I just watched Casablanca for the first time in a long time the other night.
Kubrick films deserve a place on your list...such as: Dr. Stangelove, Spartacus, The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, and one of my favorites; Eyes Wide Shut.
I also second Tombstone and Forrest Gump.
The Godfather trilogy also belongs in this thread.

This a bit off-topic as it's not a go to movie for me or anything but I saw it the 1st time this weekend and it certainly explicitly deals with corruption of governmental powers; Serpico.
My repeat viewing movies have little meaning, I suppose; The Shining and Four Rooms.
For a movie with meaning though it is hard to decipher; The Fountain... or for that matter any movie by Darren Aronofsky (ie Pi or Requiem for a Dream)

I first watched The Fountain after SLV^GLD recommended it and I will say that it was different from most other movies I've seen.
I found it quite interesting.

Promise yourself you'll stick it out through room 1. Room 1 is such a setup for the rest of the movie that the pacing is really strange. Once you've seen it and you watch it again it doesn't seem quite as weird. If you like Tarantino films you'll dig Four Rooms. It IS a new year's movie so if you can time your queue to watch it on or around NY it will fit perfect.
Dang, I wanna watch it with you, now.

good replays and I am making a list to down load and burn to disk!
Made a newbies mistake on saving to disk, eats major space and when doing a backup. or image of the drive, If movies are there it will take (seems) forever! Had 10-13 and hours to back up disk, now down load and burn, and erase.
To try to clarify, or at least try, If you are not making backups of your system, and settings you are doing a major no no.. How many reading this have had a wipe out and then had to rebuild again?
Have learned to only keep on hd just long enough to make sure good copy, then burn to disk, and hd is wiped, dam they take alot of space.!!
Keep the list coming It is interesting in gereranl to see what others count good..

My post on this subject from GIM1:
This is a thread for movie fans. Of all the movies you've ever seen, pick up to 10 of your favorites, and make a list. It doesn't have to be in any kind of order (mine isn't) - the only criterion is that the movies you pick have to have meaning to YOU... and have left a lasting impact on your world view or the way you view films. If you'd like, please also give a brief (or long, if you'd like!) explanation as to why you chose the movies you did. Here is my list:
* The Lives of Others (Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck)
* Blade Runner (Director: Ridley Scott)
* The Princess and the Warrior (Director: Tom Tykwer)
* Queen Margot (Director: Patrice Chéreau)
* HEAT (Director: Michael Mann)
* Fallen Angels (Director: Kar Wai Wong)
* Barry Lyndon (Director: Stanley Kubrick)
* The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Director: Philip Kaufman)
* Layer Cake (Director: Matthew Vaughn)
* Das Boot (Director: Wolfgang Petersen)
* Ran (Director: Akira Kurosawa)
OK... I know. I couldn't keep it at 10 or less!!! It was impossible... but I did manage to prune it down to 11, so not doing too bad here!
Here are the reasons I chose each film... hope this doesn't turn into a novel!
The Lives of Others: The human condition meets the East German secret police. Hilarity ensues. Actually, not much hilarity - just a down and dirty peeling open of the human condition, including examinations of things such as love, betrayal, state vs. individual, censorship, and compassion. This movie impressed me so much that I started another entire thread on GIM... and everyone who has taken my recommendation to watch this film so far has come back to me and thanked me for recommending it. This is a film that MUST be seen to be believed - it's german with English subtitles, but WELL worth watching.
Barry Lyndon: Not much of a film with respect to plot, it's basically a simple story of a man who is struggling to increase his social status and position in 19th century Europe. However, visually this film is SOMETHING AWESOME. This is the first film I ever saw that made me realize that cinema could be a legitimate ART FORM, every frame of this film is like a beautifully painted canvas. Stunning.
Blade Runner: If I thought Barry Lyndon took filmmaking to an art, I hadn't seen ANYTHING yet. Blade Runner completely blew me away... in every way that I COULD be blown away. This is still, to this day, the most incredibly visually stunning and mind blowing film I've ever seen. As an added bonus, unlike Barry Lyndon, Blade Runner has a complex plot and underlying message that is well worth unraveling as you watch the cold gritty beauty/ugliness of its futuristic panorama. How human is human? What does it mean to be human? What is the nature of memory? What are the moral questions involved with genetic engineering? What does it mean to be a slave? These are just some of the philosophical topics touched upon by my favorite film I've seen so far.
Fallen Angels: Pure eye candy. Wong Kar Wai (Director of Fallen Angels) is undoubtably the Asian equivalent of Ridley Scott (Director of Blade Runner), and in some ways actually surpasses Ridley's visual artistry. This film is the story of an assassin and his female partner who are doing "business" in China. In Chinese with English subtitles - but dialog is fairly minimal during most of the film, so it's not a hard film to watch if you don't like reading subtitles.
Layer Cake: A drug crime film set in Holland and England. Not really that great of a plot, acting showcase, or story - but something else. This film has STYLE - to spare. The "feel" of this movie is very odd... almost like a fast paced crime novel comic book come to life, but with subdued grace instead of outright flash and "in your face".
HEAT: A crime film set in Los Angeles. Visually compelling, and the story is excellent. It also contains one of the best heists, and possibly the greatest cops/robbers shootout scenes in cinematic history.
Queen Margot: A little known french film about a decent-hearted woman who's destined for the throne, in a cruel-hearted world that all TOO real. This film, above every other film I've ever seen, shows you OUTRIGHT the evils of hereditary monarchy, and the religious social order it thrives in. Catholics massacreing Protestants, and vice-versa. Now THAT's entertainment!
The Unbearable Lightness of Being: The story of a group of people behind (and in front of) the iron curtain during the cold war. Almost unbearably heartbreaking - an excellent account of how communism crushes the life and hope out of people.
Ran: Japan's greatest film maker does his interpretation of Shakespear's King Lear. Tragic doesn't even BEGIN to describe this film... it's tragic to the 56th power! Sweeping, epic, glorious, and just plain amazing. See it! Japanese with English Subtitles.
Das Boot: Quite simply the greatest war movie ever filmed, in my opinion. The story of WWII german submarines and the men who lived and died in them... from the German perspective. German, with English subtitles.
The Princess and the Warrior: One of those rare movies that actually gives you and uplifting, and positive outlook on humanity instead of the typical cynicism or syrupy schmarmy Hollywood "feel good" crap. German with English subtitles.
Along with those, I would also highly recommend:
* Idiocracy
* They Live
* Serpico
* V for Vendetta

