View Full Version : WTF someone took my broken dryer I left on the street?

First off the thing was 15 years old, and I think I paid about $300 bucks for the damn thing then. The rollers and belts were done, and the damn thing couldn't dry laundry. I'm talking about a busted piece of crap, it's was so busted even congress worked better than this POS.
Well I left about 90 minutes ago to basically tell my mother I'm not longer her son, long story, and I come home and the bastard is gone. Keep in mind, I live on a Cul-de-sac, and yet someone drove down here and snatched it up.
Why would someone want something like that?

General, I am making a WAG here but let me ask you this.........Was there any copper components inside the dryer? If there was, then that MIGHT explain why someone took it. Since copper prices are also rising, then thieves are taking whatever copper they can find to sell it for scrap to get cash for it. That has been a problem in my area for the last few months. As I mentioned, this is just a wild guess on my part.

Because at any given moment, there are countless people driving around in pickup trucks collecting junk to sell at the scrapyard.

I don't know...but back in the day, I used to LOVE to shoot up a "new" washer or dryer...Produces a really Great effect...
Same thing around here with TVs.... I had a 27" JVC, GREAT sound on it, it shot it's wad :D ...I called a TV repair shop, started telling the guy about it, he interrupted and asked "is it more than 10 years old?" I said yea, before I could say anything else....he said "throw it in your dumpster" .... :D ...>10 years old.....trash it...so I put it out front...next day it was gone

All good answers.
Or, they could be new depression age entrepreneurs . . . they pick it up, fix the belts for $25 and sell it on craigslist for $125.

I don't think so, ever since the Olympics copper prices have backed off a lot. I think Sirgonzo is right, but I can't imagine the scrap being worth very much. I just really thought it as being ODD, and at the same time, I realized I haven't gotten a safe yet, and since I live on a cul-de-sac, I could get robbed blind and no one would no a damn thing.

You'd be surprised.
Hardly a day goes by that I don't see some guy in a beat up pick up truck with a half ton of junk in the back.

I know some guys who scrap, that is exactly what happened. Take it apart, put all the pieces in different piles, repeat, then make a trip to the junkyard once one or more piles is large enough.

Back in about 07 before things fell apart, a bunch of guys in this area were setting out big steel scrap hauling bins in some of the local lots with signs on them....."free metal disposal". Hmmmmm. Pretty smart. They're still doing it. The things are full about every 10 days.

If you don't realize that metal appliances are worth money then you are living a sheltered life. Your cul-de-sac will not save you. Better go back to your mom.

Back in the mid 80s a guy I know used to deliver new appliances, where he made big money was returning the old ones... 100 bux a pop and he could fit 12 or 14 in his van everyday. I could live on that these days.

First, why'd you leave it in the street?
Don't you know there's Ordinances against leaving your old junk in the street?
You should just be glad you didn't get a ticket.
Second, seeing that it was broken, why are you upset that someone picked up the junk you left in the street?
Third, what were you planning to do with it anyways? ???

And now that we know, expect to get one.
...it's was so busted even congress worked better ...
You should be ashamed of yourself, knowing someone else will now have to deal with them,... I mean, it.

And a cheap one at that. Throwing away a perfectly good dryer and bitchin when some takes it away for him.
Man, the nerve of some people. :P

LOL- I have a dryer with bad bearings.... the thing is 40 years old... so it seems... and I already replaced a belt on it... maybe twice?
I see ads for free appliance removal. Scrappers will sell the scrap steel.... and they LOVE motors loaded with copper. I was thinking about pulling the motor before I allow the hulk to be taken.

Hell I'd take it if I was driving by and not in a hurry. Metal here is actually 185 a tonne. A few bucks is a few bucks. It would take me 2 minutes at most to stop and toss it in the back, so if I get $5 - $10 for it at the yard that's like $150 - $300 an hour for easy labor! I go to the scrapyard occasionally anyway as I clean up one of my places so it's not like I'm spending any more than that 2 minutes on the dryer.
Had it been a washer or a stove heavy enough to be a struggle I might just keep going, but a dryer for sure I'd take.
It's incredible what people throw out. Everything has value. The dump in town is the biggest scam... they charge you to drop off metal, and they charge even more to drop off old computers! At least they accept used motor oil for free (so nice of them!)

Ximmy, you probably shouldn't let GoD borrow your clothes.
You're pretty little and he'll just stretch them out.

The thing may have been a POS but the guy didn't know. In his mind there could be a good chance it's in perfect working order and he won't know until he plugs it in. Americans throw away a lot of good stuff. Look at cash for clunkers.

Even more interesting than the mystery of how an old dryer set out on the street could possibly be gone (as if it was stolen)...is why you would tell your mother you are no longer her son? :o

What is sort of cool is it took abt 30 posts to question that factoid! GoD's casually throwing that fact in at the end of his rant as a by the way thingy. :lol
Doc, Methinks you hit that nail squarely on the head. ;D
Gsus!... You got to love it and its denizens, one never knows when the next wabbit is going to be pulled from the hat. It is a total Hoot!
