I'm listening to One Second After (an audio book) , by William R. Forstchen, and I am right in the middle of it. I thought there was a thread on it somewhere, but it must have been at GIM (RIP) because I searched here and did not find.
I was wondering if any doomers, or anyone else has read it or listened to it. I don't want to give any of it away, but it's about an EMP attack, and what happens when no electronics work. It's SHTF stuff, for sure.
It's pretty interesting to listen to it, and think about how I would handle this situation or that . . . militias, food shortages, dogs, etc.
This book makes me think of a lot of you on here. SHTF2010 (a/k/a Canadian Guerrilla if I remember correctly), in particular. There was just a scene about wild dogs, and it made me think of a thread that he had.
I started listening to this while waiting for a bus in Monterey, CA, and the stark contrast to watching all of the people around me, while listening to the horrors of what was going on in the story, was disturbing.
I'll probably finish this book by tomorrow, while driving, and I am going to be sad when it's over . . . simply because I love the doom. I really can't imagine a happy ending at this point.
If anyone can recommend similar books, particularly those that are available as an audiobook, I'd appreciate it. (I have read The Road, and seen the movie.) I looked up Molon Labe, and it's not available on audiobook, bummer.

Yeah, I watched that in the theater with my neighbor. She suggested it, because she loves Denzel. She was disturbed by it, to say the least. I enjoyed it though.
Edit: That movie made me stock up on soap, shampoo, and conditioner. ;D

One Second After was good. I'm familiar with the little town Black Mountain, so it was really fun to read.
There's another doomer book, "Alas, Babylon", by Pat Frank, that is set near my current location, so that was interesting, too. It's about a massive nuclear strike that levels all large American cities, and how the folks in small-town Florida coped.

I read it a while back and it's a good warning of how if you don't jump right into reconstruction politics that you might end up giving all your food and liberties to the local football team who are now the local military force and some wussy ex-military desk Jocky will be King Arab.

I'm going to check out One Second After. Does it have any propaganda in it? I notice the forward is by Newt Gingrich.
I listened to the Road and didn't like it at all the movie was just as bad IMO.
The only two books I can think of that are similar that I have read are Republic, and Prayer at Rumayla. They are both read by the author and while he isn't the best narrator I enjoy listing to books read by the author since they at least convey accurate inflection.
http://www.sheehanmiles.com/
They are both free.
Not sure if you like Stephen King or not but all the books I have listened to of his are phenomenal.
One of the most important things to consider when it comes to audiobooks is the narrator, the best I have ever heard is the late Frank Muller I'd listen to a book of his even if I wasn't familiar with the author.
If you are looking to delve into a pretty long series Stephen Kings Darktower Series is a few thousand pages total.

Yes it does, there is a definate bias agianst southerners even though "King Arab" lives in the south because he married a southern girl. But he makes it clear he is a Self Righteous Yankee. Also it tries to paint the picture that Race will play no part in any of the post collapse world. Which as we all no is B.S. people for the most part will divide along racial and ethnic lines. Also the people who did prep unless they were the dirty hippy VW types are portrayed as dangerous gun nut types.

I also bought two mini binoculars so I can see potentional threats from a far.
I think those would have made all the difference IMO.

They are making a motion picture of it, Warner Brothers. I suspect this is typical fear monger stuff, Sounds kinda Red Dawnish to me. I can't picture a typical high ranking mason, or Illuminati jackass going without their electrical vibrator being shoved up their ass for too long.

i find the reader makes a HUGE difference.
and the best books-on-tape reader on earth is Jim Dale.
he does the reading for the Harry Potter series.
if you're not into Harry Potter, it might sound dumb.
but Jim Dale's reading makes it better. he can create different personalities sort of like Robin Williams can.

Patriots by John Wesley Rawles was very enjoyable for me. I highly recommend it. Written by the guy who runs survival blog. New edition came out in 2009. A lot of the book goes into detail which did get boring, but it was easily skimmed. Several great scenarios and I have re-read a few portions. It is the book I loan to test peoples' reaction as possible friends in the event shtf.