If I was stranded on a desert island (with a VCR or DVD):
1. Wizard of Oz (Brilliant, even ignoring the gold ounces "Oz" allegories and the federal reserve "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain")
2. Casablanca
3. It's a Wonderful Life (Or is it? Since he doesn't get what he wants, this is somewhat dystopian)
4. Vertigo (What the hell is going on? You don't know until the end!)
5. 2001 a Space Oddessey (the opening scene is worth the price of admission; also: "You'll find that quite difficult without your space helmet" is another gem)
6. Blade Runner ("I didn't know how much time we had...hell does anybody?")
7. The Gods must be Crazy (comedy, but a great commentary on modern "civilization")
8. Start Wars Trilogy (Luke: I-I don't believe it!" Yoda: THAT is why you failed.)
9. The Matrix ( I believe that reality is like this, just not run by computers...but by inorganic beings)
10. Lord of the Rings trilogy

Book when I have a actual disk ripit4me, dvdshrink, but most now are torrants, and only on hard drive long enough to make sure a good copy then burned to dvd disk, most rips I find I can place 4-5 ripped movies on a duel layer disk 8gig or so.
Edit: I use imageburn mostly, still looking for a burn progran that will leave a disk open to add to it, and not close it at the end of the burn. Nero I used to like but from what I understand they have really screwed it up..
Anyone have some suggestions on burning software that can leave a dvd open and not close it after burning it.??

