Having lived in Middle and East TN and Central NC all my life I have felt very sheltered from most natural disasters. Tornadoes are seasonal and earthquakes are not unheard of but generally Nature is mostly only a danger when you venture off into it unprepared. Landslides historically are the biggest things to happen in my area but they are extremely rare and I've never been alive during a large one anywhere near me. Nashville and surrounding areas flooded hard last year but no landslides were reported.

You cannot prepare for the very Earth to lurch out from under you. Thoughts of landslides petrify me.

This family near Montreal found that to be true.
When they dug into the house, they found the family members all sitting on the couch, as if they were watching TV together. Instantly covered in earth. Scariest thought ever.

Pics at the link. Terrible shame.
