View Full Version : Mint and the 5 oz America the Beautiful Coins

So what's the deal with the mint and their major f'up with these coins. Its only a few days before the end of the year and they're still not for sale. Supposedly some dealers (some of which don't even have a website) are selling them, but no one has any prices or limits or anything yet.

The mint is failing in their mandate for bullion coins and should sell directly to the public.

I'd like to get my hands on a set as well.... here is the latest information I've gathered...
------
Nine out of eleven of the US Mint's authorized purchasers have decided to go along with the new terms and conditions covering the distribution of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins.
The 5 ounce silver bullion coins featuring duplicate designs of the circulating quarter dollar series became hot items once collectors learned of the limited mintage of just 33,000 coins per design. Based on the high demand and limited supply available, one of the US Mint's primary distributors began accepting orders for the coins at a premium considered to be excessive.

Complaints from customers caused the US Mint to halt and relaunch the program with price controls and other measures to ensure broad distribution to the public. In order to participate in the distribution of the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, the primary distributors had to agree to sell all coins directly to the public, limit premiums to 10% above acquisition cost, and impose household ordering limits. The rules seemed problematic for some of the distributors who generally only sell in bulk quantities to other dealers.

The US Mint's eleven primary distributors were able to place orders with the United States Mint from December 10 to 17. The nine who purchase their allotments of 3,000 coins of each designs are included below:

A-Mark Precious Metals (Los Angeles)
Coins 'N Things (Massachusetts)
MTB (New York)
American Precious Metals Exchange, Inc. (Oklahaoma)
Dillon Gage Incorporated of Dallas (Texas)
Prudential Securities Inc. (New York)
The Gold Center (Illinois)
Jack Hunt Coin Broker (New York)
Fidelitrade (Delaware)

The coins allocated to the two primary distributors who did not place orders will be reallocated to active sellers this week.

In the first quarter of 2011, the United States Mint plans to offer numismatic versions of the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. These would be limited to 27,000 coins per design and sold directly to the public via the US Mint's website and by telephone.

Most of these dealers do not do retail; who knows how it will turn out. Being on dial-up, I missed APMEX's initial (inflated price gouging) offer. They have been spanked by the Mint, but they still seem to be one of the only games in town that is able to offer them directly to us.

Yeah some of those dealers don't even have a website, and they are the primary dealers for the mint?

The guberment can't even sell a coin without fucking it up somehow. ::)

Youuch! on that price.
I had my wife call them back and a rep contacted her saying the advertisement had been set three months ago and there was no way to change it. 1st Reserve thought they were going to get some but like many others, they did not. But they were stuck with advertisement at the tune of $500,000. And I thought I was getting flocked.

With today's tech & JIT production/delivery system, I find their explanation highly unlikely.

http://www.sj-r.com/carousel/x1049173619/Silver-bullion-coins-attract-crowd-of-collectors-to-Springfield

Hundreds of people from across the country flooded The Gold Center Monday to get their hands on a set of rare America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins.

The Gold Center, 3000 W. Iles Ave., was one of only nine outlets nationwide that were able to sell the coins to the public Monday.

Owner Jim Hausman opened sales at 10 a.m. Monday, but a crowd of people had camped outside outside the business starting Sunday night.

Springfield police were called to disperse those gathered before Monday, and Hausman hired three off-duty Sangamon County deputies to provide security and crowd control Monday.

No arrests were made, though Hausman said one man who tried to cheat the limit of one coin of each design per household was told to leave.

The coins are 3 inches in diameter and made up of 5 ounces of .999 fine silver. They are the first such coins produced by the U.S. Mint, according to the mint’s website, www.usmint.gov.

They are larger-scale duplicates of the first five quarters released in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which began in 2010 to issue quarters featuring a national parks or other national site from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories.

Hausman said the large size of the bullion coins caused problems during the coin-striking process, so a smaller than expected number was produced.

