LOL... I was walking home from a late night walk... I do this from time to time... I carry a folding blade with me, I will cut a man's face if I have too... BTW... so watch out ~ximy... :)
I pass a closed driveway, with block walls on three sides, near an alley... neve had an issue there, but tonight, I heard a scuffle in there, couldn't see inside... I passed by then stopped, and the shuffling continued.. I knew, (you know sometimes how you just know) it was a man and a woman... I stopped right at the middle blocking the way into the street and said, "What are you doing in there" in my most fierce female voice, (yeah right)...
He said, "Sorry to disturb you." Seemed to be a Caucasian voice, I walked away and said, "When I return you better be gone." and came home... freaky.. I think I should go back and see if they are gone... typing this gave me more energy...

Remember....don't take a knife to a gun fight.

Ximy, don't be bringing a knife to a gunfight.
FWIW, I learned several years ago not to get involved with domestic disputes, which you have no idea if that was a domestic dispute or an actual assault. In the case which I gained my experience I was very fortunate the instigator didn't file charges on me, even though I did the proper thing (intervening in what I perceived to be an attack). In some instances the woman will swap ends on you in defense of her sweetie. Hate to say it, but it's best to keep your distance.
Now the ONLY time I would intervene with deadly force if it was an obvious child abduction or kidnapping by a stranger to the child.

It's usually better to call 911 and hope for the best if you think something may be wrong. You always want to remain alert and take care of your safety first.

You guys are right... i don't know why i did that... I usually walk fast and ignore everything around me, any whistles or calls or such.. it was night, dark, maybe in some way I helped out.. I don't know... I always believed it was a man's place to get involved in things like that, and women should simply move along... I just don't know...
I feel all tense and nervous now and afraid and ashamed all at the same time...

You can only do so much, and under the circumstances that would have been to call the cops on your cell phone. You have to take your own safety into account first. Armed only with a knife intervening could have gotten you killed in a heartbeat.

Good for you ximmy. I'll assume it was not obviously a domestic dispute.
And no need to go back. If anything was to happen there you probably prevented it by spooking them.
I'd have done the same thing, especially if it was 'on my block'. Course I'm in an area where guns are not common and am a male over 6" tall and my dad and his brother were both cops. 8)
And I stay well clear of ANY contact with raving drunks.
Just had my own midnight altercation typing this post. A rat in the floorboards! Time to get the traps out, my place was a wintertime rat haven before I bought it, and it appears at least one has not yet found a new boss is running things. ;D

Ximmy good companions on latenight walks are a flashlight and a gun. In my work at certain times of year I spend a lot time walking at night checking cattle. There are lots of deer around and they are mountain lion food. I wouldn't want an inexperianced young and hungry lion getting me confused with a deer.
You can get a good really bright 6 volt flashlight at walmart for six or eight bucks. They throw a brilliant beam a long ways. I carry a .357 Glock but a double action revolver would be good. That way if someone approaches you tell them not to come closer, if they keep coming cock the hammer ( click, click) if they still keep coming shoot'em in the guts. Then tell the cops you thought he was going to rape and kill you cause that's what he said he was gonna do.

You heard a shuffle, or some shuffling, and decided that you should assume it was a domestic situation involving a man and a woman?
And people here are telling you that you should call 911?

Ximmy has been watching too many Hollywood movies. Kill Bill depicts a girl killing numerous men with a sword. Charlie's Angels depicts girls kicking male asses. Laura Croft ditto. Resident Evil ditto. Teevee regularly depicts tiny female cops slamming HUGE tattooed bikers onto the hood of their police car. This ain't real Ximmy. You start talking tough and waving around a knife in a dark alley at midnight and some guy is gonna kick your ass and disfigure your face.

Ximmy, I think your heart is in the right place, but you should never enter a dark alley at night. The reality of it, is the knife isn't going to help you much.
Consider taking pepper spray and a whistle with you on your night walks. Or, one of the those small compressed air horns. You sound that off, no turd is going to stick around for long.

i had something similar happen.
i was driving in SF in my little VW squareback and saw a man wrestling with a woman on a streetcorner. i stopped. the guy had a large hunting knife on his belt. i had my car keys.
they stopped wrestling and the woman told me, "you don't want any of this", something like this. so i kept driving.
anyway, sounds like Ximmy tried to do the right thing, and lived to write about it. that's good.

Pepper Spray?!? If taking a knife to a gun fight is stupid, what is taking pepper spray to a gun fight? For what it's worth, Ximmy you need to get your CCW and get a pistol to carry with you everywhere you go. The weight of that responsibility will make you think twice before deciding to get involved in any sort of altercation, because you have the power to kill if necessary and won't let yourself get foolishly involved in anything less than a life/death situation.

Many times you do something and you don't know why........like this one time at the club I saw a fight between a 6.4 feet guy and a 6. feet guy........I came behind the 6.4 guy and pull him off and threw him to one side and then told him "Pick a fight with a guy your own size"........they guy stood up took a look at me and walked away.......I am only 5.8 feet hahahahahahahah.
Or in the army.......at the chow line this 6.5 feet guy came and stood infront of me instead of going to the end of the line.....I grab him by the waist and lifted him off the ground and took him to the end of the line and then told him "Don't try that again"........he stayed in place........heyyyyyyy Ponce is Ponce.

