Man Killed By Deer He Kept In His Back Yard
From KYTX CBS19

HARRISON COUNTY (KYTX) -- Benjamin Gerald Rushton, 60, was killed by a deer he was keeping in a kennel in his back yard at his home south of Waskom this morning.

Harrison County Sheriff's Officers found Rushton pierced by the deer's antlers in his backyard around 10:30 Friday morning. The deer was a Red Stagg deer.

Game wardens shot and killed the deer.

Red Stagg deer can get very aggressive during mating season. Game wardens say they don't know why Rushton had the deer in a kennel in his backyard.

The incident is still under investigation. Game warden Chris Green says this is the first fatal attack of its kind.

Deer can become very aggressive around humans when they lose their natural fear of them. You need to be very warry around bucks when the does are in heat. The bucks may believe you are a competitor for the does and will attack to drive you away. Does can be very aggresive protecting their young. Their hooves are sharp and hard and will do a lot of damage.

I've been around deer all my life. Where I live is a wintering area for them and they have become used to me being around and I watch them very closely for the reasons I've stated.

I've been hunting all my life and feel very comfortable in the bush, but this fall I had a situation with a couple of deer that made me a little more cautious than normal. I was in a tree stand and had two bucks come in to within 50 yards. I was hunting the edge of a field and they were behind me in the bush. For those that hunt deer, you know what a snort sounds like....do big deal....we get snorted at all the time where we hunt. Well these two deer were about 40 yards apart and exchanged snorts for about an hour, snort for snort. They must have snorted about 150 times. I've never heard that before. When I walked out, I didn't stick close to the bushline, I made a wide pass out into the field. Something just told me I might get a surprise sneaking down the bushline.
