Schwarzenegger bans welfare cards at psychics

LOS ANGELES – Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneger says welfare recipients can no longer use state-issued debit cards at medical marijuana shops, psychics and other businesses whose services have been deemed "inconsistent with the intent" of the program.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Schwarzenegger sent a letter to county welfare directors Monday announcing that ATMS and point-of-sale card readers in such businesses will be removed from the network that accepts California's Electronic Benefits Transfer cards.

Other businesses affected by the ban include bail bond establishments, bingo halls, cruise ships and tattoo parlors.

In June, Schwarzenegger barred welfare cards at casino ATMs following a Times report that CalWORKS cards were being used to withdraw cash in more than half the casinos in the state.

Mainstream media becomes indistinguishable from the Onion in their reporting...

A better solution would just be to deduct the amount spent one month on psychics/booze/cigarettes/psychics/bingo/slots from the amount given the next month since they obviously don't need that money to live.

And how long has this gone unchecked? I wonder if California could have avoided bankruptcy if these (apparently un-)common sense rules had been applied when the first handouts were given.

If you aren't using welfare on food, genuine housing, clothes, or gas for your car, or a necessary medical procedure, you shouldn't be getting any.

That's not to say who should be getting any in the first place...But as long as there IS a welfare program, it should be restricted to the uses above.

Perhaps instead of just giving out "money", people receiving benefits should instead be required to submit the bills for the items you posted and just let them cut a check directly for those things.
i.e. cut out the middleman

I can already see the argument about that now . . . it's racist, of course.

I also would like to see drug testing for entitlement recipients. If I am not allowed to do drugs at work, they're not allowed to do drugs to NOT work.

I am against prohibition in general, but if drugs are prohibited, then the people getting the money I earned should be prohibited from doing drugs.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneger says welfare recipients can no longer use state-issued debit cards at medical marijuana shops,

This is OT, but my nutty cousin from California gave me some "medical marijuana" at a family reunion this summer. She had eaten one; and she intended that I eat it there, but I said no way....given that being stoned at family reunions is right up there with shopping at Walmart stoned and having bamboo driven under my fingernails.

This weekend I ate HALF of what she gave me and went rock climbing...holy sh*t. Rock climbing? I spent all day sitting on the ground trying to hold onto the world.

This is from a guy who smokes a little bit every day.

The package said "CAUTION: Do not operate machinery, may cause drowsiness..."

DROWSINESS? Hell, that was the least of my worries...I would have welcomed drowsiness

Mrs. Old had me sign in the book that "I will Never, ever, eat marijuana again."

They would have spent that amount anyway. I don't think it adds up to billions.
