There is no cash in the local economy, how can one create a trade/barter group?
Any ideas?

i'v tried bartering in the past. money exists for a reason.
it usually devolves in to the drywall guy thinking 1 hour of drywall work is worth 20 hours of my IT skills or me thinking 1 hour of my IT skills is worth 4 cows.
good luck with it, though.

Instead, everyone's labor is valued in differing amounts of intrinsically worthless pieces of paper.

yeah, it's sad but true. in my experience, everyone thinks what they do is the ultimate arbiter of value.

Well, I was thinking about creating a Silver currency and signing people up to use it in a kind of way like the VISA and MasterCard networks work.

Oh I agree.
I just find it funny that everyone seems to think their labor is so valuable, but at the end of the day, everyone ends up working for nothing (tiny bits of paper not fit to be used to wipe one's ass with).

actually, that might work if you get a good group of people. at one point, we had a group of about 10 of us trading with the norfed dollars. then 1 guy got sent to jail, 2 other guys moved, and me and 1 other guy started hoarding the norfeds because silver was picking up.

As long as FRN's are "coin of the realm" (lol... coin...), what you propose is against the law... Gresham's Law.

Bad money drives out good money; why would you pay someone in REAL money, if they are happy to except, and in fact prefer PAPER?

Because there is no money (bank credit) in circulation in the local economy. If we create our own unit of account in Silver and keep the books in Silver units, we can create our own credit.

that's approximately how banks worked, before the Federal Reserve decided to create their Cartel.

i can tell you from personal experience that people like me will ruin it. we will hoard the silver and not put it in to circulation. we will try to find some other way to pay instead.

sounds simple, a NO CASH Barter group
put the NO CASH out front and in big letters for anyone who shows interest
what does one have to trade/barter with ?
1 labour/skills/knowledge
2 items/crafts
let the 2 sides make their own arangements
if some guy is a prick and over-values his " stuff "
word will get out quickly and he'll be watching from the sidelines
a possible caveat could be interference from the gov't looking for their cut

Part of bartering is NOT setting prices.
I suppose having a rough guide or baseline is good to start with. Some things will be unlisted or totally unusual.
With foods, you could begin an egg standard. What can be traded for a dozen eggs.... or make it easier, 10 eggs. Then one egg is 1/10 of that.
You could start with current prices and convert to egg prices just like this site does it with "gold dimes".
Year............................2000.......... 2007/8............. Increase
Gold Dime (gd)..............$1.38........... $4.88.................255%
Gasoline.......................$1.50........... $3.10.................107%
Houses (median)............$169,000..... $246,900...............47%
Eggs (wholesale)............ $0.47........... $1.60................ 240%
Milk............................. $2.79............$3.91..................40%
Bread (white, per pound)..$0.93...........$1.28.................. 38%

Prices will change depending on need and availability.

Why do you need a barter group? Barter is exchange without money. It's what people dis before the dawn of civilization. Any group can create money easily. It is just a medium of exchange. Money makes exchange a lot easier. But you don't want the kind of money we have now that can only be created by debt to bankers.
Here's a system for creating a medium of exchange within a group that is simple and easy to use:
http://www.michaeljournal.org/localmoney.htm
You can impute the value of the exchange unit by how hard you have to work for it. This system starts like a monopoly game, where the 'banker' gives everybody a starting amount. Beyond that, it is a real life monopoly game that involves real economics.
I think this would have significant advantages over a barter system.

Well, had a first meeting with 6 other people and they seemed highly enthusiastic, two of them have been working together to meet with other people this coming Sunday afternoon and they tell me there are 12 people who have confirmed they will be attending.
I am hyped up! There seems to be more interest that I had expected.

Nothing to be paranoid about, we will also address that and make sure we are in compliance with the law.