“(The U.S. Mint) only produced 33,000 of each of the five coins for the entire world,” Hausman said. “It is a very rare piece because of the mintage.”

Hausman said the limited availability of the coins led their price to skyrocket. A set of the five coins goes for $2,500 to $3,000 on eBay.

The Mint last month required that its 11 authorized dealers sell the coins for no more than $975 each and enforce the ordering limit of one per household, Hausman said.

Nine of the dealers agreed to participate and received 3,000 coins of each design. Since two purchasers are not selling the coins, another 700 coins of each design were distributed to dealers, Hausman said.

The Gold Center received its allotment three weeks ago.

“We primarily wanted to take care of our own customers and dealers. Once we got through that, we opened it up to the public on Monday morning at 10 a.m.,” he said.

Just before 8 p.m. Sunday, groups of people started to pitch tents in The Gold Center’s parking lot.

Hausman said he called Springfield police to tell the early-bird coin collectors to move until the morning.

“This is a high-security facility and we can’t have people staying on the parking lot. And there’s no bathroom outside,” he said.

On Monday morning, there were about 500 people.

“There’s people who drove up from Louisiana, Colorado, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin,” he said.

Hausman said one man used an employment agency to have 50 people line up and each purchase a set of coins that he could later re-sell.

“He was caught and told to leave,” he said.

Some people also stood in line for others, which Hausman did not allow. Otherwise, the crowd was orderly, he said.

Hausman said about 600 sets of coins were available Monday morning. They sold out by that afternoon.

He said he predicts the set of coins to eventually be valued in the $15,000 to $20,000-range.

Yeah these got clustered pretty bad. Is no one else trying to get in on these? Seems to me there is a high profit potential if your can get your clammy little paws on a set.

Of course the APs are colluding with secondary sellers. Which is why the Gold Center sold 500 sets to the public at his store and then was "sold out". The other 2500 sets have gone to the secondary market.

HSN had 210 MS69 sets of these a couple days ago for 3800. How did they get so many? Collusion! Also, who buys anything from HSN anyway? They're over priced and they have this new thing called "teh internets" where you can buy stuff from.

Here's all five coins with a normal clad quarter for size comparison:

http://gold-silver.us/forum/gallery/31_08_02_11_2_27_24.jpeg

So here's my honest opinion of the coins. They are too big. Remember, these designs were meant to be on a quarter sized coin, so when blown up to a 5 oz round size, the detail is lacking and it looks like one of those oversized novelty coins. Look at the Grand Canyon and Yosemite coins; that is not enough detail for a 3 inch diameter coin. And then the normal quarter obverse, on a coin this size it's just ridiculous looking. I think they should have made these in 1 oz rounds; the detail and size would better fit something along the lines of a SAE.

I read in Numismatic News that tons of these coins are coming back graded as MS-66 through 68 because on such large strikes as these coins it is much harder to get that perfect strike. So an MS-69 set could be worth some money. The article mentioned that if someone is able to put together an MS-70 set of these that it could be worth tens of thousands of dollars, but of course it would have to be a reputable coin grader, not a fly-by-night company.

And yes, I do believe those are fat man pants in the middle of the coin. ;D

America the Beautiful set price tumbles
America the Beautiful 5-ounce silver coin sets are now dropping in price. Coast to Coast Coins and Currency dropped its retail price from $2,395 to $1,695 in a week, a decline of 29 percent, according to the firm’s latest advertisement in Numismatic News.

Sure, the sets are not graded MS-69 or MS-70, but greater availability now seems to be the name of the game.

I had a telephone call yesterday from a reader in Omak, Wash.

He had placed an order for one of the sets from an Authorized Purchaser when he saw a story in Numismatic News about the mob of people who lined up outside of The Gold Center in Springfield, Ill., Jan. 3 to buy the sets that firm was offering.

He told me he really did not expect to be successful in his quest but he got the all-important telephone call from his chosen Authorized Purchaser on Feb. 9 telling him one was reserved for him and to send his check.

