Splintering this off from another thread:
It's sad but true about GSUS: if you post a thread in the proper subforum, rather than GD, it magically sees many fewer eyeballs & doesn't spark discussion accordingly. I guess some users just hang out in the GD directory only. Does everyone know about the
Show unread posts since last visit. (http://gold-silver.us/forum/unread/)
Show new replies to your posts. (http://gold-silver.us/forum/unreadreplies/)
links at the top? Unread posts is your friend- it produces a cross-subforum listing of all the most recent posts... "new replies" shows all threads which you've posted a reply in, if they've been updated since you last opened them. Both those links are invaluable! I have both bookmarked with quicklinks near the top of my browser, so I can click them anytime without having to page up to the top of a given GSUS page to access them. Note: you must be logged in to use these links, otherwise they'll just direct you to the login page.
The GSUS subforums shouldn't be "dungeons", but in effect they are-- the views & subsequent replies numbers between posting the "same thing" in the proper subforum vs GD, tell the whole story.
Notice I posted this in GD, not in the proper subforum, coz this is aimed at the users who would never see it in a subforum other than GD!

Maybe we can make this thread a sticky OR reduce the number of seldom-read Sections at GSUS.
PatColo nailed it.

Show unread posts since last visit.
That and the search function are all I ever use here.
Although it may not be available for non-members.

I wouldn't reduce the sub forums. Anything gets lost in the area of gd in a matter of hours. 3 day old posts/threads will be on page 3 or further down the dust bin of history.
I admit, I don't use the search function for everything I post. I've been busted a few times on that.
I get annoyed when we get 3 or 4 posts on the same subject quoting word for word on an article.
Search function people. Search function.
Seems like a waste of brain energy to have a discussion of a subject on 3 threads versus searching for one that may already have been posted.
I give this thread till 3:00pm CST to make it to page 2 of gd. :D

PatColo is absolutely right. I understand it's complicated to separately open each sub-forum to check what's new, but folks, if you use the "show unread posts" option, you will see everything, not just what is posted in General Discussion, all in one easy to read page where you can then click on all the new threads/posts in the whole forum.
I share PatColo's frustration here, because many times if a mod moves a thread to the proper location it simply doesn't get the kind of attention that it did in General Discussion and then the author of the post is upset to be shortchanged. But all those sub-forums are there for a reason, if someone is looking for a certain piece of info (i.e. silver related or firearm related), it's nice to be able to open the proper sub-forum and see everything there. As it is now, there are silver & firearm threads in GD, and while they get immediate attention, they disappear after a few days and never surface again.
There is a lot more to this site than General Discussion, and it would be in the best interests of every member to take advantage of these options so you can follow along with the whole forum.

Even though I use those functions all the time, I still mostly stick to the GD board.

98% of the time I only come to GD........if a post is taken elsewhere I don't go there.......even if it was done to Ponce :'(

Show new unread since last visit doesn't actually show ALL the new posts made since your last login. How do I know? Well, I use that link as my primary method of browsing the site. However, if you happen to respond to a thread that is displayed in your new since last login results you will be dropped into the subforum the thread is actually living in once you submit your reply. Here, I always see a pile of new posts, since I last logged in, that were not in my new since last login results page. A cursory look over other subforums quickly discovers more NEW posts that are NOT in my new since last login results.
This effect is amplified the longer you go between logins.

It's not based on your "last login", it's based on whether the thread has been updated since you last opened it (while logged in- otherwise the BBS doesn't know who you are if opening threads while not logged in). Dropping you in a thread's subforum after you reply is meaningless, like I said in the OP, bookmark the 'unread' & 'new' links at the top, drag the bookmarks to the shortcut area of your browser below the URL field so that the bookmarks are always clickable (don't have to page to to the top of a GSUS page to access), and viola, you're always one click away from the 'unread' & 'new' pages.
If you want to add a shortcut-bookmark to the GD directory there too, be my guest. I've found no need for that, though I do have a 3rd GSUS shortcut up there to the subforum directory (http://gold-silver.us/forum) as sort of a central hub, which is useful if Im going to post a new thread and want to open the most appropriate subforum to post it in... something I'm increasingly unlikely to do, given that most GSUS user habits make the subforums into dungeons, where your thread rots with no views/replies.

I always use the "Show unread posts since last visit" feature. My only gripe with it is that if I visit in the AM during my commute via my mobile, when I log in on a computer all posts that were in my mobile "Show unread posts since last visit" window are now marked read. Only the new posts since I logged in via my mobile appear in the "Show unread posts since last visit" window.

It's always the first thing I click, so I usually have no idea what you guys are talking about when complaining about "sub" forums. Its all just one big happy forum to me ;D

Yep, same here, until you find all those posts you weren't aware of. I have the same issue with my mobile futzing the results, too. I would be glad to develop the wap interface. It has less features than it did before the server upgrade and that's BAAAAD. For one thing, you used to be able to thank posts in the old WAP.

I would like a thank you from PatColo!
haha honestly I am guilty of this as well, I spend 99% of my time here on GD, maybe going to conspiracies and survival once in a blue moon.
Not that I am advocating this, but what if GD went poof? Anything that anyone would post could fit into the other subforums be it news/ce, the lounge, economics etc.. It would also piss off Ponce, so everyone wins!

Every time I open my browser, the first place I go is "unread replies". After I've read all of those, I go to "unread posts". Always . . . well, ever since since I discovered these functions. They've been mentioned before in different threads, but thanks for making a thread about them, PatColo.
