A woman shot and killed an intruder and police caught a suspected accomplice in a Northwest Side home invasion Thursday afternoon.

The gunfire shattered the afternoon calm in the neighborhood of large, high-end houses on wide, tree-lined streets.

The woman was upstairs with her husband in their home in the 7100 block of Oakridge Drive when they heard a loud bang, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said.

They checked downstairs and found a man in his late teens or early 20s inside. He had broken a sliding glass door with a hammer, McManus said.

“What are you doing in my house?” the husband asked, while his wife grabbed a gun and fired one shot, killing the intruder.

Property records and neighbors identified the homeowners as Kathleen and John Carter, ages 64 and 82, respectively. Kathleen Carter is a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and a descendant of Collin McKinney, who was the last signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, according to a family friend.

Police officers working undercover were already in the area Thursday afternoon because of a rash of recent burglaries. Advised of the incident, they arrested a man blocks away from the shooting scene who they believe was the dead man's accomplice, McManus said. A vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects also was found in the area, police said.

Arriving police found the other suspect dead and the homeowners shaken but uninjured, McManus said.

Residents of the quiet neighborhood said they were shocked by the incident.

“They are very nice, quiet people,” Lisa Alden said of the Carters, her next-door neighbors. “We rarely see them. They keep to themselves, but they have three dogs that are always outside” in the fenced yard, she said.

Alden said the area has been increasingly targeted by burglars since her own home was broken into about 18 months ago.

“But still, this area is so quiet and the people so friendly, always waving when they walk the dogs, that it is truly shocking to have this happen in our neighborhood,” she said. “I feel horrible for (Carter) because it is terrible to have to shoot someone. ... She did the right thing, but I feel very badly for what she must be going through.”

McManus said the shooting appeared to be justified, and no charges were filed.

He said he doesn't know what burglars typically might be thinking when they break into a home, “but they should be thinking, ‘This could be the last home I break into.'”

It was the second homicide of the new year. Six slayings last year by civilians were ruled justified, most of them in response to home intruders.

“People who live in San Antonio are well aware of the law and have acted accordingly when people are in their homes,” McManus said.

Staff Writer Scott Huddleston contributed to this report.

While her husband is questioning, she's defending.

Good for her.

Two comments. First, the fact that she killed the guy in one shot is impressive. Second, if it was me, I would have double or triple-tapped him just to make sure.

You're not a woman though... she was thinking about how she'd have to clean up the mess after.

While I find it unfortunate that someone would be wasted so quickly, I also know that the burglary rate will go down in that neighborhood. I hate to think of how violent we can be toward offenders, but who knows what they might have done if the homeowner was not armed. I also recall when my van was broken into many years ago and my things were stolen. When that happened I could have strangled those scumdogs with my bare hands. (I should have known the Mexican guy in the white van was watching me for a ripoff... but I was a bit naive in those days.)

The breed coming in from Mexico is a savage lot these days.

Likewise....I'd never pull off one round, in fact I've consistently practiced to always pull off a 3 shot burst; 2 in the chest,1 in the head....remember this one? ...she's a hell of a lot more sympathetic than I'd be... :D

Don't mean to eb a woosie or anything, but wouldn't have been just as effective to call the police and let them haul him off instead of just killing him? I don't know the circumstances- perhaps he reached for something in a pocket or something.

If we are talking about the 1st story (not the video), the guy used a hammer to break the sliding glass patio door and was in the house...I assume with at least a hammer. The police were not there, so letting the police haul him off was not an option. Home invasions are not a casual matter, IMO.

Ok ,so when someone breaks into your home, call the police? Then what? Go hide, go make a drink for the criminal? I don't get your reasoning...... :conf:

same treatment would have been given if they had broken into my house.

Diagnosis: Acute case of lead poisoning

no question about it, there's nothing in my house worth risking your life for...and if you come in at me or mine....all bets are off...and I'll be going for the kill, and I'm not going to sit down and discuss what you're doing in my home...screw that shooting someone in the leg BS.....besides FL strengthened their "castle doctrine" laws, and basically speaking; you have a Right to be Safe in Your house or car or most anywhere else you are ...but home invasion? Forget it...I've never heard of a home invasion case where the victim was charged with Anything

Texas has also a very strong "castle" law. You break into my home, boom! No questions asked!

I'm kinda a die hard "kill em all and don't stop shooting til the mag is empty" kinda guy...but this doesn't look/sound like any home invasion...looks more like a dumbass who wasn't expecting anyone at home. I didn't read about finding any weapons and being 20ish and being taken out by a 64 and 82 yo is kinda weak. Musta been drunk or something...oh well...less leeching on society..all good.

i hate to see loss of life, but, the guy made his choice the moment he swung the hammer...and thereby accepted all consequences that go along with that decision...