I think I conditioned myself to act when I lived above the Kalamata Grocery store in Calgary.
First time the store was broken into, the next morning when I found out, I remembered hearing something that in hindsight could have been breaking glass in the middle of the night.
The second time the store was broken into, I got up, saw the glass on the sidewalk from my apartment above, and called the cops.
The third time I told my girlfriend to call the cops as I got dressed, then shadowed the burglars back to their apartment building and watched the windows in the stairway to tell what floor of the apartment building they went into. Went back and told the cops, we went back to the apartment building, woke up the super, I described the two to the super, and he told the cops what apartment they lived in. They went up to the apartment and found the loot (cigarettes).
I was all set to fly back to Calgary for the court case (I had finished college by then) but two days before they plead guilty.
Pretty much any time I hear a strange sound and my gut or intuition tells me to pay attention, I figure it out. Usually only takes a few seconds to find out and stand down.

Hey Ximmy
Glad nothing happed to you, we all know men are stronger and are better fighters then women !
(unless you are lucky enough to get close enough to kick them in the balls, then you know you are way to close.) that might work better then the knife, you don't want them to take the knife from you.
I'm not sure what I would do if I were in your shoes, I always have a cell phone handy so you could call 911 if you are in the city. You never know what kind of crankfly, crackhead is in an alley or if they have a gun.
It's different if you were out in the middle of nowhere, (at least you have half a chance,) where you could be holding a shotgun, hollering as you cock it, and having already put a call into the sheriff.
Stay safe Ximmy ;)

As I posted long ago, even here I am not safe..........was shot twice while taking my night walk (double tap) with a .22 with a silencer..........one bullet graced me and the other one went about 3/4 inch into my love handle..........took out the bullet myself with the help of a guy that used to be my friend........I was black, purple, blue and yellow in the whole area for three days...........and no, I didn't even called the cops.....I stll walk at night but now have my own toy and usually step of the road when a vehicle dives by.......only about two vehicles drives by on my walk.

Ok Awoke, third times a charm... ximy will try to apologize by recounting the events to the best of her recollection... ;)
There is normally a flood light in that particular driveway, where I walk/run is pretty much all lighted and I stay in places where I cannot be boxed in. That night it was dark in there, I noticed that first, then as I passed by I heard leaves rustling on the ground by moving feet, and noise like two persons shoving each other (the sound of shoes pushing, scuffing, sliding)... all in one or two seconds of passing by. At that moment I stopped and backed up and listened, they did not see me.. I listened for about 2 seconds more, and looked in... I "believe" I could see the form of a man keeping a woman in check, they were not kissing, she was trying to get away from him but not yelling... in that one or two seconds I decided two respond... (It did not matter to determine or analyze a course of action, in the time it takes for that you will be dead)... "What's going on in there!" I said. They both stop. He says, "Sorry to disturb you." I walked away saying, "You better be gone when I get back." Simple, direct, non-confrontational, maybe I stopped a couple making out, maybe I stopped a potential murder... who knows, who cares... I'm glad I did that.

There is a shooting range in town that offers gun lessons and I plan to eventually sign up for some gun lessons because I feel that will help me to better understand and to safely use a gun.
I have shot a gun before in the past. At a shooting range near where my parents live, I have shot one of my dad's guns (Ruger Mark II .22 semi-auto pistol) during my visits to see my parents and my dad closely supervised me when firing one of his guns. It depends on the circumstances to, The .44 will blow my hand off ( to much power for me I don't have hand strength) and the .22 I might not be able to hit em, also don't have to worry about a little one getting a hold of the shotgun as it is hanging on the wall well out of reach and she couldn't pull the trigger and get on the wrong end at the same time.

OK.. I'm the last one to give weapon advise but I do remember reading about weapons before I came to the idea for an 870... some info was on this site...
For semi/automatic weapons I understand most of the bullets fired are spray that does not hit anything, and the constant reloading issue.
For handguns, marksmanship. In a range I can concentrate on form and aim... In an emergency situation I'd probably hit the ceiling, and every other thing before running out of bullets or having an attacker overcome me.
I've used a shotgun before and am comfortable with it, the recoil, & I can hit two clay pigeons from a launcher (probably no big deal). It makes an visual impression, it's easy to load, fire, can stop an attack while a bullet may not.

