Shanghai high-rise apartment fire death toll claims 42
THE death toll from a fire which ripped through a high-rise apartment building in Shanghai has jumped to 42, it has been confirmed.

The 28-story building, in one of the most densely-populated districts of the city of nearly 20 million people, was under renovation when the blaze broke out.

China's official Xinhua News Agency said more than 90 people were injured in the blaze, but exact numbers of injured people was not immediately known.

Officials confirmed more than 100 people had been rescued.

A witness told Xinhua that building materials had caught fire, and the blaze spread to scaffolding and then to the 28-storey building itself, which housed a number of retired teachers.

Another witness said some people ried to jump from the building in a desperate bid to escape the flames while others clung onto burnt scaffolding.

The government said more than 80 fire trucks were called to battle the fire, which appeared to have been put out after about six hours.

The smoke could be seen from several miles away.

Authorities said they were continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Duh, the structure wasn't damaged by an large airliner flying at impossibly low altitudes carrying magical steel dissolving fuel.