He did. Now he is on pins and needles just waiting for the arrival of the coins and he decided to share his excitement with me.

How low will prices go? Coin Market editor Harry Miller warned in the first issue of Numismatic News with a 2011 date that these sets should not be chased. That looks like a smart call today.

Some good info on the grading of these coins... A Must read for collectors
------
By Louis Golino on February 16th, 2011
Those who purchased their America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coin sets from A-Mark received them in PCGS first strike holders labeled as “Choice BU.” There is a great deal of confusion regarding what the designation, Choice BU, actually means. Many people, including presumably many of those who are flipping their sets on e-Bay for prices that are now approximately $1600 for the 5 coin set, believe that those coins are not high grade.

One dealer sent me an e-mail offer for graded sets that are marked “Gem BU,” and said he is not selling any PCGS sets marked “Choice BU.” He explained that the sets marked “Gem BU” were considered for numerical grades but graded below 69, while those marked “Choice BU” were not considered for numerical grades. Unfortunately, he is only correct about the second point.

Last week I contacted PCGS President Don Willis who told me that both the “Choice BU” and “Gem BU” sets have not been considered for numerical grades. This means, in my view, that some people who are selling their sets may not be aware that if they re-submit them to PCGS, or send them to another company like NGC, some or all of their coins may well be high grade and potentially much more valuable than they realize.

As always with coin collecting, especially modern U.S. coin collecting, having accurate and timely information makes all the difference. This is especially the case if you consider another critical point. Some of the 5 ounce coins were made with very reflective, mirrored finishes that are receiving designations of prooflike (PL) or deep prooflike (DPL). I have seen some of these coins and to me, it is clear that several of them have those PL surfaces, especially some of the Yosemite, Yellowstone and Mount Hood coins, whereas most have more matte finishes.

But again, many collectors may not realize that only NGC has given those coins PL and DPL designations if they merit them. I asked Mr. Willis of PCGS about this, and he said he was not aware of any coins slabbed by his service with those designations, but he did not rule it out completely, saying we would have to see what happens in the future. I also asked if he knew when PCGS would start making population numbers available so collectors and investors can start to get a sense of how many coins have received MS69, MS68, etc. He said he did not know when that information would be available.

On February 14, I contacted a representative at NGC who said she believed the initial census numbers would be made available on the NGC web site by the end of the week, but she could not be certain. In order to have access to the NGC census one needs at least a basic membership, and to access the PCGS population report one also needs to be a paid member.

Update on 2011 5oz America the Beautiful coin series

Preliminary Details on 2011 America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins
By Michael Zielinski on March 9th, 2011
---
These coins contain five ounces of .999 fine silver, have a diameter of 3 inches, and carry the same designs as the circulating America the Beautiful Quarters. The releases of the series for 2011 will feature Gettysburg National Military Park, Glacier National Park, Olympic National Park, Vicksburg National Military Park, and Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The obverse of each coin carries a portrait of George Washington.
---
Due to the extremely low mintages for the 2010-dated America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins, the AP’s were required to agree to a set of terms and conditions to distribute the coins. This included a requirement to sell all coins directly to the public, impose an ordering limit of one per household, and limit premiums to 10% above acquisition cost. These terms were set by the Mint in response to complaints about unreasonable premiums charged by the distributors.
---
According to the US Mint, the mintage levels for the 2011-dated releases will be “substantially higher” than the levels for the prior year. As such, there will be no terms and conditions imposed. However, in order to participate in this year’s release, AP’s must certify that they have sold all of their 2010-dated coins in compliance with the terms and conditions for those coins. At this time, there are several AP’s who have not fully distributed their 2010 coins.

Latest Developments on the 2010 and 2011 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins
By Louis Golino on April 25th, 2011

With this week’s planned release of the first numismatic version of the 2010 America the Beautiful (ATB) five ounce silver coins and the start of sales to Mint distributors of the first 2011 bullion coins, now is a good time to review the latest developments within the series.

