I wasn't paying attention and I tried to plug my new laptop's AC adapter into my old one. The ports have totally different shapes, but I didn't notice this until when I tried to plug in the female end into the PC, and it made a small spark.
Acting further idiotically (I blame my non-caffeinated brain), I plugged the adapter into my new PC, and was surfing away on the Internet until I got a warning that my battery life was at 17%. I also noticed that the power light thingie was red instead of the usual green.
Does this mean that I need to get a new adapter?! Grrrrr.

In one word "Probably" ;D , find someone with a volt meter, and check the output of the cord!
Most a/c adapters, have a fuse, that will blow, the problem, is getting to it. Because it is a sealed unit.
Just hope and pray, you did not mess up the laptop internal power supply!

Yup - yer smoked - hopefully it is only the PS and not the laptop.
I smoked my router last month when I plugged in the modem lead (12v) into the router (5v).
(I now have labels on the plugs!)

Thank you Dogman! My dh probably has one somewhere in the garage, but he is at work. I was even thinking of just going to Fry's and replacing it! But I should just wait.
The computer seemed to be working fine...could it still have something wrong?
JM, I probably need to use labels too!

Lapis, not to change the subject, but what does dh stand for? I keep seeing women using dh for what I presume to mean husband, but I really don't know.
It might mean damn hassle, or dumb helper, or douche handle, or any number of things...... ??? Just curious. ;D
Many of these newfangled abbreviations totally stump me.

DH stands for dear husband. Sometimes people use the more politically-correct DP, which stands for dear partner (and usable for same-sex marriages).
