My wife wants to start this hobby and it looks pretty cool too. I started looking at some of the processes and it looks like the "cold process soap" is the way we want to go. We're going to order a 5 or 6 pound wooden soap mold and begin to order the lye and some other ingredients. Does anyone have a good website where it breaks down recipes or the process for noobs? Any tips or recommendations would also be a big help!!
Thanks

What about making your own lye? Feasible, or too much trouble?

I haven't really looked into it too much. I'm not sure if you use the ash from your fireplace but for now I just want to go through with the process of making the soap and then start tinkering with that.

Yea, I'm sure that'd be the easiest way to get your feet wet in soap making.
Only reason I asked is because I was reading about it myself not too long ago while contemplating a use for the ashes.
Be nice to have something to do with them. lol

www.soapcalc.net
has a great calculator and spreadsheets with all the soap qualities of different oils.
I made some coconut, grapeseed and hemp soap that came out very nicely.
Don't be afraid to try the hot method either, it is no big deal at all, I used the oven on low temp, there are instructions for using a crockpot too.
I like to know how to make the things I use, even if I never have to make them.

Why in the world would anyone want to make soap out of jews?
Isn't the point of soap to get things CLEAN?

I know you are being sarcastic, but these comments are kind of sicko.
A real question- how does one make lye in the absence of a functioning chemical industry?

A great question and something I had not thought about until now,
evidently it is made from wood ashes:

If you watch the movie Fight Club, there's some good info on how to make soap. First, you've got to sneak over to your local clinic under the cover of darkness...next, well, I'll let you watch the movie. ;D

Mx ex girlfriend learned how to make soaps, scrubs and lotions by watching videos on youtube. That was two years ago and she now has a booming web based business. She also sells at craft fairs and farmers markets, and trades bath products for food with the other vendors.
Here's her site. Don't tell her I sent you.

I had no idea how easy it is to make lye. I have access to plenty of dried palm leaves.

Pretty sure that's BS created by you-know-who to make the Germans look bad, and to make the holocaust seem much worse than it actually was.
