Chengdu J-20 China’s first stealth fighter takes to the skies.

by Pratik Sawerdekar on December 30th, 2010Share29

The latest buzz on Internet is that the China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group is preparing to test its first stealth aircraft known to world as the J-XX.

According to enthusiasts living nearby, the aircraft has already done taxi run and top level officials are coming to the facility to witness the first flight. This comes as a surprise as both American and Russian think tanks had written off China. J-XX is Chinese competitor in the Fifth Generation race.

It is stated to have very low observability, advance avionics and radar coupled with two Turbofan engines generating 180 kN of thrust.

The exact happenings are still uncertain but the images leaked on the internet are extremely convincing. The aircraft seems to be around 60-70 feet long with forward canards and delta wing configuration similar to the J-10. On first look the aircraft looks very similar to the American F-22. However, it has features such twin DSI inlets and V-shaped tail.

The aircraft seems to be fitted with WS-10 engines rather than WS-15 but this cannot be confirmed. According Janes there are two prototype airframes in existence of which one is flight ready.

Exact happenings are still unknown in the formal media as the Chinese Govt is tight lipped on it. If indeed this aircraft is flight ready than this could have serious implication to surrounding countries which are yet to have such an aircraft.

The first high-resolution photographs appeared on Chinese non-governmental websites of a prototype of the Chengdu J-20 fighter being built for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) The J-20 appears to be conducting a high-speed taxi test.

The latest images show some startling similarities between the Chinese J-XX and canceled Russian MiG-1.44. Both have similar style of delta wing canard configurations and V-Shaped tail section with closely mounted engines. The frontal aspect looks extremely similar to that of the American F-35 JSF with DSI intake which has now become common on all new Chinese designs.

Finally we cannot comments on this latest development in detail since there are no images of the cockpit hence we just don’t yet know how advance the aircraft is. It could be a half baked cake with good icing or China is indeed very advance. Building a stealth airframe is easy thing for moderately advance countries but what matters is remaining stuff like engine, avionics, radar and sensors and other sub-system which China hasn’t developed to advance stage. It’s time to wait and watch and for HAL to get going !

Have you got evidence of that? I don't know why they would need to do that when we give China our technology.

The obvious betrayal of a nation's hard earned secrets, technology and means is enough to outrage any alert populace. Nurturing baby dragons that will grow up to be hungry and proud people-eating mature dragons is just about as stupid as you can be. Who would raise up baby vipers to live in their own homes?

the Chinese have surpassed the Americans in civilian manufacturing technology, many years ago.

there is a huge amount of fraud that goes into the manufacturing, design, and marketing of American military technology. some of that results in Qui Tam (Whistleblower) lawsuits, most of the time that behavior is rewarded inside the management structure of American defense contractors.

in the 3 categories - propulsion, avionics, and advanced composites, China has the industrial muscle to compete with the US.

the fraud in American defense industry often results in advanced fighter planes with significant operational defects.

to beat America, China merely needs to cultivate a culture that rewards honesty among the engineering staff.

in the 4th category - firepower ... well, the US has more recent operational experience, which counts for a lot. i.e. the US has fired more rounds, having been at war for the last 8 years, which gives them a chance to test out their systems live.

the reputation China has for making cheap stuff is mostly because they are the low-cost producer. in order to be the low-cost producer, you often have to skimp on materials.

my guess is, China probably gives their aerospace engineers a bigger budget than for materials than in the ultra-competitive consumer electronics (Foxconn) manufacturing space.

A friend of Agnut and mine is going to China on the fifth to teach them how to make some kind of electronic stuff........I really don't know what is it for.

My father, an aerospace engineer, spent many years teaching the Chinese. It was his job and he was paid to do it. They were apt students. I don't know any of the specifics. He said they were very respectfull.

I guess I would be too, if someone gave me their knowledge. We've been sold down the river.

The PLA is upgrading its war machine daily. If you look at the recent parades and combat exercises it becomes evident they are preparing and focusing a great deal of the budget toward modern militarization.

The question is.. what are they planning to do with the new toys?

Very simple Magnet........first they will use their boats all over the world and little by litte they will do more when we do nothing.

By the way, so many kids want now to joing the army that there is a waiting list........overseas factories making equipment for the US armed forces are now working overtime.........the US are now sending more war material to our warehouses in the state of Isreal, but of course in case of an emergency "they" will be able to use it >:(

Chinese do more academic research, get more patents, and graduate more engineers than anyone else.... No doubt they could build a jet fighter.

Vacuum?..........how about 2.5 MILLIONS engineers a year?

Are you saying there is a waiting list to get into the US army? Where did you get the info? Wasn't it just recently they had the 'stop loss' going on?
