Amid growing dissatisfaction with federal employees, a group of younger, web-savvy feds are planning to march on Saturday in defense of their coworkers on the sidelines of Jon Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity."

Organizers of the "Government Doesn't Suck March" (their choice of words, not ours) were inspired in part by last week's Washington Post poll that revealed widespread negative perceptions of federal workers.

"We hear it day in and day out: the government sucks, federal employees are lazy and their positions are redundant," said march organizer Steve Ressler, founder of GovLoop, a social networking Web site for public servants.

"It's time to turn the tables and remind the world that government employees just happen to be people -- people that don't suck," Ressler said in a message sent to The Federal Eye on Sunday announcing the march. Government workers "are a lot of cool cats" who work hard, listen to good music and watch Stewart's "The Daily Show," "but that's all after they've spent a whole day keeping the country running," he said.

Ressler's attempt to raise awareness while having fun jives with the spirit of Saturday's "Sanity" rally and the mission of GovLoop, a site he launched in 2008 (around the same time The Federal Eye began!). The site counts tens of thousands of members -- most of them under age 35 -- across the country and around the world, who swap ideas, share tips and arrange to meet virtually or in person with counterparts from local, state, federal and international government agencies. Ressler launched the site while working as a Department of Homeland Security employee in Florida, but it grew quickly and last year he sold GovLoop and quit DHS to run it full-time. The Washington Post maintains a content partnership with GovLoop as part of our coverage of the federal government.

The "Government Doesn't Suck March" to Stewart's "Sanity" rally is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the North end of the National Air and Space Museum. Government workers and their friends and family are encouraged to join up and march together to "put a human face on governmental bureaucracy, to show the country that you're capable of having a laugh and "to send a reminder that we're not red tape, we're not slack-jawed desk jockeys and we don't suck," Ressler said. (You couldn't have used "stink" could you, Steve?)

Really?

I thought it was non-.gov people getting up and going to work to produce something of value that kept the country running.

I'm dumb I guess. Good thing the .gov is there keeping us all motivated to survive and have lives.

Things have gone so far that if you cut out all the federal worker jobs you would be in serious trouble. You would need to allocate resources to productive agendas. I think a start would be to have the IRS become the Internal Refund Service. Checks could be returned to pay back the illegal taxes as the employees go through the past data.

Governmentsucks.net says the real problem is the government lusts. 8)

http://www.governmentsucks.net/

As a society and people I believe we are being suffocated and subjugated by the law. And the root of the problem, in my opinion is this. After each and every election we get a whole new group of over zealous politicians who feel it is their duty and responsibility to enact new laws. They get into office and feel that if they do not propose and enact some new legislation then their constituents are going to feel that there not doing their jobs. The president or governors who sign these bills into law are also afraid if they don't sign these pieces of legislation the electorate is going to feel that they too are not doing their jobs, and of course it all boils down to one thing. They all want to be reelected, they all want the power. And isn't that's what it's really all about, the lust for power?

I think that it is a good idea that a "Government Doesn't Suck" march is planned because everybody knows that the gov't is a wonderful organization and it is here to help us. :sarc: We just need a reminder every once in a while and having this march is a wonderful idea to remind us of how important that gov't is needed in our lives. :sarc:

Gov't does not suck because the gov't is providing us with health care (Obamacare), Food (via Food Stamps), Housing [via Section 8] and Social Security to name a few wonderful gov't programs to help us live our lives. :sarc: Mommy gov't knows best and we should listen it since we are not capable of doing for ourselves. Just ignore the small "details" of how mommy gov't is providing all of this for us because it is not important. As for all of that talk about 1099 reporting, Federal deficits, and the national debt..........Blah Blah Blah. Nothing to see here. As for all of the talk about Social Security going bankrupt and Medicare going away................Blah Blah Blah. Just ignore it. The "enemies" of the gov't are spreading false rumors about our wonderful gov't and they should be ignored and reported to the nearest gov't authorities.

Who are the "enemies" of gov't? The enemies of gov't are 1.) The physical gold and silver buyers, 2.) The preppers that stocking up on food and ammo and 3.) The doomers on internet forums predicting dollar crash and economic doom. These people are all enemies of the gov't. Stay far away from them.

I am just so happy that I am just normal sheeple person and I am very happy that gov't is actively involved in every aspect of our lives.

GO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!!!!!! :sarc:

The government is an imperial hierarchy. Most of the workers are a part of somebody's empire--supporting it simply by their presence--to give the impression that their boss has some power.

Those of you who blame the 'government workers' for the nation's ills are narrow minded and ignorant. The lower levels of the government hierarchy are only responsible for following orders--whether they agree with them or not. At some level in the hierarchy agreement with the policies is required. That is in the upper middle management levels--somewhere in the area of GS15 and above.

If you want to avoid targeting individuals who are as innocent as you seem to see yourself, then limit your criticism to the empire builders.

I personally think the whole idea of government sucks. But the people who are the government are mostly innocents just like we all think we are. They don't deserve any more abuse than they get from their bosses in the government.

I'd say air traffic controllers generally do a very good and important job. However, they are well compensated, with a median salary of $115,000, and retirement availability at age 50.

I disagree with you on this point. If you work for the government the least you could do is recognize that your pay comes from the theft of those who produce, and admit that you are on the side of the oppressors who hold the gun to the heads of the rest of us.

In an unhampered market economy, air traffic control would be something that people would be willing to pay for voluntarily. I wouldn't equate any praise to air traffic controllers to praise of government; I say those working in that field do a good and important job in spite of the government, not because of it.

Regardless of what people would be willing to pay for, it would be damn near impossible to have a non government regulated air traffic control system. I'm trying to envision it in terms of the U.S. Postal Service, but it's not really a good analogy.

The air traffic control system originated as a way to keep planes that were flying in the clouds from running into one another. Technology could easily solve this problem today without the need for "air traffic controllers". The reason this doesn't happen is that it would put air traffic controllers out of their cushy government jobs....

Actually having people in the tower is a safety precaution just as having pilots in an airplane is.
Air control maybe sitting on a chair, but its not cushy by no means. Its one place where you must always stay alert and three steps ahead of an accident.

I won't deny that we have laws that are corrupt, and our whole system for enforcing them is corrupt as well. I'm not arguing that 'Government doesn't suck'. I think it sucks more so than most people. I can't remember a time since I became an adult when I didn't think government sucks. It has always sucked as far as I can remember. It's because the government itself doesn't obey the laws that limit its power--the Constitution. They find every possible way to violate the Bill of Rights. They claim that they enforce laws, but the hypocrisy of this claim is transparent not only to children but to most adults who are not sheep.

I think it is hypocritical to claim that 'Government Doesn't Suck'. Having a march to express this thought is like proclaiming that Slavery is Freedom, or that Ignorance is Strength, or that War is Peace. Most of us who are not on the dole, who do not work for government, and are occasionally victimized by its stupidity and cruelty have no problems grasping how badly government sucks. The people who think Government Doesn't Suck are those, who like Dr. Faust, have made a deal with the devil. One day soon, the devil will collect his due. Meanwhile, you can't blame the generally sucky state of the government on the lower level members of the hierarchy, who are just trying to make a living like the rest of us, and are generally unaware of how corrupt the organization that employs them is.