"One Second After" is good. I liked it. Another was the online book (full version - 611 pages) "Lights Out" by Halffast. I see that there's another SHTF movie coming out called "Remnants". Small budget indy film but you never know.
A New SHTF Movie Coming Soon
http://www.remnants-movie.com/v2/synopsis.html
In the tranquil suburb of Excalibur Estates, ART, his wife GWEN, and their CHILDREN lead contented lives. Art cajoles with his neighbors,MERL and LANCE, then spends another quiet evening with his close-knit and loving family. They don’t notice news reports about an odd cosmic anomaly – an unusually bright star and a series of impending gamma-ray flares. Despite these strange warnings, Art prepares for another day at work.At the office, the routines of daily life are interrupted when breaking news broadcasts a government press conference. Authorities describe recent cosmic activity from a type of super-dense star that has released a burst of gamma rays. This massive electromagnetic storm is heading toward Earth and will affect every part of the planet – disrupting electricity grids, cell phones, and every other modern convenience. As the government declares martial law in urban areas, requests to remain calm go unheeded as everyone in Art’s office panics and flees to get back home before the gamma rays cripple the planet’s infrastructure. Art and Gwen struggle to get through the dangerously gridlocked traffic to reunite at home. When the catastrophe hits, there is little outward effect – the skies light up as the electricity and all communications are disabled indefinitely. Art and his family provide emotional support to one another, wondering what it is that is happening – some sort of end times? No one knows, but they are resolved to stick together as a family and a community.
The residents of Excalibur Estates awake to a very different world. As they survey their neighborhood, they learn that they must survive in a simpler lifestyle than they’d previously enjoyed. Merl, a former military man who has been prepared for such an event, is stocked up with supplies. The neighborhood falls into contentious chaos, conflicts arising particularly from the antisocial MORRIS. Art becomes an unexpected peacemaker as he takes a stand and gives an impassioned speech – imploring his peers to take charge of this situation and band together to turn their community into one that thrives despite this adversity. Art’s leadership inspires the residents of Excalibur to brainstorm, discuss how to manage their resources, and create their own list of rules for maintaining law and order in a world where those systems have disappeared. The development buzzes with activity as they pool their skills and supplies, create stockpiles of food to be rationed, work out hunting and gardening systems, develop a defensive perimeter. Soon, they’re having fun and bonding in ways they never did when they were reliant on mindless entertainment – now they’re enjoying each other’s company in a more pure way than ever before.
Their peace is disrupted when they find that Morris has been stealing food. According to their rules, Morris is imprisoned. When he tries to escape, his sentence is lengthened. Meanwhile, Art, Lance, and Merl see a box of Red Cross supplies dropped a few miles away. They arm themselves and venture out. They are ambushed by THUGS but manage to escape, now aware that other neighborhoods haven’t fared as well. When Morris is released, he tries to attack Art’s family. Restraining his desire to kill Morris, Art banishes him from the community. The maligned Morris wanders to another town, run by THUGS. He negotiates his own survival by telling them about the wealth of supplies within Excalibur. These lowlifes send spies, which alerts Art, Merl, Lance, and the others to the possibility of attack. As Morris deceptively fuels the flames of hatred, the thugs arm themselves with makeshift weapons and launch a brutal invasion of Excalibur. Residents fight back to defend the prosperity they’ve built with their own blood, sweat, and tears. As the two villages clash, many good people are lost in the bloody, intense suburban war.

Oh man, as soon as I heard Newt Gengritch did the Foreward, I was put off. And it does have a very slight pro-military slant. No more pro military than I am already slanted, so I was in my comfort zone.
I am not sure Hillbilly is talking about the same book. They don't portray Southern/Northern anything. Race did not play into this book, but it was set in the mountains in NC, where I imagine race isn't a big deal, if you know what I mean.
The book was pro-prep, and that's good enough for me. ;D
Thank you for the suggestions.
P.S. - I went to the Patton Museum today, and thought about you (well, you and your avatar) ;D.

Thank you for this. I forgot that I had this on audiobook until last night, when it was almost lights out at Joshua Tree, and I was looking for a way to get to sleep. milehi and I each had an earbud, although I think was awake for more of it than me. It is a little dry and "financial" in portions, and my mind wanders (that rarely happened with "One Second After"), but I listened to another hour or so driving today.
Good suggestion! I will be listening to this tonight.
Hey, what's with that guy's name . . . "James Wesley, Rawles"? I have never seen a person with a comma in their name, and I was wondering if someone knows the significance. The narrator emphasizes the comma when he is speaking the name, too. Just curious.