I love, love, love me some good horror and it might take me a year to recall all the good ones but just off the top of my head:
Last House on The Left (1972)
The Stepford Wives (1972)
Them (2006)
The Strangers (2008)
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Halloween (1978)
The Birds (1963)
Cape Fear (1962 and 1991)
Looking for Mr Goodbar (1977)
Carrie (1976)
The Shining (1980)
Christine (1983) (Stephen King adaptations are all pretty good)
Candyman (1992) (Most things with Tony Todd in them are worth watching)
The Good Son (1993)
Deliverance (1972)
The River Wild (1994)
Wolf Creek (2005)
The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
Black Christmas (1974)
The Devil's Rejects (2005)
Camp Sleepaway (1983)
Anything by David Lynch (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet)
The above list was stream of consciousness with some date checking because some of the above were remade and the remakes are terrible. I tried to provide suggestions that stay away from the typical horror plot devices and pure camp (except camp sleepaway which defines the genre). Some of it is more good suspense than straight up horror.

from imdb.com : A horror film told in three parts, from three perspectives, in which a mysterious transmission that turns people into killers invades every cell phone, radio, and television.

one that i thought was pretty awesome (very much along the line of four rooms) is The Signal (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780607/). (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780607/) it's from 2007.
from imdb.com : A horror film told in three parts, from three perspectives, in which a mysterious transmission that turns people into killers invades every cell phone, radio, and television.
Sounds good! I'm a sucker for scary movies, even though I shouldn't watch them due to my over-active imagination.

HEAT: A crime film set in Los Angeles. Visually compelling, and the story is excellent. It also contains one of the best heists, and possibly the greatest cops/robbers shootout scenes in cinematic history.
i think Ocean's 11 and 13 would have to be added to the list. both good Heist movies.
Ocean's 12 was entertaining but the plot was sort of wacky.
nobody mentioned Alien or Aliens or Alien Resurrection !?
"My Stepmother was an Alien" sucked but some of the scenes were good for a laugh.
'Day of the Triffids' was pretty good.
i think if i had to pick one genre it would be sci-fi or Heist movies.
anybody know a good Sci-Fi Heist movie ? maybe Dune and Avatar sort of fall in that category. in Dune they're sort of trying to steal the Spice. In Avatar they're sort of stealing the Unobtainium.

The recent film "Inception" is a sci-fi heist.
Not really a "movie" - but the sci-fi television series "Firefly" (and sequel movie "Serenity") is about as close as I can think of to the "sci-fi heist" genre. they did a great job with Bruce Willis as the oil hand guy called to save the world by drilling a hole on the giant asteroid that is coming to strike the Earth.

I watch movies to be entertained and that is about it. I don't want any more or less. If I want reality, I can find it everyday. I am frequently pissed-off by the social engineering crap that is found in most movies but I deal with it and try to enjoy the story. I have spent a shit-load on dvd's in the last 15 years and I know the kids and grand kids have 'borrowed' a good deal of them, so I'll never see those again. I need to organize my movies so that I can find them and search through them. I don't know how to down load movies and I don't know if it is legal or moral.
Love comedies. The Great Lebowski as someone mentioned previously in this thread was a really great comedy. Kingpin was also great along the same lines. I love any thing I've seen with Clint Eastwood; Absolute Power and Bloodwork were two recent ones (relatively) I thought were outstanding.

I love movies and t.v. shows that show this time period (late 50s through the early 1960s). It's pretty much the last time when clothes, cars and furniture all were beautifully styled.
Vertigo is one of my favorite movies, but I don't know if it qualifies as a movie to keep for all time. I like most Hitchcock movies, as they usually have some kind of thread of DOOM! in them.
http://images.zap2it.com/images/movie-8151/vertigo-3.jpg
It's why I put up with Mad Men's silly plot twists, and why I really love period shows like "Any Human Heart." This latter t.v. serial is about an English Forrest Gump-like character whose life spans almost the entire 20th century.
It does a good job showing how nice people used to dress up until modern times (around when Thatcher got elected).
The episodes that take place during the 70s through the 80s are ghastly, especially when the character, now old and living on dog food sells papers for a socialist group that turns out to be part of the cell of a militant German left-wing group.

This movie was interesting, I wouldn't say it's for all time, but it was a big commentary on TPTB, set in a world-without guns. It is ultra-modern yet everyone has resorted to kung-fu and boxing for self defense. Cowboys still exist but no guns. The most powerful man in the world is an old woodcutter. He runs every gang east of the Atlantic ocean.

