Uh-oh, seems that 5 of the 33 Chilean miners trapped were subcontractors, and appear to have been treated as second class citizens during the 17 days before contact with the surface was established.

There may have been some ugliness involved.

This is the part that disturbed me.


Psychologists on the surface had to come up with a strategy to overcome the divisions within the group.

“It was important to have them all working together as a team,” said Alberto Iturra, the chief psychologist at the mine, confirming that there had been a split. “I don’t exactly know what occurred between them but the most important thing is the problem was resolved. The system we used worked and since then they have been operating well as a team.”

When the miners were first discovered, it was thought five of the 33 were showing signs of depression when they refused to take part in a video to be sent up to the surface.

They took random orders/suggestions from psychologists on the surface?

I like the fact that they sent for legal papers while still down in the ground. There must be a juicy story behind this to request contract documents while you were down in the hole.
