Temporary Suspension of 2011 10oz and 5oz Silver Bullion Coins
December 17, 2010

PERTH To meet higher wholesale demand for its most popular silver bullion coins, The Perth Mint has suspended production of 2011 10oz and 5oz releases.

In a statement released to dealers, the Mint said: “Please note that demand for the 2011 Koala, Kookaburra and Lunar silver bullion coins from The Perth Mint has increased over the last month due to large demands on silver worldwide. In particular there has been a large increase in orders for our very popular kilo coins which has outstripped our manufacturing capacity. It has been decided that we will focus our presses that make large coins on kilo coins only.

“As a result, we have decided to temporarily suspend production of 2011 dated 10oz and 5oz silver bullion coins until further notice. Please note that silver 1/2oz, 1oz, and 2oz sized coins are not affected.”

Discussing the announcement on the Mint’s bullion blog, Sales and Marketing Director Ron Currie said the supply of metal was not an issue. “Before anyone suggests we’re running out of metal – simply not true. It’s manufacturing capacity that is the issue here,” he wrote.

The reason for stopping the 10 and 5 oz is so the big press can concentrate on Kilo silver coins, which are very popular in Europe.
