Suspects in shooting of 15 year old girl present themselves to authorities

TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) – Three men charged with First Degree Murder say that being in jail is still better than what could have happened to them in Mexico.
"It was between me dying or me coming over here," Orel Vasquez said as he sat in the Santa Cruz County jail Sunday night.
Vasquez, his brother Christian Betza Vasquez, and their cousin Juan Carlos Leon all presented themselves to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales early Saturday morning. Tucson Police have warrants for the three on First Degree Murder for the death of 15 year-old Brenda Arenas on August 5th, 2009. Police said that the three were part of a group of at least six men who invaded a home in the 6100 block of South Southland Boulevard while dressed in dark clothes, carrying weapons, and demanding drugs and money. Police said that when the men left the house, they saw Arenas and her mother passing by in a car, fired a shot into the car, and fatally struck Arenas. Police said that the men were likely hiding in Mexico. All three are citizens of Mexico.
"I'm not saying that I did (kill Arenas), just that they wanted me. Between me getting shot in the head in Mexico or being in four walls, I would rather be in four walls," Vasquez said. He said that police in Mexico arrested him, his brother and his cousin. He said that they did not turn themselves in at the U.S. border, but rather avoided being turned over to drug cartels by the police in Mexico.
"The officer comes to me and tells me you got two options," Vasquez explained about his time in jail in Mexico. "We'll turn you over to these guys or you want to go to the other side?... First thing I said, ‘take me to the other side.'" So the Mexican police are complicit, and push THEIR problems to us.
Vasquez said that he did not kill Brenda Arenas, that he does not do home invasions, and that he has brought drugs into the country as a mule. He said that he was not there when she was shot.
"It's not what they say, it's what they can prove," he said. All three await transport to Pima County and Vasquez said that they are each being held on $1 million bond.