A U.S. Mint press release indicated that the price for the Hot Springs numismatic version of the 5 ounce ATB coins would be $279.95. The numismatic versions have a “P” mintmark for Philadelphia, an uncirculated finish, and come in a protective capsule and presentation box with a certificate of authenticity. The coin is widely expected to sell out very quickly, perhaps within hours of the start of sales on April 28 at 12:00 Noon ET. The Mint has imposed a one coin per household limit, and will sell the coins through its 800 number (1-800-USA-MINT) and web site (http://www.usmint.gov).

The mintage for the 2010 numismatic coins will be limited to 27,000 for each of the five designs, while mintages for the 2011 numismatic versions have not been announced. Release dates have also not been announced for these coins other than the Hot Springs issue...

Now that the 2010 bullion coins can only be obtained on the secondary market, and silver continues to push towards $50 an ounce, I think prices will be increasing. In addition, as attention shifts to the 2011 bullion coins, collectors and investors may begin to focus more on the scarcity of the 2010 coins, which have a mintage about one-quarter of that of the anticipated 2011 mintages (33,000 for the 2010 coins vs. 126,500 as of now for 2011 coins). However, it is not clear how the distribution of the 2010 numismatic versions will affect prices for the 2010 bullion coins. Since the mintages are so close (27,000 vs. 33,000 of each design), and both will be among the lowest mintage modern silver coins, I do not think the release of the 2010 numismatic coins will lower prices for the 2010 bullion coins.

Collecting America the Beautiful 5 Ounce Silver Coins: Numismatic vs. Bullion Versions
May 5, 2011 By Louis Golino

Late last year the U.S. Mint announced that the mintages of the 2010 bullion versions of the five ounce America the Beautiful (ATB) silver coins would be limited to 33,000 of each issue, which is an extremely low number for a bullion coin. Since then the modern coin market and hobby have to a large extent been dominated by the ATB silver coins. As with collecting any series of coins, there are advantages and disadvantages to collecting the ATB coins, and in this case, to collecting one version (bullion or numismatic) over another.

As a result of the U.S. Congress’ decision to create yet another multi-year precious metal-based series with the ATB coins, collectors’ budgets are being strained more than ever. This is partly because silver has risen dramatically in the past year, even taking into account its almost 30% drop in the past week after almost surpassing its 1980 nominal high of $50 an ounce. It is also a result of the proliferation of U.S. Mint coin products and series in recent years. If a collector has any intention of completing a series, he or she needs to decide which series best fits their needs, or which is most feasible for them to collect.

Although I was skeptical of these coins when they were first proposed, as were many, I became intrigued by the ATB coins for several reasons. The first is the unusually low 2010 mintages, but the coins are also quite compelling for other reasons. They are the first five ounce coins the U.S. has ever issued, and the national parks images they depict are very attractive. Every collector has a favorite, perhaps Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, or Glacier Park, and it is hard to deny that the large format of the coins depicts the beauty and majesty of the parks in a way the ATB quarters can not.

The ATB coins, as I have argued before, are a good way to add to one’s silver portfolio, especially if purchased below melt value, which was possible in some instances. The bullion versions, in particular, were intended as an alternative to the American Silver Eagle series (ASE). Because the 2010 bullion coins had such a limited mintage, authorized purchasers (AP’s) saw them as numismatic coins and initially priced them accordingly. But the bullion coins are supposed to carry about the same premium over silver content as ASE’s. The 2011 coins, of which the first two issues were just released (for Gettysburg National Military Park and Glacier National Park), are being sold by AP’s and other large bullion and numismatic companies at much more competitive prices than the 2010 coins were initially priced.

