Some interesting pieces of info here ... Hadassah is a $1billion dollar plus organization, $318 million for just the new hospital alone. Big organization, I am sure it is all tax-free non-profit as well.

A former Lancaster resident has been nominated as the next national president of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America Inc.

Marcie Natan, a member of Temple Beth El in East Hempfield Township, will be elected officially as president by the delegates at the organization's annual meeting in Las Vegas in July.

Hadassah, founded in 1912, is the nation's largest women's, largest Jewish and largest Zionist organization. There are more than 300,000 women members of the organization.

Natan currently is chair of Hadassah College Jerusalem and has been based in Manhattan for the last nine years. She also served as national treasurer of Hadassah for the past four years, finishing her term last July.

"I am blessed to have this opportunity to express my Zionism in such a meaningful way," Natan said of her nomination to the role of national president. Her run for the highest-level volunteer leadership role of the organization began last summer when she filled out a form requesting the nomination.

"We change national presidents every four years," Natan said. "Individuals interested in running for the position are self-selected with a form to fill out."

This election cycle, Natan and another woman from Houston campaigned for the position that currently is held by Nancy Falchuk.

Natan said there are 140 members of the national board who act as the nominating committee for the officers, while a smaller committee selects other board members.

Natan received the nomination at the 2011 board midwinter meeting on Jan. 16 in Jersey City, New Jersey.

During her presidency, Natan said she "wants to be certain we can better align our fundraising ability to the amount of commitment we are making to these projects (that Hadassah supports). The change in the economy the last couple of years really brought this to the forefront. We can't count on millions of dollars in earned interest."

Hadassah owns two hospitals in Israel and its own college in Jerusalem.

It also supports Youth Aliyah — villages that serve underprivileged youths — and owns one of the youth villages.

Another program it runs is Judaea American Youth, helping to provide one-year Israel experiences for those who have graduated from high school.

It also is a contributor to the Jewish National Fund, the organization that plants trees in Israel.

During her presidency, Hadassah will be celebrating its centennial anniversary in October 2012 in Jerusalem.

"Preparing for that is a big piece of what I will do," she said.

Hadassah also is constructing a new hospital tower, the main building of its tertiary care hospital. The shell of the building is now up, with patients utilizing the facility.

"We're very excited about it," Natan said. "But now comes the hard part — setting up and furnishing operating rooms and getting the insides finished. We want it to be as close to fully operational as it can be when we go (to Israel in 2012 so it can be dedicated). It's a $318 million endeavor."

Therefore, Hadassah needs to increase its fundraising for the construction project, she said.

The final item on Natan's list of things to accomplish during her presidency is to "continue to attract and train upcoming leadership so the organization can continue to be strong and have a future for the next 100 years. I personally feel strongly about that."

In addition to serving on Hadassah's national board and executive committee, Natan is a former member of the Hadassah Foundation Board.

A member of Hadassah for more than 40 years, Natan also has served as national vice president, national secretary, chair of planned giving and estates, chair of major gifts, chair of unit assessment, national organization department chair and national president's training chair.

As national treasurer from 2006 to 2010, she led the initiative to create Hadassah's single consolidated budget, which has helped to streamline financial planning.

Natan was president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Region from 1989 to 1992.

A Lancaster resident from 1977 to 2002, Natan is a past president of Temple Beth El and has served on the boards of the Lancaster Jewish Community Center, the Lancaster Jewish Federation and the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El. She also has taught both Hebrew and Sunday school.

She was named Woman of the Year by the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El in 1990.

With an undergraduate degree in early childhood education from the University of Maryland, Natan was trained and formerly served as a divorce mediator for the Lancaster Mediation Center.

After her four-year term as national president of Hadassah is completed, Natan said she does not plan to run for the office again.

"It's important to look for new, younger women to continue this incredible tradition," she said.

Assuming these are all related, we are talking assets, just in the USA, of more than 1.5 BILLION . Add in the $400 million hospital and the other stuff in Israel, we are easily talking $3 Billion.

They put $40 million into Madoff and then took out $130 million over the years, for example.

And remember: this is just the "ladies' auxiliary" part of the Zionist base in America.
