browsing through completed ebay auctions i've noticed that this coin isnt commanding near the premium it once did

sales for this coin have been averaging about $48 +s/h while the "common date" sae's are finishing right about $38 +s/h

The 1996 is the lowest mintage in the whole SAE series, with a reported 3,603,386 coins minted. So they are rare, but as with all numismatic precious metal coins, when spot value rises, much of that numis value buffers the rise. We saw the same thing in pre-33 gold when gold took off from $800 up.