The recent drop in silver prices resulted in prices for the Gettysburg and Glacier National Park coins of approximately $220-230 per coin based on silver at roughly $37 per ounce. The premium over silver per ounce works out to about $7, which is only $1 more per ounce than ASE’s currently sell for. The bullion ATB’s have certain obvious advantages over ASE’s. They have changing designs with five new issues per year, they are unique and attractive as discussed above, and their mintages will pale in comparison to ASE’s, which are made in the tens of millions. The 2011 coins have mintages of roughly four times the 2010 coins, and possibly more if warranted by increased demand, but the 2011 issues are still low mintage bullion coins. It is unclear if future mintages will be increased, as a result of greater demand, or if they will be decreased because buyers are deterred by higher silver prices or sheer exhaustion...

...The numismatic versions of the ATB coins have their own pros and cons. The obvious advantage of the numismatic versions is that they will be scarcer. Fewer will be issued than their bullion counterparts, although so far we only know the 2010 coins will have a mintage limited to 27,000. We do not yet know how many 2011 numismatic coins will be made...

My Hot Springs ATB Numismatic coin arrived...
Here is a pic of it next to the Bullion coin. The Bullion seems to be of a much higher quality stamping, with shiny surfaces (looks poor in the slab). The Numismatic version has a sandblasted (aluminum) look to it. The SAE is there for size comparison.
Enjoy,
Ximmy

The United States Mint has provided details for the next America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coin numismatic release. The latest issue will feature Yellowstone National Park.

Sales will officially begin on May 17, 2011 at 12:00 Noon ET. The coins will be priced at $279.95 and have a maximum mintage of 27,000. There will be an ordering limit of one per household in place for at least the first seven days of sales. The US Mint cautions that pricing is subject to change based precious metals pricing.

The same pricing, maximum mintage, and ordering limits were in place for the first numismatic release featuring Hot Springs National Park. When sales began on April 28, 2011, initial demand was so great that it took down the US Mint’s website for 45 minutes. After nine hours of sales, customers had ordered more than 19,000 of the coins.

The numismatic versions for the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins feature an uncirculated finish and carry the “P” mint mark. The coins are sold directly by the United States Mint. The bullion versions of the coin, which were first made available late last year, feature a different finish, lack the mint mark, and are distributed through the US Mint’s network of authorized purchasers.

That's a hoot. It's all bullion, people. Some of it is more rare and therefore more collectable but it does not classify it as numismatic. When they circulate them as currency then it can have that title.

Good question...

There are markings on the edge of the coin.

There is an insert in the box that contains specifications too:

Condition: Uncirculated
Mint: Philadelphia
Mint Mark: P
Composition: 99.9% silver 0.01% copper
Content: 0.999 Fine Silver (155.362) grams
Weight: 5.0 troy ounces
Diameter: 3.0 inches
Thickness: 0.16 inches
Edge: Lettered

etc. ;D

I dont care about the insert, that can be lost/misplaced/faked.

As long as it is physically on the coin then that is what matters to me. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a few of these just because I think they're neat looking (from pictures...I haven't physically seen one)

Here are 2 Gettysburg coins that just arrived. I am not happy with the quality of these. There appear to be machine marks & scratches, the surface finish is inconsistent, especially around the edges. I feel like I bought remainders or seconds. If this type of quality is to be expected I will certainly not collect the entire series. >:(

Ximmy, I got my Glacier ATB coin today. I noticed the finish on the obverse to be inconsistent as well. The reverse of the coin the finish is consistent but seems almost too proof-like. It's very detailed, but too damn shiney, it's hard on the eyes, hard to enjoy.

Maybe our coins were minted on a Monday after a weekend of binge drinking.

Overall, not impressed. But it's a big coin, nice chunk of silver, so I'm still satisfied. I doubt I'll order any more of them though.

“We penciled in right now 45,000 per release,” said U.S. Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson in a recent telephone interview.

And the mintage for the numismatic version of the coins will drop from 35,000 for 2011-dated coins to 25,000 for 2012 pieces.

Great Basin National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

Waiting for price drop... hehee...

