View Full Version : New law: ID check to buy cough medicine

I had to show my driver's license today at the pharmacy to buy over-the-counter cough medicine, because it contains dextromethorphan. You have to be 18 or older to purchase it.
Are you kidding me?!? I asked the elderly clerk "What kind of bull$hit is this?" She said that's exactly what it is; just started this week. So I said to her "And we keep voting these guys in?" She said "I voted against them all, but it didn't do any good." Then she said tongue-in-cheek "I don't know how I lived to be 70 years old without all these safety rules." She apologized to me as I left, but I assured her it wasn't her fault.
There's no end in sight to this nonsense.

I'd say you didn't need it that bad and should have walked away as a matter of principle. Every little nibble just keeps the erosion going and it sounds like the pharmacy is taking cues from the TSA.

Teenagers found out that if you drink the whole bottle, you get pretty fucked up. So now they only sell to adults, just like booze.
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextromethorphan)
Since their introduction, over-the-counter preparations containing dextromethorphan have been used in manners inconsistent with their labeling, often as a recreational drug.[4] At doses higher than medically recommended, dextromethorphan is classified as a dissociative psychedelic drug, with visible effects that are similar to those of ketamine and phencyclidine (PCP). It can produce distortions of the visual field, feelings of dissociation, distortions of bodily perception, excitement, as well as a loss of comprehension of time.

ID for spray paint in Portland also. I walked out, went to clackamas county 3 blocks south. Fucking morons in the gov. Anal retentive bags of walking fear, jealous of those who are free.

And when the economic collapse finally occurs just wait and see what products the scumbag career politicians will likely criminalize next.

you wait until they discover you can buy rice wine at the chinese grocer without any ID at all. There are some other things you can get there with a nice alcohol content but I forget. It was a alcoholic juice from memory.

Don't bypass your weekly limit on pseudoephedrine by picking up cough medicine at 2 different stores.
Can you say hi to the officers as they visit you at your house to see if you have a meth lab.

It was pretty popular drink when I was in the Marines. It would be banned from the commisaries.

They are just now figuring this out?? Hell, we were doing that back in the 80's. Here's the part they leave out: drink the whole bottle and you will puke your guts out about 15 minutes later and then feel like shit for several hours. Sort of a buzzkill. Anyone I know who did it did it once, and never did it again.
I'd call that self-regulating.

Sad times indeed.
A couple of weeks back I had to "sign the logbook" when I bought some beer at a store. The logbook is a CYA so the store can say they checked ID but they had their doubts. What I never have understood about that though is that if they're doubting the legitimacy of my ID then why are they willing to sell me beer?
The world is a ridiculous place and our government seems to try harder every year to come up with some new BS law.

Drinking syrup to achieve dextromethorphan plateaus is a fool's errand. The sheer amount of sugar will drastically affect body load and overall experience including nausea. Being an opioid, body load will be high with increased dosage anyhow. Common side effects include flushed and itching skin, nausea and progressively severe loss of motor control. At lethal doses respiratory depression precludes breathing and the near unconscious victim will suffocate.
That said, it is not at all hard to A/B extract dextromethorphan from specific syrups. Other syrups and carriers such as compressed pills contain antihistamines and or expectorants that not only make larger dosages of orally consumed OTC syrup a real threat but also make kitchen extraction much more complex. The correct starting product should contain only dextromethorphan as an active ingredient.
That said, there was a glorious period of time during which pure dextroemthorphan powder could be had by the average joe. That got legislated away right around the year 2000. Nowadays, you either develop enough kung fu to extract a purish powder or you isolate the compound in a ingestable acid such as lemon juice and choke it down in a quick and bitter shot.
For bonus points, if you have powder, it is always a delight to find that inevitable guy in every crowd who thinks powder not only belongs up the nose but that his nose can take anything. DXM powder is extremely painful in the nasal passages.

They've been asking for ID for some over the counter sinus stuff for years in Florida. And, if I recall correctly, they *keep* your information, in case you buy at another store.
I wonder if Book will tell us how great it is to have laws like this to protect the children.
Sparky, is that stuff Robitussin? I was feeling unwell at work a few years back, and apparently I had unintentionally taken more than the recommended amount of Robitussin. It scared the crap out of me. I felt like I was walking on the moon. This is not a good feeling to have in a conservative (as in ties are still mandatory) environment.
I have never had Robitussin since, and that's saying something. ;D

what state are you in sparky
The People's Republic of Massachusetts.
(I hesitate to say that, because in spite of the liberal tendencies, we have a lot of good things and I'm happy to be here. And my particular town tends to buck the trend and is far more conservative/libertarian than the rest of the state. Most of the liberalism for which we are known is concentrated in the larger metropolitan areas, and a handful of well-to-do elitist suburbs. Unfortunately, that's a large voting block.)

It is the generic equivalent of Robitussin. LOL, how did such a smart gal make such a large dosage error??

While minimum psychedelic dosage varies with body weight and propensity for metabolism, it generally only requires about 90mg-100mg. Maximum OTC dosage (ie pill or dosage within 4 hours IIRC) is set at 30mg. I've never seen anyone even remotely take off on 30mg. Practically everyone begins to take off at 90mg. 150mg-300mg is a typical, more or less universally, recreational enjoyable dose. Anything beyond 300mg will begin to get serious with the participant opting to lay down and zone out. OOBEs are common at beyond 500mg. 1000mg is maximum sub-lethal dosage. Anything beyond that and you are flirting with death. An entirely different trip can be had by redosing over the course of several hours. The 1000mg limit can be exceeded when done in redoses over carefully timed intervals (a near impossible task while on the drug).
The DXM experience is divided into plateaus with Plateau 1 being the easiest and most enjoyable. Plateaus 2-3 and are within the grasp of the average psychonaut. The walking on the moon dissociation occurs somewhere between 2 and 3 with the shuffling robowalk occurring solidly at 3. Plateau 4 is for the real tripper and should be approached with due diligence, prior planning and a sitter. A Plateau Sigma exists and can be hard to come by and is generally unsafe. Plateau Sigma can only be achieved through redosing. The Sigma experience is completely OOBE and involves visits by entities of seeming omnipotence.

I'm glad I'm not the only psychonaut here! (although I will say that DXM is not one of my favorite chemicals... that honor lies with DMT... or THC... or perhaps LSD... or maybe psilocybin... or MDMA... etc)

The only real issue with drug use is irresponsible drug use. Uneducated drug use amounts to irresponsible drug use.
