SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An unexpected bonus for thousands of Western Massachusetts Motorcycle Riders: Refund checks from their Insurance Companies.
Attorney General Martha Coakley says more than 5,400 refunds totaling more than $1.4 million dollars went out to motorcycle owners in Hampden and Hampshire counties.
Coakley said ten insurance companies have just completed the process of sending more than $17.5 million dollars to eligible owners across the Commonwealth. The companies are:
Arbella Mutual
Metropolitan P&C
Plymouth Rock Assurance
Pilgrim Insurance
Hanover Insurance
Norfolk & Dedham
Liberty Mutual
OneBeacon
Quincy Mutual
Safety Insurance
The settlements relate to allegations the insurers overcharged tens-of-thousands Massachusetts motorcyclists by using inflated motorcycle values to calculate insurance premiums.
Average refunds in Hampshire and Hampden counties are $263.00. 257 are between $1,000 and $6,554.
Consumers who think they may be entitled to a refund can use the 'Attorney Generals Motorcycle Insurance Refund Lookup Webpage at www.motorcycle.ago.state.ma.us to find out whether they are eligible, and if so, how much they're entitled to receive.
Consumers who have questions about the settlement or their refund check may visit the Attorney General's webpage about the motorcycle insurance settlements or call the Attorney General's Insurance & Financial Services Division at 1-888-830-6277
