Interesting observation though. I had a discussion with the chief engineer of a major manufacturing plant who had to take the witness stand on some product liability issue. He had been coached by the company lawyer to start each statement with the phrase "To the best of my knowledge ...." in order to be able to come back later and modify his testimony.

He said that the attorney told him that if he left the witness stand leaving everyone in the courtroom the impression that he was the most stupid SOB alive that he would have succeeded. Trying to be the smartest SOB is a losing proposition.
