Once you sign on that dotted line, you're considered government property. Getting out of that contract is almost impossible without really really screwing up.

Being former military myself the realization that you are stuck at the mercy of a government that doesn't give 2 shits about you leaves you feeling utterly hopeless.

I can only imagine the hopelessness these guys feel going on their 4-5th tour in a war zone. Feeling lucky that they made it this far and knowing statistically speaking the more times you go the less likely you're going to come back.