The ruler of the tribe is a white man, who apparently was stranded there in WW1 and became king of the indigenous people. These two try to defend the village from the Japanesse assaults, and their "Phantom Colonial"
Please find the name of this film, it's a great piece. "King" is somewhere in the name, but I can't find this movie to save my life.
do you know when the movie was released?
edit: was it farewell to the king? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097334/)

Killing Zoe
I dunno, man... that's one I personally would never put on a top-whatever movie list... I'm almost ashamed to admit that I've seen it! I mean maybe, if you're into prostitutes telling you how they'd like you to crap all over them, or if you think over-the-top killing for killing's sake is cool, or how you should slam heroin and "stink of sex" when you visit Paris, then it's a pretty good movie. Myself, not being into any of those things, found it outright disgusting... one of the few movies I've actually regretted spending the time to watch! :(
It's like a Quentin Tarantino film without any of Tarantino's "style" or a single character you actually care about - leaving only the endless pile of blood-soaked corpses and extreme human depravity as a cheap substitute. Let's kill someone every 2 minutes with a machine gun, then break up the monotony with the refreshing change of pace of... well... killing 12 people with a machine gun! ::)
Did you really like this movie? If so, why? ???

And now I have to go put it on my Netflix queue!

Common now, no one could remember "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" .... Could you ask anything more from Jack Nicholson? And at such a young age? Even still, the movie will forever remain open to many interpretations.
What about "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" Film or English 101 should have this meshed into many heads other than just mine. Great film, and a basis for many others.

Land and Freedom 1995
Peoples militia flick in which author George Orwell (in real life) fought as a member of the POUM.
7.4/10 on imdb. Worth checking out. Mostly English with some Spanish subtitles.
"Spring 1936, a young unemployed communist, David, leaves his hometown Liverpool to join the fight against fascism in Spain. He joins an international group of Militia-men and women, the POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista). After being wounded he goes to Barcelona, where he decides to join another group of fighters."
"British author George Orwell fought alongside members of the Independent Labour Party as part of POUM militias; he recounted the experience in his book Homage to Catalonia.
Likewise, the film Land and Freedom, directed by Ken Loach, tells of a group of POUM soldiers fighting in the war from the perspective of a British member of the British Communist Party. In particular, the film deals with his disillusionment with the Soviet Union's policies in the war."
Edit: I would definitely put this on a must watch list. The acting is superb, and so is the dialogue.
.
.
.
.
Also Gettysburg 1993
"The four and 1/4 hour depiction of the historical and personal events surrounding and including the decisive American civil war battle features thousands of civil war re-enactors marching over the exact ground that the federal army and the army of North Virginia fought on.
The defense of the Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge are highlighted in the actual three day battle which is surrounded by the speeches of the commanding officers and the personal reflections of the fighting men. Based upon the novel 'The Killer Angels'. "

Has anybody suggested Intolerance yet? A 1916 silent movie, this one is a fascinating one directed by D.W. Griffith. It's a "fugue" of sorts, one of the few movies of this sort that I know which has intertwined several layers of storylines of different eras together, and the action unfolds both in ancient Babylonian, Renaissance French and Modern times, cutting back and forth between them but forming a coherent sum of its parts however. I enjoyed this film - the different stories are masterfully edited to flow and work together and the action scenes are, for such an old movie with its technical limitations in mind, breathtaking! The cast is likable as well, especially the cute heroine in the Babylonian story.
It's a long movie, and the action won't start right at the beginning. But when it did, it kept me glued to the screen right up into one of the greatest conclusions I've ever seen in a film. I highly recommend not to pass this, as daunting as it may feel to start watching a silent film!

It totally dispels the myth about sharks, and will give you an appreciation for how beautiful, and perfect the ocean is (and how messed up people are in comparison).

I haven't reviewed this entire thread for it, but there's the B movie cult classic 'A Boy and His Dog' from '75 with Don Johnson.
A post-apocalyptic tale based on a novella by Harlan Ellison. A boy communicates telepathically with his dog as they scavenge for food and sex, and they stumble into an underground society where the old society is preserved. The daughter of one of the leaders of the community seduces and lures him below, where the citizens have become unable to reproduce because of being underground so long. They use him for impregnation purposes, and then plan to be rid of him.

Lots of great movies mentioned so far. Here are a few Sci-fi and then some various movies from my collection. I have way over a thousand DVDs and several boxes of videotapes stored in the barn (probably won‘t be any good in a few years). I began collecting movies in 1978 when a blank tape was $20, a VCR machine was $1,000 on sale and a prerecorded movie was about $60. That was in 1978 dollars too !
