Guys,

Some of you may know this. Is there a mobile phone out there without GPS and that doesn't report to a tower all the time?

Let's call it a "freedom phone".

I want a phone that I can set to when or how often it calls a tower. Say, every 20 minutes during my off hours. Or I check it myself. No GPS. Screw the grid.

Maybe one of the no frills phones so far on the gps. But every time you turn on your phone it will report it is on and the com between tower and your phone will continue until you turn it off. They will talk to each other, even if you are not!

Right. All the cell phone companies moved away from that "obsolete technology" by 2006. All the older cell phones that don't do GPS no longer work on the current system.

If my 5 y.o. Nokia 6010 is on and near my computer, tv, or car radio I will note TVI/RFI whenever it's checking in with the tower every 20 minutes or so even though it's remained stationary. You can a bet that every single time it 'checks in' the GPS coordinates are logged.

Yeah it's called a satellite phone. They are more expensive, but are coming down in price.

Take a technological step backwards and go for a good set of Midland 2 way radios. Not only will you be off the grid, but you will still be communicating when TSHTF.

You could also just turn your phone off and only turn it on when you need it.

SJS, this Nokia 1100 is interesting stuff. There's a bunch of RH-16, RH-17, RH-18 phones that are going for $500-1000 dollars. What's up with that?

just wrap it in tin foil or make yourself a tinfoil pouch to keep it in...no signal can get out OR get in

Vacuum?.......no good, still sending the signal......even if you were to take the battery out the emergency battery that keeps all your numbers on the phone would still be sending the signal.......... buy a bunch of throw away phone and be sure pay with cash and don't give any personal ID.

There are certain versions of the 1100 that can be re-programmed to override security info, so the ones that are very expensive are the ones that have this hardware bug that allows the re-programming. Basically it lets you do interception of banking messages (many people use their phone for mobile banking). Only ones made at a certain factory have this hardware (and thus non-fixable) security hole.

Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian crime syndicates use this vulnerability to commit banking theft, since the phone can be programmed to impersonate another phone.
