View Full Version : My first ever "bad can".

I think it was christmas eve. I had been dropped off at home after being at a get-together (aka yearly drinking binge) and came in with a craving for water, and canned salmon. I have no idea why, but I was dying for a can of salmon.

The only place I keep such a thing is in my preps as I don't normally eat canned food at all. I went and got a can with a 2012 expiry. A totally fine looking can when I bought it and probably a totally fine looking can now. So I took the can opener and punctured it. I didn't hear the hiss. Now, I was drunk as hell, so I thought maybe I just missed it. I poured off the extra liquid and dumped the salmon on a plate and chucked it in the microwave. I didn't think it smelled wrong, but again I was pretty drunk and very hungry. A short while later it was warmed up and I stuck my fork in a part from the middle and tasted it. It was very dry and lacked flavor. Remembering the lack of a hiss, I spat it out, threw it all out and got another can.

With the new can, I noticed the liquid was clear, whereas the first can had been an orange color. This one hissed, as well. It had a much better smell. It was moist and tasty once I dug in (so much so that I ate three more cans that night!...) Same brand, same product. I believe the first can was bad. I know there's some fairly high risks in eating food from unsealed cans.

So I'm just throwing this out there... be careful with your preps. I can guarantee that can looked perfect when I bought it (or I wouldn't have bought it... I'm picky), but I think it was a real risk when I went to eat it. You gotta listen for the hissing sound of a can being punctured. It's no good being sick or dying when you're trying to survive!

Ash, I wanted to refer you to a thread Imacannin started about canned salmon. But I couldn't find it.

So I looked at the member list & she is no longer here. I guess she pulled another disappearing act.

Anyway, thanks for your report & glad you followed your instincts. Do you recall the brand/store you bought them from?

Nah...you would KNOW it instantly. A year ago I bought 144 cans of canned chicken that have the easy-open pull-ring top. Even when loading the cases at Wal-Mart off the pallet there was a very strong evil stench coming from somewhere. From five feet away it stank. When I got home I discovered that three cans in the middle case had slightly ruptured at the easy-open pull-ring top. I just followed my nose to those three cans. There was also an ugly obvious blackish mold growing around these three leaking lids. I also discarded the other cans that were immediately touching these three leaking cans and Windexed the others.

What you describe does not come close to the real thing.

I think the brand was goldseal? It seems I have none of them left to check the label, but goldseal comes to mind. I don't know where I got it, I pick up a lot of canned food from different places. I don't really blame the company or the store, since there was no way to tell... I mean a customer could have wrecked the can somehow, and all the other cans were delicious.

Yeah that's way worse than what I had. The salmon actually looked fine - until I compared it to salmon that was fine. The off smell and orange liquid stood out. Maybe mine was just in the early stages of turning disgusting. It had no easy pull top and I'm a bit confused on how it actually could have lost pressure because I'm sure it looked fine.

From now on I'm totally listening for the hiss!