Once you have a firearm that fits you and you've got the basics down then you train and train as often as possible. Think of it like martial arts, it IS a martial art. I am doubly confident that in a pressure situation I will correctly and safely produce, center and fire my weapon directly into the target with deadly effect. That confidence is born through thousands of hours of practice. You don't have to be at a range or use live ammo to train although it is necessary to train completely. Never forget what you are training for, either. You can train for the wrong thing. Live targets don't stay in the same spot and just react by losing some paper ignoring you being squared and center. Also, the gun is not always going to be already in your hand and it may not always function as expected; train for that.
That said, keep a gun on your person because it is impossible to train for retrieving a gun not on your person when crisis strikes.
Finally, like any true martial artist; condition your mind to detect and avoid confrontation before it exists and condition your behavior to de-escalate situations you may find yourself in. If you find yourself having to use your gun you have most likely already failed at some previous opportunity to prevent the situation. There are, of course, extraneous circumstances that just find you as the unlikely player in a deadly scene no matter what (e.g. the knife attack in the convenience store video (http://gold-silver.us/forum/firearms/knife-attack!!!!/) posted yesterday).

I am doubly confident that in a pressure situation I will correctly and safely produce, center and fire my weapon directly into the target with deadly effect. That confidence is born through thousands of hours of practice.
10 hours down, 990 to go.
+ being aware of what's behind what you're shooting at ... very important.

because McDonald's was economizing on video cameras, that mugger will probably never be caught.

A pressure situation is one in which you recognize a deadly threat and have but a split second to react. The guy at McDonald's never recognized the threat. That can happen to anyone. I'd like to think I'd have noticed a person standing next to me and not been completely unprepared so that when the swing came I wasn't just knocked out cold. In that event I still wouldn't produce a firearm, that swing was not an application of deadly force nor intent of grievous bodily harm.
A pressure situation does not apply to being unconscious. I hold no delusion that carrying a firearm magically generates a shield of invulnerability. As I said before, a true martial artist avoids the confrontation to begin with and that all takes place in the mind and the attitude.
The fact is, when you are in a situation where you do bring a firearm into play you need to have trained every necessary muscle to act as programmed because the natural thing to do is lose control, lose sight and lose the fight because we were not born with guns in our hands.

Ximmy, If you like shotguns get a shotgun. They're certainly better than nothing, a lot better. Also they are relatively inexpensive. But a handgun is more adaptable. For instance, you can carry a handgun while you patrol the alleys of your neighborhood. A handgun can be managed with one hand, while you drive, or call the police with the other hand. You can drop a handgun in your purse or your backpack so you can have it beside you in motel rooms while traveling.

If you ever move to a (semi) free state, a handgun would be the best way to carry all the time. Certainly not the best weapon once a fight starts, but at least you will have something. However, if you are limited to using a gun for home defense, the shotgun is king.
As mentioned above, a handgun is not the best weapon to have in a fight, and neither is a knife. BUT, either of them is better than nothing. In a previous post, someone said you shouldn't start a fight if all you have is a knife. My response to that is "What kind of weapon should you have if you want to start a fight?" Certainly not a handgun. A long gun would be better, but still far from a sure thing. Maybe it's best to just not look for a fight.

A good compromise of a shotgun and handgun is The Judge, by Taurus. It is a revolver that shoots shotgun rounds. Yes, not allowed in Ca however.
Strange that I can own one in Canada, but you can't in Cali. You're worse off than I thought!!!

Can people living in Toronto, for instance, own handguns?

I'd recomend a used p32 keltec. they are the smallest I believe and pack the most wallop of the easily concealable pocket guns. I've been buying used ones for a little over two hundred dollars. they have a seven round magazine + one in the chamber. I carry an extra magazine in my pocket. Just having a concealed firearm in your possesion when you are alone for me is comforting. I forget I'm carrying the P32's. If I wanted fire power I'd carry my Glock 33 in .357 sig with extra mags IWB but it's more cumbersome. My p32 is always with me and it's like not carrying at all.

Give it up, buddy - you are leaving WAY too much information in your wake for this site's moderators to uncover and act upon. A good first step would be to quit with the "anonymizer" proxys and VPN networks - that shiit gets OLD, and gets NOTICED around here.

He can't keep track of all his sock puppets.
AlterEgo, etc, Ulysses was key posting name on gim
for his real beliefs, political, 9/11, etc, on here he did
that as Odysseus, real beliefs, political, etc, his " real
brain" and beliefs posted, now Ulysses and Odysseus
are the same name, same person, Ulysses is anglicized
version of Odysseus, and I explained it, what it means,
on gim and here, that thread on here is gone, who
was Odysseus ? Very political, ends justifies the means,
liar, cunning, etc, etc, on a voyage, deceiving, etc,
this is extreme main character VS the other extreme
main character, exact opposite, Achilles, the two main
characters, the lesson is not be be either, not good, etc,
there is more. This monkey is well read and knows history
and how to manipulate, ask Hoarder in all his JewJitsu
arguments with him, Hoarder spent more time talking to
that Khazar than anyone, later as Immanti.
As Mayhem, well he chose that name well.

As near as I can tell, San Soo is cheat codes for life. It's not perfect, but it is engineered to work from any position (sitting, laying, standing), and to end fights in as little time as possible, sometimes within only a few seconds.

Unfreaking believable... this sock puppet pocket pool player is up, about, and charging hard... with his full 4 inches of undesirable pleasureless prick... Umm maybe I can find you a nicely matched "homo"sapian to conduct your advances with...
I guess since you can't find a suitable man, you have to pick on women...
