TSA agent punched in chest by passenger

A passenger was arrested Tuesday for punching a Transportation Security Administration officer in the chest after passing through a body-imaging machine at Indianapolis International Airport, police said.
According to police, John A. Christina, 51, admitted to punching the officer after passing through the machine and asking the officer about increased security procedures. The officer replied that he does not normally work in Indianapolis and could not answer the question.
Christina then punched the officer in the chest, police said. The officer, who is normally assigned to the Dayton, Ohio, airport, asked Christina why he punched him.
"I was only kidding with you," Christina replied.
Other TSA agents and passengers witnessed the incident, police said, and Christina was arrested and charged with battery.
In a statement, TSA spokesman Greg Soule called violence against TSOs, "shameful."
"TSA will work with local authorities to see that appropriate action is taken," Soule said.
John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, said TSA needs to better inform the general public about the new security procedures in order to avoid future confusion and attacks. It should consider giving passengers an informational pamphlet, he said.
"This absence of information has resulted in a backlash against the character and professionalism of TSOs based on a few widely reported but largely ill-founded claims repeated over and over again by the media," Gates said. "Like all Americans, TSOs deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. These men and women are as the first line of defense against those who seek to harm this country."
AFGE is hoping to one day serve as the only union representing TSOs.
The body-imaging machines are at the center of increased criticism and scrutiny of TSA's airport security measures.

What a waste of a punch and arrest. How stupid!

He could have waited until he actually had some cause.... like getting his nuts tossed or having a fruit salad TSA screener verbally admire his sausage or some other unsemmly thing.

Moron.

Something smells about this? Either the TSA dude made a wise ass remark after going through the scan or Christina playfully gave a fist thump to the TSA dudes chest for some reason and others over reacted. The info here just doesn't add up. Video needs to be seen.

Man arrested after punching TSA screener in Indy (http://www.indystar.com/article/20101117/NEWS02/11170365/Man-arrested-after-punching-TSA-screener-in-Indy?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|IndyStar.com|default |t)

A Connecticut man has been arrested after exchanging words and punching a TSA screener at a security checkpoint at Indianapolis International Airport.

According to a report from airport police, John A. Christina, 51, Simsbury, Conn., was charged with battery as a misdemeanor in connection with the incident about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at the Concourse B checkpoint.

Christina, who could not be reached for comment today, was released from jail on $150 bond and scheduled in Marion Superior Court 10 on Dec. 13.

Jim Fotenos, spokesman for the Transportation Security Agency, said in an airport police report, "Our transportation security officers work on the front lines to protect the nation from a terrorist attack and physical violence against them is shameful. TSA will work with local authorities to see that appropriate action is taken."

Airport officials declined further comment while the incident is under investigation.

Similar security checkpoint incidents at other U.S. airports have drawn concern and protests the past two weeks since TSA instituted search and pat-down procedures that some fliers believe are too personal and intrusive.

It is not completely clear from the police report why Christina punched TSA agent Gregory J. Hutman, 28, Vandalia, Ohio.

The report does not indicate that Christina refused to be screened before entering the concourse and boarding an airplane. He had already stood and been scanned in a full-body advanced imaging machine before the incident.

After he stepped from the machine, the men talked, but full details of the exchange are not in the police report.

But it indicates that Christina said he has a history of medical issues, including two metal implants, a colostomy bag and a fused right wrist.

According to the report, as Christina stepped from the scanner, he asked Hutman a question, though the report doesn't provide details.

Hutman responded, according to the report, "He's not from the Indianapolis airport and was not familiar with the process you are talking about." The report doesn't explain further.

"After the conversation, Christina punched him with his right closed fist in the middle of his chest," the report said.

When Hutman asked why Christina hit him, Christina said, "I was only kidding with you," according to the report.

I'm checking the comments now of the IndyStar. I hope someone posts that saw the exchange.

He or She

Could not happen at a better time if true.

With all of the MSM attention being focused on this topic, this kind of stuff
IMHO it is good. Public uproar will increase and maybe the tsa will be made to
back down on some of the crap they make people do that try to fly.

Quite a few commenters say that Indy has the crappiest TSA agents. Nothing from any claimed witnesses.

I am wondering why they didn't release the video of the exchange.

If you can ask "why did you hit me" it usually means the guy who just hit you wasn't trying to cause any harm.

You might be right, but I disagree. I saw that 81% of people favor full body scans. These stories only enforce the "only crazy people don't want the scan" theme.

I would bet money that is was this. Come on, the guy had a colostomy bag, what kind of a threat do you think he could be? When I was in high school I got arrested for assaulting a teacher because I sprayed silly string on his head during a last day of school celebration. Sometimes it's weird how much people can overreact to non-threatening things. I can see it now, a friendly guy in a good mood jokes with the TSA guy about security, fist bumps his chest and says I'm only kidding. TSA overreacts and arrests him for assault. It reminds me of that police report where the officer made sure to note how the suspect's fingernail scratched his skin in a harsh manner.

K-os, don't lose hope.
Most times when you see a statistic like that, it is not true or accurate. The jewish media uses poll numbers to form public opinion into what they want. The numbers aren't real. They are part of the show.

Opinion-making polls. Sheep see those numbers and think "Oh, well 81% of people just like me think that tazers are OK, so I guess they must be".
Now that that person is thinking like that, they are not necessarily "for" tazers, but they certainly aren't "against" them either. Perfect for TPTB.

I saw those numbers also, But I question where they "get" those numbers! Recently there has been several so called polls about several subjects saying a majority of the people in this country favor this or that, but I question the who is being polled? In my area all of the local media are reporting the people that they poll say just the opposite, that they are not in favor of the scans.

It is these so called national poles, who are they polling? You can pick and chose who you poll to make any poll say whatever you want it to say! 99% of people can be against a thing But if you only poll the 1% you can say that 100% of the people poled said they are in favor.

I do not trust any poll unless it is conducted in a double blind manner, and the population that is polled includes a sample of all areas and demography's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography)

Just saying IMHO ;D

Sounds like about the same level of "assault" as last month's officer bubbles threat to arrest the girl for blowing bubbles... :D

Stricktly from the stance of fighting,

I'm just going to say this

You go for the eyes, the throat, the nose, the ears, you pull the hair, you gouge up under the jaw, you hit the liver, the kidneys, the spleen, the bladder, the heart, the groin, the knees.....

"The Chest" is not a striking target. If you're close enough to hit the chest, you're close enough to hit 2-3 of the targets mentioned above in about 2 seconds. Based purely on the description given, he was not trying to out and out cause injury.
