Mark Twain's masterpiece being sterilized!
This made me a little nauseas...

A Montgomery publisher and the AUM professor who edited out more than 200 uses of a racially derogatory term in a new edition of Mark Twain’s "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" say they’re not surprised that they’re coming under fire in some quarters.

"Probably a dozen years or so ago, I would have thought the same way," Alan Gribben, a professor of English at Auburn University Montgomery, said Tuesday night. "The author’s final text is sacrosanct and should never be altered."

But Gribben, who has studied and taught Twain for 40 years, changed his mind as he toured the state a few years ago reading to audiences from "Tom Sawyer" as part of the NEA’s Big Read program. He’d routinely replace the n-word -- used 219 times in "Huck Finn" and nine times in "Tom Sawyer," he said -- with the word "slave," which he has done in NewSouth Books’ new combined edition of the two works. In addition, the word "Injun" is replaced with Indian.

"We were very aware that we were doing something that was potentially very provocative and controversial," NewSouth publisher Suzanne La Rosa said. "We were very persuaded by Dr. Gribben’s point of view of what he called the amount of ‘preemptive censorship’ going on at the school level. It pained him personally to see ... the way that Twain’s novels were being de-listed from curricula across the nation. It became difficult for teachers to engage in discussion about the text when the kids were so uncomfortable, particularly with the n-word."

Gribben said that reaction has been fast and mostly furious since word came out about the new edition, which is at press right now and should be shipped in mid-February.

"I’ve gotten dozens and dozens of e-mails, most of them very critical of me," he said. "One thing that has amused me about it is that in the e-mails that take me to task for substituting the word ‘slave,’ not one of these hotly worded e-mails has mentioned the n-word. ... They won’t say the word, and they won’t write the word."

Taken to task

Gribben has gotten criticized roundly by fellow Twain scholars.

"The Mark Twain guild has brought pretty universal condemnation, but I hope they might soften their views once the book comes out and they read my introduction and my reasons," he said. "I’m not going to apologize for this. I want readers to have this as an option."

In the introduction to the new Twain edition, Gribben said he "gradually reached the conclusion that an epithet-free edition of Twain’s books is needed today."

[Read excerpt from Gribben's introduction.]

"Numerous communities currently ban ‘Huckleberry Finn’ as required reading in public schools," he wrote. "The American Library Association lists this novel as one of the most frequently challenged books across the nation."

An option

La Rosa says she doesn’t expect the NewSouth edition of Twain’s classics to replace others that are out there.

"There’s an abundance of other editions that are faithful to the original text," she said. "This is simply an option for teachers who would prefer to offer something else to students who find it difficult.

"What I’m hoping is that this book will be received well in the quarters where it will help the most," La Rosa added. "I’m not expecting it to be universally adopted by educators or academics."

But, she said, she knows the publication of the new edition will be controversial.

"We try to publish books that we feel have cultural content, and we’re not afraid to take chances with the literature we do publish," she said. "We are a pretty unafraid little house."

The new Twain edition won’t replace the other editions that have become iconic in literature, said Gribben, who has taught at AUM for 20 years, 19 of those as head of the English Department.

"It’s always going to be in print with the original wording, and I applaud that," he said. "I think I may have offered some teachers and some general readers an option for a more palatable reading experience."

How about we replace "UAM Professor Gribben" with "Politically Correct Leftist Fvcktard with no respect for historical literature"? ::)

This is total stupidity, it accomplishes nothing, blacks should be offended too,
even radicals.

Mark Twain is an incredible writer with incredible works, he had a lot to say as well,
very important stuff on freedom, even Jews, lol, Jews do not like Twain, this might
be used as a test case to see how people react before they go to everyone else.

This is scary if they move on to other works, they are becoming more blatant.
There is already a war on History and real knowledge that matters.

“Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being
run by smart people who are putting us on
or by imbeciles who really mean it.”
– Mark Twain –

In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned.
When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.
– Mark Twain –

Twain has a lot to say about Patriotism, many seemingly contradictory,
thinking through it all, critique, the process, is the education, like Plato.

Shit, get with the real adjenda and burn all the books that offend. Why fuck around with the editing pretense. Educated socialists always know what is best. How this book will offend anyone with an 80 IQ is beside the point, censorship is freedom!!! the Professor says so!!

Twain was Pro Jewish according to Jewish Virtual Library , pro Jewish.

Does Twain admire Jews or is he reporting on them ?

The ADL today destroys people that tell these truths.

Notice Rome is mentioned, I would love Twains source on this.

CONCERNING THE JEWS

by Mark Twain

Can fanaticism alone account for the persecution of the Jews? It is now my conviction that it is responsible for hardly any of it.

In this connection I call to mind Genesis, chapter 47. We have all read the story of the years of plenty and the years of famine in Egypt, and now Joseph with that opportunity, made a corner in broken hearts, and the crusts of the poor, and human liberty---a corner whereby he took away the nation's money to the last penny; took a nation's livestock all away, to the last hoof; took a nation's land all away, to the last acre. Then he took the nation itself, buying it for bread, man by man, woman by woman, child by child, till all were slaves; a corner which took everything, leaving nothing, a corner so stupendous that by comparison with it, the most gigantic corners in subsequent history are but baby things; for it dealt in hundreds of millions of bushels, and its profits were reckoned by the hundreds of millions of dollars. It was a disaster so crushing that its effects have not wholly disappeared from Egypt even today, more than 3,000 years after the event.

