25% of Kids and Teens in the U.S. Take Prescriptions on a Regular Basis

More than a quarter of U.S. kids and teens are taking a medication on a chronic basis, according to Medco Health Solutions Inc., the biggest U.S. pharmacy-benefit manager with around 65 million members. Nearly 7% are on two or more such drugs, based on the company's database figures for 2009.

Doctors and parents warn that prescribing medications to children can be problematic. There is limited research available about many drugs' effects in kids. And health-care providers and families need to be vigilant to assess the medicines' impact, both intended and not. Although the effects of some medications, like cholesterol-lowering statins, have been extensively researched in adults, the consequences of using such drugs for the bulk of a patient's lifespan are little understood.

Many medications kids take on a regular basis are well known, including treatments for asthma and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

But children and teens are also taking a wide variety of other medications once considered only to be for adults, from statins to diabetes pills and sleep drugs, according to figures provided to The Wall Street Journal by IMS Health, a research firm. Prescriptions for antihypertensives in people age 19 and younger could hit 5.5 million this year if the trend though September continues, according to IMS. That would be up 17% from 2007, the earliest year available.

Researchers attribute the wide usage in part to doctors and parents becoming more aware of drugs as an option for kids. Unhealthy diets and lack of exercise among children, which lead to too much weight gain and obesity, also fuel the use of some treatments, such as those for hypertension. And some conditions are likely caught and treated earlier as screening and diagnosis efforts improve.

In the old days you created a drug to target a specific known disease, now a days you create a drug and then create a disease to use it on.

That is just sad, and you can't blame the kids. Although some medications are necessary, many are probably for a.d.d. or similar. Parents who fill those prescriptions should think twice about what they are giving their child...

My X put my son on that for a few months before I forced her to stop... changed his personality permanently and not for the better.

I've said it for years, we are a pill-dependent society. People feel the need to just dig up stuff on the internet and diagnose themselves with whatever they find. Then they seek out a drug to help with it. Most the problems that people take medicine for can most likely be alleviated without the meds. Change in diet, activities, or just taking vitamins maybe.

What happened to just letting a kid run their energy out besides? Hyperactivity? It makes me think of how I have to take my dog out to get her "zoomies" on. Burn some of the energy!! Or maybe put the kid in sports or get them into a hobby of some sort. You have to stimulate their minds or they will most definitely get bored!

Look at the drug adds on TV the last several years
Half the time they don't even tell you what it is suppose to treat and just end the commercial with a statement to ask your doctor if it's for you, they certainly aren't advertising to the doctors sitting in front of the boob tube, they are only trying to fool the public into thinking they need treatment.

The key words here are "25% on presciption".........and out of the other 75% how many more are doing it?

Like I keep saying........"If the future of America lies in the hands of our childrens we are then in deep trouble"..........remember that now more kids smoke more grass than regular cigarretes.

Nephew is on his "focus pill" he is a good kid but walks around, barely eats any food, almost never engages in physical activity... the mom is one of those formerly fat women who are vehemently anti-meat ... kid is 13, his knee is thicker than his leg above the knee ... feel sorry for him, have spoken to my brother about it ... but he too takes a "focus pill" and claims it is better for him...
