Mountain House isn't critical. Still plenty of storable food on the shelves at Wal-Mart and every other grocer.

But the freeze dried has a much longer shelf life. Best to have both in my opinion.

Many people think that they need to spend thousands of dollars on a one year supply of freeze-dried foods in order to be properly stocked up. There are many people in the United States that don’t have the extra money that will allow them to spend major portions of their income on freeze-dried food items. While freeze-dried food items are great if you can afford them, there are several other ways you can build a year’s supply of food. Canned foods can be a great way to create a long term food storage program!

The Advantages

1.) Canned foods are generally less expensive and are already a major part of your food budget.

Special Note: Canned goods bought in bulk are approximately 25% of the cost of the same product offered in freeze-dried or dehydrated form.

2.) Canned foods will generally have more calories.

Special Note: Canned foods generally contain more calories in the form of fats than freeze-dried or dehydrated foods. Fat has more calories per ounce than most types of food.

3.) Many canned foods have additional water content. This will allow easier preparation. . The water content will vary depending on the type of canned food.

Special Note: Freeze-dried or dehydrated foods have little or no water content. This means you will need to store additional water to prepare your meals. This will be in addition to water needed for drinking and sanitation purposes.

4.) Canned foods have a very good shelf life of a year or more in most cases.

5.) Canned foods are readily available in a wide variety of types in most places.

6.) Canned foods are usually products that are familiar to your family and that they are already comfortable eating.

7.) The preparation of most canned foods is a familiar activity for most individuals and families.

8.) Many canned food items can be eaten without the need for additional cooking. If there is no power or heat available for cooking you will still be able to eat a satisfying meal.

9.) Many canned foods can be prepared or heated directly in the can. This makes the need for additional cooking gear minimal. This is great in an emergency situation.

10.) Canned foods are generally resistant to vermin (bugs, mice, rats, etc.).

The Disadvantages

1.) Canned foods take up more storage space. This is a very small sacrifice when compared with the money you will save.

2.) Canned foods are heavy. This is due mainly to their additional moisture content.

3.) Canned foods are more difficult to transport.

4.) They are susceptible to high moisture conditions and may rust and become unusable.

4.) You will need a good can opener! Most cans are difficult if not impossible to open without one. It would probably be a good idea to have several back-up can openers as well.

For persons or families on a budget, canned food items are an easy and simple way to build a long term food storage program.

Hey Dude?.........2.5 years of Mountain House alone and the other 5 years in can goods.........believe it or not, my main meals consist of rice, chile con carne, or vienna winnies........spaghetti with winnies and catshup......a meal is what you make it be and not what is supposed to be.

When ever I make nimute rice I throw in the frozen vegetable and by the time the rice is ready then so is the frozen vegetables.

Remember that can goods might loose its vitamins but you can suplement that with a pill from a bottle.

That's some really crappy sounding diet. Maybe you should get a cat to feed the winnies to? I would be happy to eat some chili and rice, and some spaghetti and SAUCE, but the vienna winnies, that's what you catch fish with, unless you are in the SHTF already. Try making some decent food, probably would be good for you.

Hey Ponce, let me urge you to do one thing....look on the back of the can of chile con carne at the nutrition label. Many of those cans are atrocious. One tiny can probably has 100% of your daily sodium and saturated fat.

I've never contemplated buying those vienna wieners so can't say how had they are.

Lots of canned foods have BPA in them, that's why I no longer eat them. Otherwise, great list. I need to find non-BPA cans.

I've eaten lots of wild game from squirrel to muskrat. I also eat a lot of wild plants, but I hate the idea of canned, dried, processed anything. I'd rather eat a freshly killed raccoon (yuck) than a can of spam any day. Looking at my preps, I'm not looking forward to SHTF cuisine, but it beats dying.

Learning to trap is key. Unlike hunting you don't have to sit in a freezing (or hot, bug infested) woods all day. Also the lack of gunshots doesn't draw the attention of others. I read a story about a German lady whose father trapped pets gone wild in the neighborhood to feed his family towards the end of the war. I will NOT kill another person to take their food to survive, but I'll feed my kids cat, burdock, and spam if needed.

[/quote]

i've been holding off myself.

what i learned about earthworms is, for me it's easier to swallow them whole. just wash them down with water, and don't chew.

however, earthworms can have tapeworm eggs, so earthworms need to be cooked.

as for maggots, they can be squirmy, so maybe it's better to boil them anyway.

but they are nutritious - full of protein & 3-6-9 omega oils. plus, no mercury - a definite plus. so you can eat the maggots without going mad-hatter. (or more mad-hatter, as the case may be ;D )

of course, Vitamin C is water soluble, so boiling the maggots will result in some loss of Vitamin C. might be better to steam them. :o

perhaps this would make a good plenary session at the next G-S.us conference. you first !

silver lining - zombies who break into your compound & find you eating earthworms & maggots may just decide to quietly retreat.

Man, if you've made it 70 years already on a diet that works for you, then here's to making it another 70, personally I try to buy low sodium cans but that's just my own opinion. Anyway, the survivalists' period is most likely quite a ways out still so watch the rotation and shelf life.

Well Funny........if the "C Rations" that I ate in the army didn't kill me (or the bugs at Ft Bragg, and Panama) then nothing will........plenty of food walks right into my property everyday and night....once in a while I put out my left over food back there and every night I see them (night vision glasses) walking around looking for something.

as for maggots, they can be squirmy, so maybe it's better to boil them anyway. The thing that worries me about maggots is they eat rotting flesh and have undigested toxins in their guts. So just as cooking wouldn't kill the toxins of putrid meat, I'd wonder if it would be the same for maggots.

Personally, that's why I like chickens. They love eating earthworms, maggots etc., and then the nice little bird give back a nutrituous tasty egg.

A chicken's gut is the best processor for most survival type foods, IMO.

I agree that canned food is not a good daily or maybe even weekly choice, but in an emergency situation, I'd say canned food is more than worthwhile.

You need your health in an emergency situation too. It's not like canned food is the only choice either. Rice is cheaper per calorie than canned food by far, and healthier too.

And what if there is no emergency? I'll be stuck with a bunch of canned shit I don't want. Whereas with rice and legumes I have no problems eating it.

Canned high quality protein is fine by me though, it's worth the risk. I have many cans of tuna and salmon.

There are things that wont go bad and if they do it will take a while.....like rice, blk beans and so on, I don't rotate the food and the stuff from frezeer number one is going next week into the woods to feed the animals, if they are so brave as to eat it.......and then I'll buy a fresh load.....most of it is of that dollar Banquet meals........about $270.00.

I posted a while back how I keep it fresh..........a 44 gallons greek barrels that was used for shipping oil sateside.....a 55 gallong bag inside, fill it with rice, hole at the top with a water valve, suck the air out with a vaccum cleaner, shut the water valve and .......voila, the food is in a vaccum......once every six months I release the air and do it again and that way I make sure that is working.

All my packages of Rits crackers wen bad on me and now I have to buy a new load, this time I'll make sure to eat them and rotate them......same for Vanilla Whaffers.

Tomorrow after the gun show I'll be going to the dollars store and buy about three more cases of my favorite Vienna winnies.........almost forgot.........12 cases of tuna in water in stock.

Also have about 15 25 lbs of dry cat food and 10 cases of 48 cans of wet food........but no cat.