Was Joseph establishing a character for his race which survived long in Egypt, and in time would his name be familiarly used to express that character---like Shylock's? It was hardly to be doubted. Let us remember that this was centuries before the Crucifixion.

In the U. S. cotton states, after the war, the Jew came down in force, set up shop on the plantation, supplied all the negroes' wants on credit, and at the end of the season was the proprietor of the negro's share of the present crop and part of the next one. Before long the whites detested the Jew.

The Jew is being legislated out of Russia. The reason is not concealed. The movement was instituted because the Christian peasant stood no chance against his commercial abilities. The Jew was always ready to lend on a crop. When settlement day came, he owned the crop, and the next year he owned the farm, like Joseph.

In the England of John's time everybody got into debt to the Jew. He gathered all lucrative enterprises into his hands. He was the King of Commerce. he had to be banished from the realm. For like reasons, Spain had to banish him 400 years ago, and Austria a couple of centuries later.

In all ages, Christian Europe has been obliged to curtail his activities. If he entered upon a trade, the Christian had to retire from it. If he set up as a doctor, he took the business. If he exploited agriculture, the other farmers had to get at something else. The law had to step in to save the Christian from the poorhouse. Still, almost bereft of employments, he found ways to make money. Even to get rich. This history has a most sordid and practical look. Religious prejudices may account for one part of it, but not for the other nine.

Protestants have persecuted Catholics---but they did not take their livelihoods from them. Catholics have persecuted Protestants---but they never closed agriculture and the handicrafts against them. I feel convinced that the Crucifixion has not much to do with the world's attitude toward the Jew; the reasons for it are much older than that event...

I am convinced that the persecution of the Jew is not in any large degree due to religious prejudice. No, the Jew is a money-getter. He has made it the end and aim of his life. He was at it in Rome. He has been at it ever since. His success has made the whole human race his enemy.

You will say that the Jew is everywhere numerically feeble. When I read in the Encyclopedia Britannica that the Jewish population of the United States was 250,000, I wrote to the editor and explained to him that his figures were without doubt a misprint for 25,000,000. People told me that they had reason to suspect that for business reasons, many Jews did not report themselves as Jews. It looks plausible. I am strongly of the opinion that we have an immense Jewish population in America. I am assured by men competent to speak that the Jews are exceedingly active in politics....

I actually read about this days ago and I was so pissed and bummed, I think I must have felt like Twain would have himself and you have to believe that he's not only rolling over in his grave but fighting to get out of it and go kick somebody's ass. THE ONLY thing sadder is that the founders are right along side him.

Who is claiming that they are smarter than Mark Twain? The book doesn't have a point if you change it, it will become merely a bunch of stuff that happened to some people. It is not our job to 'fix' history. It is our job to let it lay and move on while learning - this is the opposite.

Some will claim that changing the word is a display of learning. I believe it is a display stating: it is okay to disparage all people, through the presentation of a non-truth as truth.

We sacrifice all to save some, but I feel that we don't even need to sacrifice some to save all. We just have to stop LYING. TO. OURSELVES.

Just let it lay, and move on.

Its true though, nobody ever writes the n-word, ever! I don't think there is a more sensitive word. He's probably telling the truth that none of the angry emails wrote the word out either.

He probably really is changing it because it makes kids so uncomfortable nowadays (more likely it makes him uncomfortable because he always has hypersensitive parents criticize him during his book-reading campaign).

Not that I'm condoning or agreeing with what he is doing, but he just strikes me as an old guy without much of a backbone who likes to each kids rather than a leftist political activist. Just the feeling I got from reading the article.

How hilarious considering that Twain wrote Huckleberry Finn to satirize racism back then in the United States.

And that guy has the audacity to declare himself to be an English professor? ::)

Yep, racism is sure to end when old books no longer say "nigger".

The forum actually censors it too. I wrote "n igger" and it saved "n-word".

Edit: maybe that's why n igger was never used in the emails that guy received... crappy email clients were search-and-replacing it.

Try calling your wife a C----.

Blacks have been swindled by scammers like Jessie Jackson and the Reverend Al to become apoplectic at the mere mention of the word. Why give your enemies that much power? This puts THEM in control of YOUR emotions. Moronic.

Call me ice-person, honky-white ass-cracker if you want, I'll just laugh. I AM a honky-white ass-cracker!

What a stupid thing to do - edit a word out of a piece of classic literature. If it offends you, it is supposed to offend you! If it makes you wince, that is the point of it! It's a period piece, and is using language of the times. Are we going to re-write all literature to match the language commonly acceptable today?

Seriously WTF ever happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me"?

I read a book about political correctness in the education system, and learned that kids are so "traumatized" by a red pen marking on their paper that the school board (or whomever) had to change the red pen to purple. My then-roommate was a 2nd grade teacher and confirmed it. Purple is the new red. Doesn't logic tell you that purple will also be replaced by something else eventually? Sometimes I feel like the only one who bothers to attempt to think ahead. So annoying. And what kind of loser kid is traumatized by the marking of a red pen? Aren't we supposed to be alerted to a mistake so that we correct it? Argggh.

Sorry, I went on a rant there. So unlike me. (sarcasm)

Remember when crippled became handicapped became handicap-able became differently challenged became disabled became person with disability? Lord have mercy, it's not a pleasant thing, and changing the word/phrase is obviously not going to make it pleasant!

Just like making errors on your math test is not going to become a ray of sunshine because you change the pen color to purple!

Just like changing the n-word to "slave" is not going to make the history of slavery disappear!
