Laid-off Gary firefighter panhandles for money (http://tickerforum.org/akcs-www?post=176442)

GARY, Ind. — A furloughed Gary firefighter has turned to panhandling to support his family.

Jason Pickering is one of 34 firefighters the city laid off last week. The 34-year-old married father of four has been wearing his turnout gear while he solicits donations from passersby holding a cardboard sign reads: “Laid off Gary firefighter. Family of six. Thank you and God bless.”

In his other hand he holds a boot to collect donations.

“I was at 31st and Grant and got $400 in four hours,” the Valparaiso resident told The Times of Munster for a story today. “People were really generous, giving 20s and stuff.”

Pickering said he’s panhandling in part to protest the layoffs and raise awareness about them.

However, he said his financial need is real. His wife does not work, staying home with their four daughters ranging in age from 2 to 10.

“Unemployment only pays $350 a week,” he said. “I’ve got a house, car payment, mortgage payment, just like everyone else.”

The city delivered the layoff notices Dec. 27, saying they will save the city about $1.2 million.

City officials said they expect the state’s Distressed Unit Appeals Board to find the budget cuts necessary. The board granted the city $21 million in relief from property tax caps in each of the past two years, but the city’s tax revenue has been cut in half since the tax caps were instituted. The bankruptcy of the Majestic Star Casino also has cost the city tax revenue.

The explanations are little relief to Pickering, who doesn’t know where to find work in his chosen profession. The only department hiring anywhere in the state, he said, is in Fort Wayne.

“We just want to come back to work,” Pickering said of the furloughed firefighters. “We took an oath to help people.”

Feel sorry for the guy who leveraged himself to the hilt. :oo-->

I wonder how much he is cutting into the regular panhandlers take?

He better be careful. The .Gov won't care if you have a family of 6 to feed. They'll demand the unemployment "money" back.

here in my town, there was actually a panhandling "group" that was operated by one guy...he would drop off panhandlers at the canadian tire store, walmart, the beer stores, etc., then would come and check up on them and collect the money (kinda like a pimp), give them a sandwich, and a few smokes, then set them back to work...not sure what % he was giving them, but i knew it was for real when i saw him "collecting" from one of his "agents", and sending her back to work her spot....

i feel for this firefighter, but where i live, i don't give change to panhandlers...especially when they're wearing new DC shoes, $180 jeans, and a $50 ball cap.

i am a charitable person, but i prefer to help in other ways...buy them a coffee, or a burger...but no $$.

best of luck to this firefighter, i wish him well...

2 bits bet that says he'll be fined/& or arrested for using municipal 'property' (his uniform)

AND have to claim that income to unemployment.

I didn't catch it the first read.
He is panhandling in Gary where he worked, but lives in Valpraiso. How much does he spend in fuel?

Mish Shedlock has an interesting take on this story. He has been pointing the finger at public employee unions for a while now.

Jason says he will continue begging and protesting the layoffs.

Hello Jason. The city did not put you on the curb. The union did. Gary is broke. And now so are you. And the reason why Gary is broke is the same reason why you are broke. That reason Jason, is the union. The union refused to take pay or benefit cuts to save your job. That is why you are on the curb.

You see Jason, the union does not give a rat's ass about you. All the union cares about is preserving the pay and benefits of senior members.

Jason, if you want to protest, I suggest you stand outside your former headquarters and ask every firefighter going into the building why they voted to put you on the curb.

Then again, Jason, how did you vote on those wage and benefit cuts the city needed? If you voted no, the harsh reality is you helped put yourself on the street.

By the way Jason, unemployment benefits are taxable. Now that you are panhandling, how does it feel to have taxes collected out of your small check to pay monstrous benefits to the remaining union members who tossed you on the curb?

Think about that Jason while you are whining about your lost job begging everyone else who has been in your situation for years, paying taxes so that you accrued benefits they will never see.

And to throw another bone of contention in.

FD's have now become an extension of Police Departments and the Nanny State at large

They can breakdown your door.......once broken other state angencies can lawfully enter behind.

They're also encoraged to report weapons or "excessive" hoarding of assets.

There're very quick to hand out a fine for something bogus.

Eff em........
