TOWN OF STOCKTON, Wis. -- An investigation is under way after 200 dead cows were found in a field in the Town of Stockton.

Investigators with the Portage County sheriff's office said the owner of the cattle has been working with a local veterinarian and it's believed the animals died from the IBR/BVD virus. The virus can cause respiratory and reproductive problems.

WSAW reported samples from the dead cows have been sent to Madison for testing.

Authorities said there is no threat to humans or other animals.

Hmmm.

200 cows don't just die @ near the same time of a virus. Any symptoms would have been noticeable for days before death.

Chad, your in the cheese state, have you heard about this?

I am going to do some checking as I vaguely remember a neighbor losing like 20 or 30 head in a days time but it was related to artesian well water. I will check and get back here, can't remember what the problem was exactly. Yes a virus doesn't kill 200 at a time. We run cattle and it just doesn't happen that way.
Did some checking and the losses I spoke of above were due to sulphates in the water. My husband said large losses in cattle are usually due to sulphates or nitrates. We know of friends losing 40 head from nitrate poisoning in oat hay. Tried to call our vet to see what he heard about the Wisconsin deal. Will be interesting to find out.
IBR/BVD cause long slow deaths. Very similar to AIDS in humans.

Just found the update on the likely cause of the death of the cows. A mycotoxin from moldy sweet potatoes was the major factor.
Here is the link to the article if anyone is interested:
