I find it hard to think it was anything put malicous intention they chose a black man for the role. From a purley mthological and historical perspect, Heimdall was one of the MOST important gods, and in many cases much more so than Odin (Wodan). Though most the ancient writings regarding him have been lost, what we do know is that Heimdall (in norse mythology) is credited as one of the main progenators of the human race. He is often called the "whitest and fairest" of the gods (I'll leave you to interpret what that means) as well as one of the oldest, wisest, most powerfull and highly respected.

In fact, to the Norse he was so epic that he was said to have been born from 9 Jotun women (Jotuns were a race of gods that were giants) sired by Odin (or possibly Odins brother).

Heimdall is the defender of Asgard and all the gods there within (Including Thor, Odin, etc). He signals Ragnorak (the Norse "appocolypse") when the Jotuns and Vanir attack the Aesir in Asgard and defeats the Vanir god Loki, dying himself in battle.

Im not counting on hollywood to stick to history, and this doesnt offend me as a person of Nordic decent, nor do I practice the religion of Asatru, but it does make it painfull obvious that this is, without any interjected paranoia, an attack at the history of the Germanic and Celtic people of Europe. Which by now, we are all to familiar with from the tribe that runs the show.

Basicaly, thats about what it is. Imagine if a remake were to star a white man in black face as the lead actor in Roots. We'd never hear its end.
