right of Americans to own and use firearms for self-defense and sport," Coons wrote.
