Some Android apps caught covertly sending GPS data to advertisers
By Ryan Paul | Last updated 6 days ago
http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2010/09/some-android-apps-found-to-covertly-send-gps-data-to-advertisers.ars

" The results of a study conducted by researchers from Duke University, Penn State University, and Intel Labs have revealed that a significant number of popular Android applications transmit private user data to advertising networks without explicitly asking or informing the user. The researchers developed a piece of software called TaintDroid that uses dynamic taint analysis to detect and report when applications are sending potentially sensitive information to remote servers. "

" Concerns about unauthorized access to private information by Android applications were raised earlier this year when a popular wallpaper application was found surreptitiously transmitting the user's phone number to a remote server in China. Google's investigation of the matter revealed that the developer of the application was simply using the phone number as a unique identifier for user accounts and was not threatening the user's security or doing anything nefarious. Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google,

" Schmidt was talking to The Atlantic about the possibility of a Google implant – a chip under your skin that would track you and provide easy web access. That, Schmidt said, was probably over ‘the creepy line’.

I'd added "scroogle SSL search" to my firefox search engine window, but a few months back all the searches were returning some message basically saying google had blocked them, sorry. I just checked it again and it appears to be returning results as before.

I recommend leading two lives. Like right now I'm at school, but I'm talking through a proxy so I can get through filters. At the same time I'm logged in with my real life information to school websites. Proxy basically masks the activity you do through them and people can't tell where you're coming from.

There are many free proxy services, like the one I'm using now:
http://hidemyass.com

You can also use services like this to run Google and Google will not have a clue in hell who you are. Like in my browser without HideMyAss it will display my username, but behind the proxy shield I'm not signed in. There are limitations to proxies, and some wont let you post on forums, are slower, and have some other limitations but if you can learn to use them with sensitive information so you can appear as sheeple, you will have smooth sailing.

I'm getting to the point where I might have to default to Firefox. I did use it with a proxy for a long time but that proxy just seemed to die so I stopped using it. I also don't visit a lot of the same places these days so it's not such a big deal. I just started using ghostery which works much better on firefox than IE.

Firefox clearly just works better but I don't like the interface so much. Thanks for the info on the proxies.

Try the noia skin. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/72/ I haven't found one better.

Also ref control, and set it to block. It blocks the site you came from (aka referrer), so when you click on a link from this site, (for example) to another site, it protects this site's identity, and your browsing patterns as well.
