MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - 72-year-old Dick Thompson isn't sure if he wants to fight or give up.

"I want to get the hell out of here right now — too much hate," Thompson says one minute.

"I think it's a bunch of bull," he says another, vowing to stay.

Thompson faces eviction from his 38 acres in Madison County. The county lawyer tells 24-Hour News 8 it's because Thompson is breaking too many rules, laws and ordinances; Thompson has no water, no sewer and no electricity in his recreational trailer that he calls home.

"I'm a country boy," explains Thompson. "I just want to be left alone."

Thompson is mighty fine, thank you very much — along with his dog, Ace, his horse, Fritz, his bird, Sunshine, and many more.

The eviction papers state go-time is “Nov. 30 at noon,”' though no one came — not yet.

how can they evict him from his camper? i mean, the bank doesn't own the camper, right? and how can they evict you off your land if you own it?

Do we really need the government to FORCE every single individual in the country to have county sewer lines? Seriously? Under whose authority?

It's not constitutional since nobody had county sewer when the constitution was written : )

He doesn't own it... the county does. He only has title. He pays taxes on his property so the county can create ordinances (hard work, creating ordinances... someone's got to pay for those services). If he breaks the rules, the county has the power (no right, but power) to toss him off.

Everything we learned in skool is shit. Especially these days.

Ne electricity means no teevee. This character is definitely the fringe element of society. He needs to be placed somewhere and observed 24/7.

That's the core issue, he isn't feeding the parasites.

Absolutely correct. Even though he owns the land, he might as well be a squatter on the sidewalk if he doesn't pay his dues to the _____.

(hint: rhymes with dues)

38 acres is more than plenty for his bathroom needs with out any fear of hurting the ground water. That's pretty fucked up they want to get rid of him. All you need is an out house, people did it that way for hundreds of years. shit my Dad did not have indoor plumbing until he was 12 years old!

It is illegal to be self sufficient. Period.

You have to produce, you have to consume, you have to register, connect, depend, conform . . .

This is so wrong!

That really pisses me off, I didn't know there is a law that says he has to have water, power and sewer?

What about a phone ! he has to have a phone! :sarc:

composting toilet, put a water tank up and have it filled, and hell with the power.

Poor guy why don't they just leave him alone.

This has been happening in all sorts of ways since...forever. HOA's, city, county land use requirements ect.... all placing laws requiring you to pay them....

in the end it is all about requiring you to be apart of the system..making you work for their little pieces of paper....they need you working til 65 - they need the illusion to continue.....wage slaves....

Yep those bastards, in this county you have to have 5,000 gallons water storage in case of fire, other then that I have no idea what they require.

The county doesn't provide me with nothing, no power, water, sewage, garbage collection, roads,
they don't even maintain the county road down below.

This is seriously fucked up, folks. The guy is 72, just wants to be left alone, and they are evicting him off his land, for what ordinances?

This shit has to stop. It's folks like this that are worth fighting for. It's hard to believe, so many turning a blind eye to this.

They say it's not safe and sanitary to be living like that, and perhaps it may not be. But if he really has nowhere else to go, he'll likely be faced with either living on the street or having to sell his land to be able to afford something else.
...but they don't care about the potential safety and sanitation, or lack thereof, of living on the streets.

I wonder, what are the odds that someone might've pointed him out to the "authorities" in an attempt to eventually help relieve him of his land?
I've seen it before where land owners get squeezed out with a lil' help.

If I don't get even a modicum of property rights, then I see no inherent benefit to living in America as it is today. I say it is time to change it. I have many grievances, for which I petition redress and demand remedy.

In the end I think property rights rely on more of what you can keep, how much freedom you demand and how much you can back up with equal might, rather than what they bestow.

Yeah. I don't know what bothers me more, the loss of our rights..or the fact that we have to fly under the radar, to have any sense of actual freedom.

Flying under the radar, come a time where that's not even going be possible anymore.

Libertytree
1st December 2010, 09:31 PM
Flying under the radar isn't freedom, we've still lost our rights. Flying under the radar is at best a way to maybe protect our rights and freedoms at a later date, a prolonged way of saying F You! while more strength has gathered. Under the radar sucks but it really does serve us well at this point.

38 acres is a lot, he could sell a portion of it and fix him up a permanent place on the remaining parcel

Yes he could, but you have to jump thru hoops and subdivide the property and pay the man.

I left a city where the zoning regulations in effect prevent any structure on the property without first using the property as it is zoned. Structure is defined as any object placed on, above or below the ground. Thus in theory, meaning if you get on their radar and they decide to come after the property owner, one could not store a single 2x4 stick of wood on the property without first having a 2,000 square foot house on it first. Usually they only go after small sheds or trailers, but if they choose, they could even keep you from storing a tent and chair on the property.\

And I'll be the guy's 'carbon footprint' is the lowest in the nieghbourhood.

To stop all this shit I think it is going to take neighbourhoods getting organized that they come out enmass and block the gears of the state when the state moves in to attack one of the neighbours like this. Unless of course we get to the point that the state will shoot to kill if anything gets in the way of removing a man's wealth from his property who has paid all his taxes.