The full statement from the US Mint is as follows:

Due to the recent decrease in the price of silver, the United States Mint is considering lowering prices on several silver coin products. As a result, we have postponed the launch of the 2013 America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin for Great Basin National Park that was scheduled to go on sale June 27. The new prices will go into effect after being published in the Federal Register and after a new on-sale date has been determined.
While the pricing decrease is being considered, collectors may want to hold off on purchasing the currently available America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins, which are priced at $179.95, and products containing numismatic versions of the American Silver Eagle.
Based on previous actions, if prices are lowered for these products, it may be for around $5 per ounce of silver content.

How the Philadelphia Mint Makes ATB 5 Oz Silver Coins

by Darrin Lee Unser (http://www.coinnews.net/author/darrinluaolcom/) on September 27, 2013 · 3 comments (http://www.coinnews.net/2013/09/27/how-the-philadelphia-mint-makes-atb-5-oz-silver-coins/#comments)

This sixth article about our visit to the U.S. Mint at Philadelphia includes photos and videos showing how America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins are made.
Half of the nation’s coins for circulation are made at the United States Mint facility in Philadelphia, but it also makes products for investors and collectors like the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins.
I was captivated by how the three-inch coins are produced from a single multi-stroke press. It operates so much differently than the Philadelphia Mint’s more than 60 presses that make circulating coins (http://www.coinnews.net/2013/09/20/how-the-philadelphia-mint-makes-coins-for-circulation/). Enter the impressive German-made Grabener 1000 press, capable of striking 40 coins a minute with up to 1000 tons of pressure.

Yeah I love those ATBs for the same reason that I like the '70's silver art bars. I prefer the bullion version over the "P" version because of the premium (usually around $100 for a bullion version vs. $150 for a "P" when just released). However, I will keep an eye out for "P" pucks that are selling for a discount. I bought 4 "P" pucks and I paid between $120 to $130 each for them which is decent considering that those usually sell for well over $150 on ebay and the main online dealers.

Ximmy,

I did see what some of those Hawaii puck went for on ebay and it blew my mind. To be honest with you, I am glad that I picked up this ATB addiction when spot being under $20 vs getting the ATB addiction when spot was in the $40 range. Hopefully one day I can snag a volcano puck for a cheap price (under $200) but I will not hold my breath for that to happen.

The following ATB bullion puck is the most recent one that I bought for $100.00 from a LCS. I "pre-ordered" it from this LCS on June 22 to lock in the price and I picked it up on July 1 once the dealer got it in. It is the ATB Blue Ridge Parkway bullion puck which is the 3rd ATB that was released for 2015. Here is what mine looks like............

Sweet! I ordered these coins too but they have not arrived yet.

I like this Blue Ridge Parkway Puck very much. The LCS that I bought my Blue Ridge Parkway from had 100 in stock. When I came back 2 days later to see what else he had, he said that he had 7 left. Apparently these are still in high demand. The $100 price might have had a lot to do with that. I think that the collector version will go on sale tomorrow for $149.95 on the U.S Mint website but I do not plan to buy the collector version.

I decided not to buy the Numismatic version since I already have two bullion Blue Ridge Parkway pucks. Generally speaking (and with some exceptions), the Numismatic version will have a lower mintage than the bullion ones will. With that said both versions of the ATB pucks have, relatively speaking, much lower mintages than, for example, silver eagles (which have mintages in the millions per mint year.

Yesterday, I bought a set of 5 2010 ATB bullion pucks from a coin shop for a total price of $656.75 ($131.35 per 5-oz puck). There are in PCGS slabs (PCGS First Strike "PCGS Choice BU"). I also bought a 2013 McHenry bullion puck for $107.31 from the same coin shop that I bought the 2010 pucks from. A total of 6 ATB bullion pucks purchased yesterday (30 troy oz's silver total). It was a decent day yesterday for me in terms of ATB purchases. I am happy with those purchases.

I changed my mind and ended up buying the Numismatic version of the Blue Ridge Parkway 5-oz silver puck. I bought it last week from a LCS for $147.00. I could not resist. I feel that this puck is, by far, the best design for 2015.
