while on the surface, it may seem that a strong canadian dollar is a good thing, it seems that our canadian economy was in better shape when our dollar was worth about $.75 USD...in my area there are many fishing resorts (for example)that used to thrive on a large american clientele. when our dollar was at par with the US, there was a serious absence of americans at the resorts. add to that the soaring fuel prices, and there ya go...now with the increased hassle of crossing the border and flying, american tourism in canada is taking a serious hit it may not recover from.

although, i remember about 2 years ago (roughly) the canadian dollar took a jump past the US$ briefly...a friend of mine took $100,000CDN and bought US$. he then sat on it for a couple of weeks and when things settled back down, he switched it all back to CDN$ and made $18,000 profit.

maybe for some it can be a good thing, but not for everyone...

I invested 3500 usd into a canadian cd paying 10% around 13 years ago for my son. the term was 5yrs, has rolled twice now, he will cash it out next time it is due . cdn was about .65 at the time of initial deposit. sometimes ya get lucky. Canadian money at least has a resource based economy in it's favor.
