New Delhi: The White House will, of course, stay in Washington but the heart of the famous building will move to India when President Barack Obama lands in Mumbai on Saturday.
Communications set-up, nuclear button, a fleet of limousines and majority of the White House staff will be in India accompanying the President on this three-day visit that will cover Mumbai and Delhi.
He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.
Arrangements have been put in place for emergency evacuation, if needed.
Obama is expected to fly by a helicopter -- Marine One -- from the city airport to the Indian Navy's helibase INS Shikra at Colaba in south Mumbai.
From there, he will drive down in Lincoln Continental -- the Presidential limousine -- to the nearby the Taj Hotel.
Two jets, armed with advanced communication and security systems, and a fleet of over 40 cars will be part of Obamas convoy.
Around 800 rooms have been booked for the President and his entourage in Taj Hotel and Hyatt.
The President will have a security ring of American elite Secret Service, which are tasked to guard the President, along with National Security Guards (NSG) and personnel from central paramilitary forces and local police in Mumbai and Delhi.
Similar arrangements will be in place in Delhi, with the Air Force One to be kept in all readiness throughout Obama's stay here from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday morning.
Maurya Hotel, where the President will stay, has already been swarmed by American security personnel and protective measures have been put in place.
Security drills are already been carried out at the hotel as well as Rajghat which he will visit.
Sources said 13 heavy-lift aircraft with high-tech equipment, three helicopters and 500 US security personnel have arrived in India ahead of Obama's visit.
The US security has also brought interception and obstruction device, sniffer dogs, rescue gadgets.
Apart from Obama's Air Force One, a few private luxury jets carrying top American corporate leaders, who are part of Obama entourage, are also expected to arrive in India in next 2-3 days.
All high-rise buildings in the vicinity of Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel and Delhi's Maurya Sheraton hotel, where the US President will stay, are being sanitised and security personnel will be positioned on rooftops to prevent any air-borne attack.
The Ridge area - opposite Delhi's Maurya Sheraton hotel - has been illuminated by floodlights as part of the heightened security drill.
The Home Ministry has already issued an alert for Mumbai and Delhi asking authorities to take extra precautions during Obama's visit as well as on Diwali on Friday.

When he flies around the world to different countries, he doesn't bring 34 battleships, Secret Service contingencies and that amount of personnel with him, usually.
If anything, I would be getting prepped for a FF attack on US soil, that he doesn't want to be here for.
But I tend to err on the side of caution.

Quote for the day: The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. - from someone on my Skype contact list
On another note, Anderson Cooper was giving Christine Bachman a hard time about her saying that this India trip was costing $200B/day essentially coming across as telling her "that's crazy talk, where do you get that???" With this trip Obongo is acting like his expense account has absolutely no limit whatsoever, as if he's trying to spend all that he possibly can in the shortest period of time, like he hasn't a care in the world.

Tunnel for Obama near Mani Bhavan
Since it is difficult to monitor such a congested area, they came up with a quick solution which left the Indians accompanying them amazed: A bomb-proof over-ground tunnel — to be installed by US military engineers in just an hour.
The tunnel would be a kilometre long and measure 12ft by 12ft — enough to let Obama’s cavalcade pass through. The tunnel would be centrally air-conditioned, fitted with close-circuit television cameras, and will be heavily guarded at every point, including, of course, its entry and exit.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will not be protected by a vast armada of 34 US warships when he visits Mumbai this weekend, officials said, calling reports from India on security preparations "comical."
The claim that many of the 288-ship US naval fleet would be deployed to waters off Mumbai was "absolutely absurd," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters on Thursday.
US officials usually decline to discuss details about security precautions for the president, but the media accounts circulating out of India were so off the mark that press officers at the Pentagon and the White House said they felt compelled to speak up.
"I will take the liberty this time of dismissing as absolutely absurd this notion that somehow we were deploying 10 percent of the Navy -- some 34 ships and an aircraft carrier -- in support of the president's trip to Asia," Morrell said.
"That's just comical. Nothing close to that is being done," he said.
Although the United States is known for taking elaborate precautions when it comes to presidential trips, the accounts out of India described a massive naval fleet steaming towards Mumbai and an astounding price-tag of 200 million dollars a day for security.
The White House bluntly dismissed the cost estimate, and said that the price tag for security was similar to trips for previous presidents, without offering a specific figure.
"I think there's been a lot of creative writing that's been done on this trip over the last few days. I've seen other reports with some astronomical figures in terms of what it costs to take these trips," Morrell said.
India's NDTV website ran a report claiming a 34-ship security detail, citing the Press Trust of India, which was in turn picked up by the popular US website, Drudge Report.
The report, without citing sources, said that Obama "will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday."
The report said the devastating attacks on Mumbai two years ago, which were launched by militants who arrived by boat, prompted the naval presence.
Referring to the Mumbai assault, Morrell said it "should not come as a surprise to anyone" that Obama would require security during his visit to the city.
While a huge show of US naval power was not in the offing, municipal authorities in Mumbai said they had removed coconuts from trees around the city's Gandhi museum -- where Obama is due to visit -- just in case.
"The coconuts were falling off, so we requested the local authorities here to remove the remainder," the executive secretary of Mani Bhavan, Meghshyam Ajgaonkar, told AFP.

Am I the only one who sees this whole issue as a partisan distraction meant to "divide and conquer"?
Presidential travel is always terribly expensive, but nobody says boo about it when their party's guy is in office.
If John McCain were president and making the same trip, I doubt we would be hearing about how much it costs, which, by the way is sheer conjecture as the actual cost of Presidential travel is spread out among the DoD, The Secret Service, and the State Department.
I am disappointed in Rep Bachmann for even bringing this up. She should be ashamed of herself for trying to make political hay from such a non-issue.

So I heard that this whole "34 warships" thing was a lie.
Anyone?
I heard that too. I read an article where the Pentagon denied the warship story.

It's the US gov's word vs. a single unknown source in India. Neither has very much credibility...

Kinda like that whole "It wasn't a missle! It was an airplane" thing off the west coast.
(Or the pentagon on 911 for that matter)

In this instance I think I'm going to side with the govt :o
The only reason is because like some general said, that amounts to 10% of the Navy. Mobilizing 10% of the Navy is a huge logistical challenge not to mention the vulnerability it creates. One warship, in this instance, would suffice just as well.
Then again, I'm not privy to what's going on behind the scenes so perhaps 10% is needed.
